Ancient Web: ASCII Cats Needs No Business Plan

There are websites that require an About page, a mission statement, documentation, onboarding, and twenty minutes of explanation before you understand why they exist. CatsAreGud opens with the essential premise: ASCII cats. Many of them. End of strategic plan.

The page survives in Wiby’s small-Web index under the title “ASCII Cats!” with an enthusiastic introduction followed immediately by cats assembled from slashes, parentheses, carets, underscores, punctuation, and whatever other keyboard debris can plausibly become ears.

That is basically the site.

And that is why it belongs here.

ASCII art predates the Web by a long way. People were making pictures from printable characters on terminals, bulletin-board systems, Usenet, email signatures, text files, and printers because text was what the machine reliably knew how to move around. Cats were inevitable. Civilization was always heading here.

What pages like CatsAreGud demonstrate is how naturally that older text culture spilled onto personal websites. HTML could display images, but that did not make text art obsolete. ASCII remained tiny, copyable, editable, searchable, and understandable by almost anything capable of rendering monospace text.

Nothing is being monetized here

The modern Web trains us to look for the purpose behind a page.

What is the conversion goal? Where is the funnel? Who is the target demographic? Why is there no account creation? How will ASCII Cat Operations scale in Q4?

There is no reason to ask any of this.

Somebody liked ASCII cats enough to make a page of ASCII cats.

That kind of low-stakes publishing was one of the Web’s strengths. The cost of making a page could be so low that an idea did not have to justify itself economically. A person could publish a joke, a list, a drawing, a shrine to one television character, thirty MIDI files, or cats made out of punctuation simply because putting it online amused them.

Small search engines such as Wiby remain useful partly because they still surface pages like this. Mainstream search tends to prioritize large, well-linked, frequently updated, commercially legible sites. A tiny static page about ASCII cats has very little reason to satisfy those signals. It only has to satisfy the far older requirement of making one visitor say, “hell yeah, ASCII cats.”

There is preservation value here too. A page this small captures a style of Internet participation that is easy to lose precisely because nobody considered it important. Historians naturally save major platforms and technical milestones. The ordinary weirdness between those milestones is harder to collect.

Ancient Web: A FreeServers Southeast Asia Directory Kept Escaping Into School PDFs

Some websites become historically interesting because they were famous. Others become interesting because one useful image escapes the site and spends the next twenty years wandering through classrooms, reports, blogs, and copied documents.

The material at hwebb.freeservers.com was part of an old South-East Asia Directory, a hand-built collection of regional links, maps, photographs, and slideshow resources. The original slideshow directory is unreliable today, but individual files from it left a surprisingly durable citation trail.

One of the clearest examples is south_east_asia.gif, a labeled regional map. Copies and references to that image appear in educational material teaching Southeast Asian geography and art. Teacher guides and classroom handouts have used the file as a basic identification map for countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines.

Another page from the same slideshow area, dealing with views of Southeast Asia and the South China Sea, has been cited in later writing and institutional material.

The site did not need an API.

It had a GIF.

Apparently that was enough.

Useful files can outlive their navigation

This is one of the less glamorous ways old websites survive.

A homepage disappears from search results. The server becomes flaky. Navigation breaks. But an image filename was copied into a lesson plan in 2011, a PDF in 2017, a blog post in 2014, or somebody’s bookmark collection. Those references become breadcrumbs back to the original site.

The result is a strange reversal. In 2026, the secondary documents can sometimes be easier to find than the page that created the material.

That matters to web researchers because old sites often need to be reconstructed from exactly this kind of evidence. A dead directory may still reveal itself through filenames, hotlinks, citations, alt text, mirrored images, and documents that treated the site as an ordinary source when it was still alive.

The FreeServers address is also part of the story. Services like FreeServers gave ordinary people space to publish topical directories and collections without running infrastructure. The resulting sites frequently looked more like notebooks than polished publications: directories inside directories, image files linked directly, pages added whenever the author found something useful.

That architecture could be messy, but it made individual resources extremely portable. A direct URL to a .gif could circulate completely independently of the homepage.

For modern webmasters, there is a small lesson here. Stable filenames and ordinary URLs have preservation value. A useful image that lives at a predictable address can acquire a life far beyond the page where it started.

Ancient Web: Native Languages Preserved Original Tribal Names Beyond English Labels

A familiar tribal name is not always the name a people historically used for themselves. Native Languages of the Americas built a simple reference page around that distinction, and the page has proved useful enough to keep turning up in academic and legal citations years later.

The purpose is straightforward: compare commonly used English-language names for Native North American peoples with Indigenous self-names, alternate forms, and meanings. Some familiar names are exonyms—labels applied by outsiders—while others are altered spellings or colonial renderings. The page tries to preserve the distinction instead of flattening everything into one standardized English term.

That sounds simple until you start using the material. Names can reflect language, geography, political organization, or identity. A people may have one name for themselves and another historically used by neighbors, colonists, missionaries, mapmakers, or government agencies. Some names were recorded through French or English spelling conventions that changed the sound again.

The page has been cited well beyond hobbyist genealogy. Academic work on intercultural communication has referenced it. A Harvard Law Review article discussing Indigenous identity and place names cited the resource when explaining how names can encode relationships to landscapes. Other educational and historical projects use the page as a starting point for comparing Indigenous names with English and French exonyms.

That does not make the page the final authority on every nation or spelling. Indigenous naming is a field where community preference matters, terminology changes, and local or tribal sources should take priority where available. The site’s value is as an accessible index that points readers toward distinctions they might otherwise miss entirely.

It is also a good example of how modest reference pages can become infrastructure. There is no elaborate interface. The usefulness comes from collecting scattered terminology in one place and giving each entry enough context to make further research possible.

For webmasters, this is a strong old-Web lesson: a page can remain useful for decades if it answers a precise question clearly enough that researchers continue linking to it.

Ancient Web: Mercury Arc Rectifiers Glowed Before Silicon Took Over

Before a few slabs of semiconductor could quietly convert serious electrical power, engineers sometimes did the job with glass vessels full of mercury vapor glowing an alarming shade of blue.

Mike’s Electric Stuff documents mercury arc rectifiers, or MARs, with the enthusiasm of somebody who correctly realizes that obsolete industrial hardware is much more interesting when you can actually see how strange it was.

These devices converted alternating current to direct current at power levels ranging from kilowatts into the megawatt range. Their operation depended on an electrical arc between a mercury pool and metal anodes, with multiple anodes commonly used for multiphase power.

The site explains both the principle and the hardware: glass bulbs, large steel tanks, ignitors, transformers, cooling systems, and the eerie arc itself.

It also preserves the kind of practical detail that rarely survives in a clean textbook diagram.

One retired engineer described how large glass rectifiers were shipped upside down. The mercury had to be carefully moved into the base during installation without allowing its weight to enter and break one of the glass arms. Apparently “quart of mercury escaping from shattered industrial glassware” was a problem best assigned to the experienced crew.

Industrial electronics with visible drama

The photographs are the heart of the page.

There are small rectifier bulbs, museum examples, huge multi-anode units, steel-tank rectifiers, control gear, circuit diagrams, and installations that remained in service long after semiconductor rectifiers had made the technology obsolete.

The page records examples still operating in the early 2000s, including equipment used for lifts, mills, tram power, and battery systems. One restored system had reportedly worked for more than fifty years before retirement.

That longevity makes the transition to solid-state electronics easier to appreciate. Semiconductor rectifiers are smaller, safer, simpler, and dramatically less theatrical.

A silicon diode does not contain a visible pool of mercury with an electric arc leaping through vapor above it.

Progress has costs.

The site also links scanned technical articles and maintenance manuals, turning a collector page into a small practical archive of a technology that most electrical workers will never encounter alive.

Ancient Web: Cataroo Became an Animation History Reference

Some specialist websites age into references without anybody formally declaring them archives. John Cawley’s Cataroo is one of those sites.

The root site is not especially reliable in 2026, but its individual pages have been cited for years in writing about animation history. Cawley’s material includes pages on Don Bluth films, studio history, interviews, production background, and classic television animation such as Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Those pages keep surfacing in bibliographies, student work, fan research, and reference compilations.

A Don Bluth biography on Cataroo, for example, has been cited in writing about An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Bluth’s departure from Disney. Another Cataroo page on Rocky and Bullwinkle has been used as a source for production history of the Jay Ward series and the limited-animation techniques around it.

The important part is not that every sentence on an old fan or specialist site should automatically be treated as authoritative. It should not.

The important part is that Cataroo preserves a layer of animation research that later writers repeatedly found useful enough to consult.

Specialist memory beats generic summary

General entertainment databases are good at credits, dates, runtimes, and cast lists. They are much worse at preserving the connective tissue: production anecdotes, interviews, studio transitions, creative decisions, and the kind of context gathered by somebody who has spent years following one subject.

That is where sites like Cataroo matter.

The Web once had thousands of these semi-professional reference projects. They sat somewhere between personal homepage, magazine archive, fan scholarship, and research notebook. Their authority came from specificity and persistence rather than institutional branding.

They also became fragile. A single domain failure can make decades of citations point nowhere.

That is why the surviving citation trail matters. Even when the homepage is unreliable, later pages and references show how widely the material circulated and what kinds of questions people used it to answer.

For Internet archaeology, this is often enough to justify documenting a site before more of it disappears.

Ancient Web: JWZ’s Tent of Doom Fought the Open Office With Camouflage Netting

The early Web did not merely document software. It also documented what programmers did after spending too many hours inside the offices where that software was being written.

Jamie Zawinski’s Tent of Doom is one of those tiny Web artifacts that survives because the story is too specific to disappear cleanly.

During the Netscape era in the mid-1990s, Zawinski transformed his cubicle by surrounding it with camouflage netting. Contemporary and later references describe the result as an improvised enclosure inside the office: part privacy screen, part joke, part protest against the visual and acoustic openness of cubicle life.

The page was already circulating as a curiosity while the commercial Web was still young. Old bookmark lists included it alongside other strange destinations people passed around before social feeds made “viral” a normal noun.

Years later, Slashdot commenters still invoked the Tent of Doom whenever somebody built an unusually elaborate cubicle modification. The page had escaped its original workplace and become part of programmer folklore.

A homepage-sized monument to office resistance

The appeal is easy to understand.

Open offices and cubicles are designed around organizational efficiency. Workers experience them from the inside as light, noise, interruptions, lack of privacy, and the vague knowledge that anyone walking past can see what is on the monitor.

Zawinski’s answer was not a productivity framework.

It was camouflage netting.

That is exactly the kind of thing old personal pages preserve well. A company history of Netscape will discuss browsers, IPOs, Microsoft, Mozilla, and the browser wars. Those things matter.

But they will not necessarily tell you what one programmer physically did to his desk because the office itself was irritating him.

The Web page does.

It also captures something about early technical culture: programmers documented jokes, office hacks, grudges, experiments, and personal fixes with the same instinct they used to document code. If it happened and somebody had disk space, it could become a page.

Ancient Web: The Malt-Whisky Experts Consortium Built a Fake-Secret Clubhouse

Some personal websites introduced themselves with a biography. MXC.ch preferred to inform visitors that they lacked authorization to view the strictly confidential material of the Malt-Whisky Experts Consortium.

The site presents itself with mock-official seriousness: a London location, contact numbers, an “authorised staff only” warning, restricted administration areas, and the sort of language that suggests somebody is about to slide a classified folder across a desk.

Then the footer ruins the operation beautifully by crediting the site to the “slightly insane but harmless&friendly boyz from the hood at hoengg.” So much for operational security.

The surviving homepage dates its copyright to 2004–2007. Its news section advertises free SMS tools in July 2007 and, in December 2005, excitedly notes that MI6—or SIS—now has its own website. The site also includes an about section, guestbook, mail contact, consortium information, privacy and terms pages, and a restricted admin area.

This should not be mistaken for an actual intelligence-service affiliation. The Vauxhall Cross and secrecy styling are part of the joke.

When a website was allowed to be a clubhouse

MXC belongs to a class of pages that is easy to underestimate because there is no grand product hiding underneath it.

It is basically a themed online clubhouse.

The creators took an interest—in this case malt whisky—wrapped it in spy-agency theater, added utilities and guestbook machinery, and gave the whole thing an internal mythology. The site’s personality comes from unnecessary details. Nobody needed to pretend a hobby page was classified. That is exactly why doing it was fun.

Personal websites frequently worked this way before social profiles standardized identity into the same avatar, bio, post stream, and follower count for everyone. A domain could become a fake corporation, secret organization, space station, medieval guild, underground laboratory, or whatever else its owner felt like building that weekend.

Technically, MXC is also an artifact of its time. Free SMS forms were once attractive enough to advertise as site news. Guestbooks were meaningful social infrastructure. A private admin section was worth mentioning because the public-facing website was itself a little software project rather than a profile hosted inside somebody else’s platform.

The whisky subject is almost secondary to the format. CacheRat is documenting the website, not recommending alcohol or turning this into a buying guide. What matters is the strange little institution its creators built around their interest.

Ancient Web: NukaFurbs Built a Furby World With Music, Shrines, and a Warning Label

NukaFurbs opens with a warning that the site is not recommended on mobile and may contain flickering imagery. Then it invites you into Furby World.

Inside is the kind of personal website that makes the modern phrase “content vertical” feel deeply embarrassing.

The site includes Furby images and collections, artwork, photography, blog posts, sewing, digital scrapbooks, music, movie reviews, clothing projects, computer-desk pages, and shrines for games such as Doom, Fallout, and The Sims. One page can play Kool & the Gang’s “Fresh.” The update log reads like a workshop notebook rather than a publication calendar.

That log is enormous.

Entries run through 2021, 2022, 2023, and into 2025. New pages appear because the author felt like adding them: a sewing section, a closet page, game shrines, music, a scrapbook, movie reviews, more photos, another site theme. In October 2025, after a gap, the homepage simply announces: “We are back in business, baby!”

That is a better relaunch statement than most press releases.

A personal homepage can contain the whole person

NukaFurbs is nominally a Furby site, but reducing it to that misses the point.

The Furby collection is the anchor. Around it grows everything else the webmaster enjoys. This is how personal sites often worked before profiles were separated into specialized services for photos, writing, music, collections, video, and social interaction.

You did not need one account for photography, another for movie reviews, another for your toy collection, and another for whatever strange game you were obsessed with that week. You had a homepage. You added another directory.

The design reinforces that sense of ownership. It is decorative, noisy, specific, and visibly maintained by one person. There are warnings, autoplay controls, themed pages, gifs, buttons, and an update history that shows the site changing because somebody was actively messing with it.

The result feels more alive than many technically modern sites because there is no confusion about who the page belongs to.

There is also a preservation angle. Collections like this document objects through photographs, personal notes, repair or sewing projects, and ordinary ownership. Formal museums may preserve representative examples. Hobbyists often preserve the weird variants, damaged examples, packaging, accessories, and stories that collectors actually care about.

Ancient Web: Rare Digital Watches Built a Museum of Calculator and Data-Bank Wrist Tech

There was a period when putting a calculator, game, phone book, sensor, or tiny database on your wrist felt like the future. RareDigitalWatches.com has spent years cataloging that future after it became vintage.

The site is an enormous visual index of 1970s and 1980s digital watches, especially Casio, Seiko, and Citizen models. It organizes watches by number ranges, manufacturer, technology, and subcategory, with separate sections for calculator watches, data-bank watches, game watches, analog/digital hybrids, Seiko calibers, manuals, battery information, advertisements, catalogs, and related material.

The navigation is wonderfully excessive. Casio alone sprawls across pages for Casiotron models, Data Bank watches, game watches, ladies’ LCD watches, G-Shocks, old model lists, manuals, advertisements, and a scanned 1984 color catalog. Seiko gets model pages, caliber references, and service-manual sections. Citizen LCD watches have their own sequence.

That structure makes the site useful in a way a generic image search is not. Somebody holding an unfamiliar old watch often starts with a model number, case shape, module number, display layout, or half-legible marking. The site lets a collector browse visually across families until something matches.

It also preserves the weird transitional period when consumer electronics companies were experimenting with what a wristwatch could be. Long before today’s smartwatches, manufacturers were already trying schedules, calculators, phone books, games, alarms, sensors, and data storage. Some ideas survived. Others became glorious dead ends.

For retrocomputing researchers, those devices matter because they compress the ambitions of early personal electronics into something smaller than a paperback. Their interfaces had to work with tiny LCDs, microscopic buttons, limited memory, and batteries expected to last far longer than a modern touchscreen device.

RareDigitalWatches.com has been online since at least 2008 according to its copyright notice, and its layout itself now feels appropriately period-correct: dense pages, image grids, numbered navigation, and very little concern for modern minimalist design.

Ancient Web: The UUCP Project Mapped a Network Before the Internet Looked Like One

Before Internet routing became invisible infrastructure, one very practical problem was simply figuring out how to get from one Unix machine to another through a chain of dial-up connections.

The Stargate Internet Museum’s page explains the problem neatly. Steve Bellovin had written pathalias, a program that could create routing information if it had a map of the network.

The problem was that no complete map existed.

UUCP networks were built from relationships between individual systems. One machine knew the machines it called directly. Those machines knew others. Mail and files could move hop by hop, but finding a good route across the larger network required knowledge that no single operator automatically possessed.

In January 1984, a birds-of-a-feather session at the USENIX conference in Washington, D.C. recruited more than thirty volunteers to build and maintain a map.

The resulting effort became known as the UUCP Project.

The network had human maintainers

The project divided responsibility among regional volunteers who supplied and maintained connectivity information. The maps were distributed through Usenet, eventually in the comp.mail.maps newsgroup, where other systems could collect them and generate routes.

Initial funding came from USENIX. When that funding ended, the work continued on a volunteer basis.

The museum page names Mark Horton as the person who ran the project, with major contributions from Mel Pleasant, Tim Thompson, Berry Kercheval, Steve Morenberg, Karen Summers-Horton, and a much larger collection of regional coordinators.

That structure is worth remembering because modern networking makes topology feel automatic.

In the UUCP world, the network map was partly a social artifact. Humans knew which systems existed, which links worked, who was responsible for which region, and how changes should be published so everyone else could calculate a path.

It was infrastructure maintained through cooperation and text files.

The Stargate Museum continues from this page into surviving 1984 map entries, which makes the exhibit more than a summary. It points directly at the kind of data that made the system work.
