Ancient Web: PcFreaK Preserves a Small Hacker Crew’s Old-School Manifesto

There was a period when a technical crew could announce itself to the Internet with a dark logo, a disclaimer, a handful of goals, and absolutely no interest in looking employable on LinkedIn. PcFreaK A/H/P/F Organization still has that energy.

The page identifies a small technical crew interested in network-security research, security exploration, open-source software, and helping people migrate away from proprietary Microsoft systems. It also carries the wonderfully blunt old-Web warning that anything found there comes with absolutely no warranty and is used at your own risk.

This is not unusual language for its era.

Early security culture on the public Web lived somewhere between hobby computing, Unix administration, hacker zines, exploit research, ideological arguments about software freedom, and teenagers discovering that networks were much more interesting when poked with a stick.

PcFreaK’s tiny manifesto preserves that mixture unusually well.

The crew page outlived the crew-page era

The larger pc-freak.net domain eventually accumulated a substantial Linux and system-administration blog covering networking, Debian, servers, monitoring, firewalls, open-source tools, and practical troubleshooting. The tone changed from crew manifesto to long-form technical notebook, but the older organization page remained online.

That continuity is the interesting part.

A modern security organization usually presents itself through a company site, a GitHub organization, conference talks, or social profiles. PcFreaK’s page comes from the older model: establish a name, publish the group’s interests, put useful material on the server, and let reputation emerge from what the members actually do.

The page’s goals are also a snapshot of software politics from a period when “moving away from Microsoft” was a much more explicit identity marker for Linux users. Open-source adoption was not yet the invisible infrastructure underneath half the commercial Internet. It was something people argued for.

There is one phrase on the page that should be read in its historical context: the crew lists network intrusion for security-exploration purposes among its interests. That is a description of the site’s stated goals, not an endorsement or instruction. The preservation value is cultural—showing how independent security groups described themselves before today’s professionalized cybersecurity industry absorbed much of the vocabulary.

Ancient Web: Kenny Young Left Behind a 1990s UFO Investigation Archive

Whatever you think UFOs are, Kenny Young’s old website is a remarkable artifact of how independent investigators used the early Web: witness reports, police tapes, government records, arguments, corrections, rumors, and local newspaper leads all piled into one sprawling research desk.

Young was a Cincinnati-area UFO researcher, television producer, writer, and investigator who began working cases in the 1990s. His site covers Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana sightings alongside older stories such as the 1949 Norwood searchlight case, the 1994 Trumbull County police incident, claims surrounding the Fernald Department of Energy site, and numerous reports that arrived through a regional UFO hotline.

The archive is interesting because it does not read like a polished paranormal brand.

It reads like work in progress.

Claims, counterclaims, and actual paperwork

Young interviewed witnesses, collected 911 recordings, petitioned government agencies for documents, and followed local reports into police departments, military explanations, newspapers, and public records. Some cases remained unexplained to him. Others were attributed to flares, aircraft, astronomical objects, or bad information.

The site also preserves criticism of Young’s conclusions.

One surviving page on the Trumbull County case reproduces a skeptical argument that some reported objects may have been stars or planets and directly challenges how television programs represented the incident. Young’s response is included too. That kind of disagreement is useful historical material because readers can see the argument rather than receiving a cleaned-up final verdict.

Young died of leukemia on January 31, 2005. The archive’s front page says his final update was October 14, 2004, while later caretakers kept the site online and made some repairs.

His physical research materials followed a different preservation path. Accounts from colleagues say portions of his files eventually went to institutions including the Ohio Historical Society and the Archives for UFO Research in Sweden. The website became the public-facing portion of that larger paper trail.

This is exactly why old personal research sites deserve preservation even when their subject is controversial. The value is not that every claim should be believed. The value is that the evidence, methods, mistakes, rebuttals, local reporting, and original context remain visible.

Ancient Web: RAMA3D Built a Personal Science-Fiction CGI Gallery for Arthur C. Clarke Fans

Before every aspiring 3D artist had a portfolio platform, people built their own galleries, hand-linked every image, joined web rings, and hoped somebody wandering through the science-fiction end of the Internet would find them. RAMA3D is still doing exactly that.

The site belongs to Norwegian computer consultant Espen Paulsen and describes itself plainly as a science-fiction 3D art site dedicated to Arthur C. Clarke. Its galleries are full of invented worlds, spacecraft, colonies, alien landscapes, planetary scenes, and images with titles like Inside RAMA, Artificial MantaRay, The Collector, Pathfinders, and Uranium Cargos.

Paulsen also invited visitors to submit their own science-fiction images for a guest gallery.

That makes RAMA3D more than one person’s portfolio. It is a surviving example of the old Web’s tiny, hand-curated art communities.

Bryce, Animation Master, Photoshop, repeat

Paulsen’s about page preserves the kind of technical detail that becomes useful with age. He lists Bryce for landscapes and environments, Animation Master 2000 for modeling, and Photoshop for final work.

Those tool names immediately date the workflow.

Today a science-fiction artist can publish a render to several giant platforms in seconds. RAMA3D came from a different culture: render the image locally, build an HTML page for it, write a caption, upload the files, trade links with other artists, and join subject-specific web rings.

The site even preserves a page for the Cool Science Fiction Webring, a reminder of how discovery worked before feeds became the front door to everything. A ring let independent websites point visitors toward one another without requiring a central social network.

Paulsen’s personal interests page is equally period-specific. Alongside science fiction, astronomy, electronics, golf, food, and skiing, he lists his professional specialties as Windows 2000, 2003, and XP deployment and migration. The portfolio and the biography were never separated into different brands. It was just his website.

That informality is part of the value.

RAMA3D preserves not only images but the surrounding culture of amateur CGI: the software, the fandom, the personal introductions, the external links, and the assumption that somebody somewhere would enjoy clicking through a homemade gallery of impossible planets.

Ancient Web: Oleg Bartunov’s University Directory Became Part of PostgreSQL History

Some old university home directories contain class notes and a photograph of somebody’s cat. Oleg Bartunov’s ~megera directory became one of the working addresses attached to major pieces of PostgreSQL development.

Bartunov worked at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University and has been involved with PostgreSQL since the 1990s. Conference biographies credit him with introducing locale support and, with Teodor Sigaev, developing or advancing infrastructure including GiST, GIN, full-text search and extensions such as hstore, pg_trgm, ltree and others.

A surprising amount of that history still points back into the same university URL tree.

The surviving pages include development notes for GiST and GIN indexes, tsearch2 documentation, full-text-search experiments, trigram matching, hstore, test data, presentations, benchmarks, TODO lists and utilities intended for PostgreSQL developers.

One old pg_trgm README, for example, describes trigram similarity searching and explicitly points readers to the Tsearch2 and GiST development sites under the ~megera directory. PostgreSQL mailing-list posts did the same thing. In 2010 Bartunov gave other developers a URL there for a 580 MB test dataset so they could reproduce his GIN-index results.

This was not a brochure about software development.

It was software development happening on the Web.

The research homepage became project infrastructure

Bartunov’s database work grew out of astronomy. Later PostgreSQL conference biographies explain that while working at Sternberg Astronomical Institute he needed a capable open-source database for scientific work. That eventually connected astronomical data problems with database indexing research.

The result is a particularly good example of how open-source projects used the old Web. Documentation, experiments, tarballs, talks, benchmarks and mailing-list conversations did not necessarily live in one polished project portal. They lived wherever the people doing the work had an account and some disk space.

The root of the old site is less reliable today than some of its deep pages, but substantial material under the directory still survives and is still indexed. More importantly, contemporary PostgreSQL mailing-list archives preserve the links and show how developers actually used them.

For software historians, that context matters. Modern documentation can tell you what a feature does now. An old development page can show what the authors were testing before the feature settled into its present form.

Ancient Web: Drop-D Magazine Froze Vancouver’s 1998 Music Scene in HTML

Drop-D Magazine stopped publishing in 1998. Its final issue is still sitting online like everybody went home from the office and forgot to turn off the Web server.

The December 5, 1998 homepage identifies itself as Volume 3, Number 9, Issue 99 and announces that this is the last issue after about two and a half years. The editors thank their volunteer photographers and writers, apologize for a few still-missing stories, and sign off with an enthusiastic declaration that Vancouver bands rock.

Then the archive just keeps existing.

The last issue includes live reviews of Candye Kane, Girls Against Boys, Buffalo Daughter, the Inbreds, New Pornographers, Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Rocket From the Crypt, and other acts passing through Vancouver venues. CD reviews cover everyone from Rancid and Slayer to Smashing Pumpkins and Rufus Wainwright.

The magazine’s concert database is even more useful as a historical artifact. Listings preserve names of clubs, theaters, promoters, festivals, local bands, touring packages, cancellations, and little editorial comments that would never make it into a formal music history.

A June and July 1998 calendar, for example, places bands in rooms such as the Starfish Room, Brickyard, Richard’s on Richards, Portside Room, and Whip Gallery. It records Warped Tour ’98 at the PNE Lagoon Stage, EdgeFest at Thunderbird Stadium, Ani DiFranco at Plaza of Nations, John Lee Hooker, Janet Jackson, the Spice Girls, and dozens of smaller acts sharing the same local calendar.

A local magazine becomes a time machine by accident

Drop-D called itself a “haphazardly-released publication,” which is a much more believable description of independent media than most mission statements.

The site’s value now comes partly from that messiness. This was not a retrospective database assembled decades later. It was written while shows were upcoming, albums were new, venues were open, and contributors were trying to get the next issue finished.

Usenet posts from the magazine also survive, pointing Vancouver readers to Drop-D’s weekly concert listings. That confirms the site was not merely an isolated homepage; it was plugged into the wider online music community of the period.

For researchers, the archive can help reconstruct a local scene at street level. For webmasters, it demonstrates something else the old Web did well: a small publication could accumulate structured local knowledge simply by doing its normal work. Reviews, listings, band pages, venue indexes, and issue archives eventually become a historical dataset without anybody calling it one.

Ancient Web: Purdue’s Gold Foil Page Became a Durable Piece of Courseware

A lot of university course material has a lifespan of one semester, one server migration, or one professor remembering which directory it lives in. Purdue’s old General Chemistry material on Rutherford’s gold foil experiment somehow kept going.

The page belongs to Purdue’s historical General Chemistry material and covers the experiment associated with Ernest Rutherford and the discovery of the atomic nucleus. Its surrounding section, “The Discovery of Electricity,” links the experiment into a broader sequence on early atomic theory and experimental evidence.

Visually, this is old university Web publishing in concentrated form: small pages, straightforward navigation, minimal ornament, and the assumption that the reader came for information rather than an experience.

That approach aged well.

The gold foil experiment is easy to summarize badly. Alpha particles were directed at an extremely thin sheet of gold. Most passed through with relatively little deflection, while a small fraction scattered through unexpectedly large angles. The result was inconsistent with models in which positive charge was spread diffusely through the atom and helped establish the nuclear model: most atomic mass and positive charge concentrated in a very small region.

Purdue’s page became one of the Web’s durable explanations of that story.

Courseware can quietly become infrastructure

The interesting part for CacheRat is not that Purdue teaches Rutherford. Thousands of textbooks do that.

It is that this particular teaching page escaped its original context.

Later academic papers, bibliographies, teaching-resource lists, and educational materials continued to cite the Purdue URL. A scientific bibliography published years after the page’s creation still listed “The gold foil experiment (Ernest Rutherford). Purdue” as a reference. That is what happens when a small explanatory page stays put long enough: it stops being merely course material and becomes part of the citation infrastructure around the subject.

Old university websites contain enormous amounts of this material. Some pages are obsolete. Some are wrong. Some were designed for courses that vanished twenty years ago. Others remain perfectly useful because the underlying subject did not change just because the campus CMS did.

For webmasters, Purdue’s page demonstrates the value of boring URLs and boring HTML. A resource does not need a redesign every three years to remain useful. In fact, redesigns are often how long-lived academic links die.

Ancient Web: C.Y.KONG MIDI-Fied a Pile of Analog Synths and Documented the Surgery

Some people collect vintage synthesizers and try to keep them exactly as they left the factory. C.Y.KONG appears to look at an old synth and wonder where the MIDI socket should go.

The site is a sprawling workshop log covering analog synthesizers, drum machines, MIDI-to-CV interfaces, rack conversions, repairs, and modifications. The subject list includes machines from Korg, Roland, Moog/Realistic, Powertran, PAiA, Octave, Analogue Solutions, and others.

The word MIDI-fied appears a lot.

A Korg MS-20 gets an internal MIDI-to-CV converter with pitch, gate, aftertouch, and auxiliary control voltages. A Roland SH-09 gets its own internal converter. A Powertran Transcendent 2000 gets converted into a module and then given MIDI control. A Realistic Concertmate MG-1 gets its decaying internal foam removed before receiving filter-control and MIDI work.

These are not one-paragraph project summaries. The pages show where signals were tapped, which converter boards were chosen, what voltages were required, which sockets were altered, what holes were drilled, and what compromises appeared along the way.

There is also a recurring enemy: the captive mains cable.

C.Y. repeatedly replaces old flying leads with IEC sockets and explains the hardware used to cut the openings. After enough project pages, it starts to feel less like a modification and more like a personal campaign against cords permanently attached to synthesizers.

The mistakes and annoyances are part of the documentation

The useful thing about these pages is that they read like real bench work.

The author explains why a particular MIDI-to-CV converter is too expensive, why another lacks enough auxiliary outputs, why an MS-20’s Hz-per-volt behavior complicates a plan, or why a trigger input needs additional switching so the original keyboard still works.

That is often more useful than a clean finished schematic.

A repair manual tells you how the device was intended to work. A modification diary tells you what happens when somebody actually opens it, changes the design, discovers the first idea was awkward, and finds another route.

The site’s visual style belongs to the era too. Some sections warn that they are heavy on graphics and offer lighter index options. Navigation is mostly direct links between the instrument page, modification stages, sounds, manuals, and related projects. The result is a personal technical archive rather than a polished product database.

For synthesizer owners, old modification pages can be invaluable because the equipment outlives the commercial ecosystem around it. Parts disappear. Interfaces change. MIDI remains useful, but a 1970s control-voltage synth was not waiting for it.

For web historians, C.Y.KONG is the familiar independent-web formula again: one person’s workshop experience, documented carefully enough that strangers can still learn from it years later.

Ancient Web: A 1997 Page About the Future of the Internet Predicted Its Own Afterlife

In March 1997, Kushal Dave stopped trying to keep his page about emerging Internet technology current. He left behind one excellent consolation prize: a note suggesting it might someday be useful to “Internet historians or something.”

Correct.

The page is a frozen survey of what looked important while the commercial Web was still deciding what it wanted to become. Dave had started it because he wanted something more useful than another link page. He collected new software, hardware, protocols, services, browser technologies, and network ideas, then organized links and commentary around them.

The resulting list is a wonderful mixture of winners, dead ends, ancestors, and technologies that survived in forms nobody in 1997 could fully predict.

There is Java. JavaScript. VRML. QuickTime VR. RealAudio. Shockwave. PDF. Internet telephony. Streaming video. Netscape plug-ins. PNG. Electronic cash. Conferencing systems. Whiteboards. Browser helpers. Offline browsing. The MBone. RTP. Cable modems. ISDN. Satellite Internet. Even schemes for mixing television broadcasts with related Web content.

The page also preserves period assumptions that make the technology easier to understand. A copied 1996 comparison chart puts a 28.8 kbps modem at the baseline, with ISDN at 128 kbps, a T1 at 1.54 Mbps, and ADSL still described as two or three years away. Cable modems are treated as an exciting near-future development.

The obsolete parts are now the useful parts

Dave eventually admits defeat near the top of the page. The field was growing too quickly, and professional publications were now paying people to track exactly what he had been trying to follow as a student project.

That abandoned state is what makes the page unusually valuable now.

A continually updated article would have replaced yesterday’s guesses with today’s facts. Dave’s page did not. It still shows technologies competing before the outcomes were obvious. RealAudio sits beside other streaming approaches. Browser plug-ins still look like a major architectural direction. Electronic cash is discussed as an emerging category rather than something with decades of later baggage attached to it.

Even the broken guestbook note belongs in the record.

For researchers, this is a primary-source snapshot of the mid-1990s Internet looking forward. For webmasters, it is a reminder that today’s supposedly inevitable stack will eventually look just as contingent.

Ancient Web: FDNYTrucks Built a Living Photographic Catalog of Fire Apparatus

Michael Martinelli did not build a website about fire trucks in the abstract. He built a photographic inventory detailed enough that individual engine companies, ladder companies, special units, reserve rigs, and neighboring departments get their own pages.

Martinelli identifies himself as a captain with the Hackensack, New Jersey Fire Department and a staff photographer for Fire Apparatus Journal. His site describes itself as the largest website devoted solely to fire-apparatus photography and says its FDNY section represents every first-line piece of apparatus, every special unit, and nearly every support unit.

The organization is gloriously literal.

Want Manhattan? Pick Manhattan. Want Engine 54, Ladder 4, and Battalion 9? There is a page for that company. Want marine units, Haz-Mat equipment, reserve ladders, field communications, medical units, fire patrol vehicles, airport rigs, or volunteer companies operating inside New York City? They have their own branches too.

The archive then keeps going outward.

Separate sections cover departments across New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, lower New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and other areas. Privately owned apparatus and historical collections get pages of their own. Martinelli notes a particular interest in Mack and Seagrave rigs and invites departments with examples he has missed to contact him so he can photograph them.

A fleet archive has to keep moving

The unusual thing about FDNYTrucks.com is that it is not merely historical.

Fire fleets change constantly. Companies receive replacement apparatus. Special units move. Old rigs become reserves, get sold, or disappear. New photographs therefore do more than make the site larger: they preserve successive states of a working fleet.

The homepage’s update log reads almost like dispatch traffic. A batch of engines and ladders gets added one day, several New Jersey departments another, then a special unit or privately owned rig appears later. The structure stays stable while the equipment changes underneath it.

That is useful to apparatus enthusiasts, model builders, historians, photographers, and anyone trying to identify a specific rig from a particular period. It is also the kind of reference that becomes more valuable as older photographs stop matching what is parked in the firehouse today.

The site is careful to state that it is not an official FDNY or City of New York website. The photographs are Martinelli’s own work, and the archive is built around that personal documentation rather than an agency’s public-relations system.

For webmasters, this is another case where a plain hierarchy beats a feed. Geography, department, company, apparatus: the navigation mirrors the subject. A visitor can drill down instead of searching through years of posts.

Ancient Web: The Circle of the Dragon Grew From Angelfire Into a 25-Year Dragon Reference

The Circle of the Dragon began on Angelfire in 2000 as a small site about dragons and serpents in mythology. A quarter-century later, Kylie “drago” McCormick is still maintaining it.

That history is unusually well documented because McCormick kept a site-information section explaining where the project lived, how it changed, and even what standards it used.

The original address was an Angelfire page. It moved to Brinkster in January 2001, used a shortcut URL for a while, and eventually acquired BlackDrago.com. The site says CircleOfTheDragon.com followed in 2009.

The code evolved too. It began in HTML 4.0 and shifted to XHTML 1.0 Strict in 2003. McCormick preserved screenshots of earlier designs, including enormous full-page captures from 2003 and 2006.

That alone makes the site useful to web historians: it documents its own migration out of the free-host era instead of silently replacing the past.

The small dragon page got out of hand

McCormick says the original plan was mostly to publish theories about dragons and serpents in myth. Once the “Dragons of Fame” section appeared, the scope widened.

The resulting site is a substantial personal reference work. It covers dragon traditions from different cultures, named dragons from mythology and fiction, proposed classifications, anatomy and biology, symbolism, artwork, literature, film, games, and the author’s own theories about how dragon traditions developed.

Some material is folklore, some is media cataloging, and some is explicitly speculative. The site does not magically turn mythology into zoology simply because it has diagrams and categories. But that mix is part of the artifact: this is what one person built after decades of reading, organizing, illustrating, and arguing with a subject she cared about.

The site’s information page was still being revised in June 2024. That matters. Plenty of old personal sites survive as abandoned snapshots; this one crossed from Angelfire-era hobby publishing into a maintained long-term project.

Modern web publishing often pushes people toward a feed: post something, let it fall down the timeline, post again. The Circle of the Dragon followed the older encyclopedia model instead. Pages accumulated. Categories deepened. Links connected related material. The website became the project.

For webmasters, that durability is worth studying. The site has changed hosts, domains, markup standards, and visual designs without surrendering its identity to a platform.
