Ancient Web: Purdue’s Gold Foil Page Became a Durable Piece of Courseware

A lot of university course material has a lifespan of one semester, one server migration, or one professor remembering which directory it lives in. Purdue’s old General Chemistry material on Rutherford’s gold foil experiment somehow kept going.

The page belongs to Purdue’s historical General Chemistry material and covers the experiment associated with Ernest Rutherford and the discovery of the atomic nucleus. Its surrounding section, “The Discovery of Electricity,” links the experiment into a broader sequence on early atomic theory and experimental evidence.

Visually, this is old university Web publishing in concentrated form: small pages, straightforward navigation, minimal ornament, and the assumption that the reader came for information rather than an experience.

That approach aged well.

The gold foil experiment is easy to summarize badly. Alpha particles were directed at an extremely thin sheet of gold. Most passed through with relatively little deflection, while a small fraction scattered through unexpectedly large angles. The result was inconsistent with models in which positive charge was spread diffusely through the atom and helped establish the nuclear model: most atomic mass and positive charge concentrated in a very small region.

Purdue’s page became one of the Web’s durable explanations of that story.

Courseware can quietly become infrastructure

The interesting part for CacheRat is not that Purdue teaches Rutherford. Thousands of textbooks do that.

It is that this particular teaching page escaped its original context.

Later academic papers, bibliographies, teaching-resource lists, and educational materials continued to cite the Purdue URL. A scientific bibliography published years after the page’s creation still listed “The gold foil experiment (Ernest Rutherford). Purdue” as a reference. That is what happens when a small explanatory page stays put long enough: it stops being merely course material and becomes part of the citation infrastructure around the subject.

Old university websites contain enormous amounts of this material. Some pages are obsolete. Some are wrong. Some were designed for courses that vanished twenty years ago. Others remain perfectly useful because the underlying subject did not change just because the campus CMS did.

For webmasters, Purdue’s page demonstrates the value of boring URLs and boring HTML. A resource does not need a redesign every three years to remain useful. In fact, redesigns are often how long-lived academic links die.
