Ancient Web: West Mansion Kept Splatterhouse Alive When the Series Was Basically Dead

West Mansion exists because somebody went looking for a good Splatterhouse website and discovered there basically wasn’t one. So in June 2001, Rob built it himself.

That decision turned into one of those fan projects that outlived entire eras of the Web. The site has moved hosts, survived the shutdown of IGN’s hosted-site network, spent roughly a decade archived, reopened in 2021 and was still being updated in 2026.

More Than a Game List

The obvious material is here: the original arcade game, the TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine versions, Splatterhouse 2 and 3, Wanpaku Graffiti, the 2010 reboot and other releases.

But the better reason to explore West Mansion is the material around the games.

There are character pages, screenshots, weapons, codes, music, interviews, artwork, fan fiction, emulation notes, trivia and sections devoted to fan-made games and ROM hacks. The site even maintains a “Graveyard” for fan projects that disappeared or died during development.

That graveyard is particularly good preservation work. Abandoned fan games normally vanish twice: first when development stops, then again when the old forum, host or download link disappears. West Mansion records names, creators and what survived. In some cases it preserves beta builds with permission.

A Fan Site Became the Historical Record

The site’s own history says it first appeared on GeoCities before moving to Classicgaming in 2001. When IGN’s hosted sites shut down in 2009, West Mansion relocated again. In 2011 it was archived due to burnout and personal circumstances, then officially reopened on Halloween 2021.

That hosting history is almost as interesting as the game history.

Fan sites were often the only places documenting obscure versions, regional differences, cancelled projects and community creations. When those sites disappeared, search engines did not magically preserve the knowledge somewhere else.

West Mansion survived long enough to become an archive of the culture that formed around Splatterhouse as well as the games themselves.

There is a lesson for modern webmasters in that. A small site does not need millions of visitors to become important. It needs a subject nobody else is documenting as thoroughly, enough stubbornness to survive host migrations, and files that remain understandable ten or twenty years later.

Ancient Web: Rodent’s Vengeance Kept Rodent’s Revenge Alive in Java

Some old Windows games survive because a company remasters them. Others survive because one person refuses to let a mouse be eaten by cats forever.

The original Rodent’s Revenge was developed by Christopher Lee Fraley for Microsoft and appeared in the 1993 Microsoft Game Pack for Windows. Its rules were simple enough to explain in a paragraph: move a rodent around a grid, push blocks, trap cats, and turn the trapped cats into cheese.

The problem was not the design. The problem was time.

According to the Rodent’s Vengeance site, the original game had effectively remained static for decades. Mike Reynolds, who had played it since the mid-1990s, rebuilt the idea in Java after completing a post-baccalaureate computer-science degree.

What began as an academic challenge turned into a preservation project with opinions.

The clone fixes the things nostalgia forgets

Rodent’s Vengeance adds features that old Windows software never had to anticipate: mouse control, alternate keyboard layouts, save-and-restore, adjustable board sizes, selectable color schemes and stronger cat pathfinding.

The site even documents the behavioral differences. The original cats mostly move directly toward the player and can be confused by obstacles. The Java version can give them a larger search area so they are less likely to behave like furry missiles with no concept of a corner.

The current download page offers Java .jar files for several visual variants and explains how to run them on Windows, macOS, Linux and other systems with a compatible Java runtime. Beta Release 2.77, dated December 15, 2023, added mouse control and a one-click scamper mode.

That makes this more interesting than a fan remake hidden in a repository.

The website explains what the old game did, what broke as computing changed, and exactly what the replacement changes. It preserves the gameplay logic and the reasoning around the preservation.

That is useful game history.

Ancient Web: Mystery Manor Still Keeps Old Adventure Games Running

Mystery Manor has been online since 2002 and still organizes PC adventure-game support as rooms in a haunted house.

The site is gloriously committed to the bit.

Walkthroughs live on the Grounds. Screenshots are in the Winecellar. Manuals are in the Chapel. Saved games are stored in the Attic. Patches go in the Sewing Room. Compatibility utilities are kept in the Carriage House. Easter eggs are in the Guest Room.

It would be easy to dismiss that as decorative navigation until you notice how much practical material is underneath it.

Mystery Manor maintains walkthroughs in multiple languages, downloadable saves, game patches, screenshots, developer interviews, reviews, manuals, trivia, music and a forum whose earliest accounts date back to 2002.

The site explicitly says it still looks old because the owners like it that way.

Excellent.

The patch database is accidental preservation infrastructure

The Sewing Room is a good example of why this kind of fan site matters.

Old adventure games often fail in ways that have nothing to do with the puzzle the player is trying to solve. CPUs become too fast. Windows compatibility changes. Old installers break. Graphics modes disappear. Sound systems behave differently.

Mystery Manor preserves patches for games such as Gabriel Knight, Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon, Clue Chronicles, CSI and many others. The descriptions record exactly what those patches fixed: lockups, save-game problems, missing animations, timing errors, Vista stability problems and incompatibilities between old and new save formats.

The Carriage House extends the same idea into utilities and workarounds for DOS environments, sound emulation and machines that run old software too quickly.

Saved games solve a different preservation problem. If a player is stuck because a modern system crashes at one point—or simply because a puzzle is miserable—the site can sometimes provide a save beyond the failure.

That is not museum preservation in the formal sense.

It is operational preservation.

The software is still expected to run.

Mystery Manor also continues to add material for modern adventure games, so the site is not merely frozen in 2002. Recent walkthroughs sit beside resources for Myst, old Sierra titles and other games from much earlier PC eras.

A redesign could probably make it cleaner.

It would also destroy the central joke: you are supposed to wander around the house.

Some information architecture deserves to haunt the Web forever.

Ancient Web: Digger.org Remastered a 1983 CGA Game Before Retro Remakes Were Normal

Digger was released in 1983 on a copy-protected 5.25-inch floppy for the IBM PC. By the late 1990s, the hardware assumptions that made the game work had become part of the problem.

Andrew Jenner created Digger Remastered in 1998 to make the Windmill Software game usable on newer PCs while preserving its original feel.

The obstacles were wonderfully specific.

The original expected genuine CGA graphics and the timing of a roughly 4.77 MHz PC. Ripped copies could run too fast. Video output could break on later graphics hardware. The game also expected to save scores back to drive A, which is the kind of behavior that makes perfect sense on the original machine and becomes increasingly funny as decades pass.

Jenner’s remaster added practical features without turning the game into something else: VGA output, speed control, keyboard remapping, recording and playback, gauntlet mode and simultaneous two-player play.

The website preserved more than an executable

Digger.org became a substantial technical and fan archive.

Its documentation covered command-line options, original instructions, the history of Windmill Software, ports to other platforms, extra level sets, a level editor, screenshots, source-related material and fan recordings. The site also maintained a Hall of Fame in which players could submit recorded games rather than merely type an unverifiable high score into a form.

That recording feature was preservation-minded before most people used the word that way. A recorded game captures player technique, timing and routes through levels—things a screenshot cannot show.

The archive also documented other Windmill titles such as Styx, Moonbugs, Conquest, Rollo and the Brush Brothers, The Exterminator and Floppy Frenzy.

Modern descendants continue to build on the work. Later SDL versions brought the game to Linux, FreeBSD and Windows, and WebAssembly versions can run directly in a browser.

Digger.org is exactly why CacheRat’s Ancient Web research project treats old hobby sites as research sources rather than decoration. The remaster mattered, but the surrounding notes explain what had to be fixed and why.

Preservation is much easier when the person doing the preservation writes things down.

Ancient Web: The Stars! FAQ Kept a 1990s Strategy Game Installable

Old strategy games do not become unusable all at once. First the publisher disappears, then the patch links rot, then the help files become difficult to find, and eventually somebody on a forum is asking whether version 2.7f still exists anywhere.

Stars! was a Windows-era turn-based space strategy game built around exploration, colonization, research, ship design and long multiplayer campaigns. Its community produced the usual layer of knowledge that complicated strategy games attract: race design advice, tactical arguments, patch notes, utilities and increasingly obscure installation instructions.

The Stars! FAQ became one of the places where that knowledge accumulated.

A FAQ can outlive the software company

The site did more than answer gameplay questions. It also acted as a practical survival kit.

Old references to the FAQ point to downloadable shareware versions, manuals and update files for releases such as 2.6 and 2.7. File archives elsewhere on the Web still identify patches such as the 2.7c-to-2.7f update as originating from StarsFAQ.com.

That matters because the difference between “this game existed” and “this game can still be investigated” is often a pile of small files nobody thought were important at the time.

The surrounding Usenet history is equally revealing. Messages in rec.games.computer.stars routinely included the Stars! FAQ in signatures and pointed newcomers toward it. Discussions covered strategy, bugs, multiplayer expectations and the long-running hopes for successor projects.

A modern game usually centralizes this material inside publisher support pages, storefront communities, Discord servers and wikis. When one of those disappears, large chunks can vanish together.

The old FAQ model was less elegant but oddly durable. A static page could be mirrored. A patch ZIP could be copied. Somebody could save the whole thing to a CD-R and forget about it for fifteen years.

That is why these pages keep appearing in CacheRat’s Ancient Web research corpus. The useful artifact is often not the homepage design. It is the maintenance layer around obsolete software: the exact version numbers, filenames, community vocabulary and instructions that make later preservation possible.

The game is old enough to need archaeology.

Fortunately, somebody wrote the FAQ.

Ancient Web: Sopwith.org Helped Keep a 1984 DOS Biplane Game Alive

A four-color DOS game about tiny biplanes should have disappeared with the machines it was written for. Instead, Sopwith acquired the kind of fan preservation effort that old software often needs if it is going to survive its original hardware.

Sopwith was created by David L. Clark at BMB Compuscience in the mid-1980s. The game was originally tied to BMB’s Imaginet networking system, but its single-player mode escaped the fate of the network hardware and circulated far more widely.

The game itself is simple enough to describe and difficult enough to keep playing: fly a cyan or magenta biplane across a side-scrolling battlefield, bomb buildings, shoot enemy aircraft and avoid becoming another collection of CGA-colored debris.

Sopwith.org became one of the places where the details accumulated.

The fan site preserved the weird little facts

Old games are often remembered vaguely. Fan sites are useful because they preserve the parts that manuals, screenshots and nostalgia usually leave out.

Sopwith.org documented command-line options, level behavior, keyboard controls, hidden features, old forum discussions and the game’s strange technical baggage. Sopwith 1 could be run in a high-resolution two-color mode. Sopwith 2 included options for sound, control latency, starting levels and recording game histories. The original multiplayer mode depended on BMB networking software that almost nobody still had.

The site also intersected with a much more important preservation event: rediscovery of the original author.

In 2000, fans tracked down David Clark and contacted him about the game and its source code. Clark explained that he had written Sopwith while employed by BMB and did not personally own the program, although he had permission to retain and modify a copy. That legal ambiguity is exactly the sort of thing that can strand old software between “widely available” and “nobody knows who can authorize anything.”

The source eventually became available, and modern ports followed. SDL Sopwith preserved the CGA look while making the game usable on newer systems.

That is the larger value of a site like this. It did not merely say, “remember this game?” It connected players, source code, technical notes, original creators and later ports.

A tiny biplane game survived because people cared enough to reverse-engineer it, ask questions and keep notes.

Ancient Web: NextDimension Kept Gunman Chronicles Running After WON

A lot of old PC games did not stop working because the executable vanished. They stopped working because the world around the executable changed.

NextDimension is tied to one of those cases: Gunman Chronicles, the 2000 standalone game built on Valve’s GoldSrc technology. Years later, the game’s original WON-era assumptions had become a compatibility problem.

A patch credited to NextDimension was released to make the retail game work properly as a Half-Life mod under Steam. The patch documentation is wonderfully direct about the reason: the original standalone incarnation had accumulated compatibility problems on modern systems.

That is game preservation in its least glamorous and most useful form.

Compatibility work is historical work

The patch was not a remake. It did not need to improve the game.

It needed to bridge two generations of infrastructure.

That distinction matters. Old PC software often depends on launchers, network services, APIs, directory structures, middleware, drivers, and assumptions that age much faster than the game’s artwork or level data. When one layer disappears, a perfectly intact game can become effectively inaccessible.

Fan sites frequently became the place where those transitions were documented.

NextDimension also circulated material connected to Half-Life and related GoldSrc-era games, enough that its images and captures later surfaced in fan-wiki discussions. That makes the site part archive, part workshop: the sort of place where game archaeology happened before anyone called it game archaeology.

The Steam patch itself later spread to mirrors such as ModDB, which is another familiar preservation pattern. A personal or specialist site creates the fix; larger archives eventually inherit copies; years later, the mirror may be easier to find than the original page that produced it.

That is why the source site still matters.

It tells us where the work came from.

CacheRat’s 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list keeps turning up these maintenance sites because software history is full of people quietly extending the life of programs after the publisher moved on.

Sometimes preservation means saving the file.

Sometimes it means making the file run again.
