Tim’s Hong Kong Movie Reviews began for an extremely practical reason: Tim had watched enough Hong Kong films that he wanted an online record of what he had seen. The result became a large personal movie database built without pretending to be IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes or anything else with investors.

The site says every movie listed is one Tim personally watched. Reviews often include where or how he saw the film, DVD covers, Cantonese titles and enough plot description to help him remember what happened later. The alphabetical indexes stretch across decades of Hong Kong cinema, from older productions through much more recent releases.

That original purpose explains the site’s voice. It is a personal reference collection first and a publication second.

A Film Site With Side Quests

The main attraction is the review archive, but the site has the kind of miscellaneous branches that made personal websites fun to explore. There is information about Video CDs, a random Hong Kong movie title generator, notes about computer-generated effects and even a feature devoted to nose picking in Stephen Chow movies.

None of those sections needed to exist. That is their strongest qualification for existing.

The About page explains that Tim originally had trouble finding people to discuss Hong Kong films with, and encouragement from Mark at Heroic Cinema helped push him toward creating his own site. By 2004 he was also submitting reviews elsewhere, but the personal archive remained.

Deliberately Not Rebuilt Every Three Years

One of the better details is Tim’s explanation for keeping the site relatively simple: moving and redesigning reviews would take time away from watching movies.

That is a surprisingly durable web-development strategy.

The result is not visually fashionable, but the URLs, indexes and accumulated writing remain useful. Cantonese titles are retained alongside English ones, with the site crediting sources including Hong Kong Film Archive material. A researcher looking for an older title can encounter one person’s firsthand viewing notes instead of another automatically generated database record.

Personal film sites like this used to be common because publishing did not require turning every interest into a brand. You watched movies, wrote about them and connected the pages together. If several thousand entries accumulated, apparently you had a database now.

Ancient Web: One Website Catalogs 322 Brooklyn Parquet Floor Borders

Somebody looked at the decorative parquet borders in old Brooklyn houses and decided the correct response was to build an enormous website about them. FloorBorders.com now catalogs 322 examples of face-nailed parquetry borders from roughly the 1880–1920 period, which is exactly the kind of obsessive documentation the open Web is good at.

The collection concentrates on the thin, face-nailed parquet flooring found in older Brooklyn buildings, especially work from the peak period around 1890–1915. Instead of treating those floors as background decoration, the site breaks their patterns into families and studies how they were actually assembled.

There are 16 major pattern groups divided into 62 subgroups. Categories include feature strips, corner knots, meanders and Greek keys, folded ribbons, twisted ribbons and chains. Once you start looking closely, a floor that initially reads as “fancy old wood” turns into a vocabulary of repeated geometric systems.

Pictures Are Only the Beginning

The site goes well beyond a photo gallery. It includes 20 pages of measured drawings and 12 spreadsheets for calculating piece dimensions. There is also a location map, historical material, scans from old catalogs and discussion of the woods and construction methods used in the floors.

That makes it useful to more than architecture tourists. A woodworker trying to reconstruct a damaged border can study the geometry. A preservationist can compare patterns. A researcher can connect surviving floors to period catalogs and manufacturing practices.

The site map reportedly spans hundreds of pages. This is what happens when a narrow subject is given enough attention that it stops being narrow.

Documentation Nobody Was Obligated to Make

In a Brownstoner discussion, the site’s creator described starting the project after looking through Brooklyn houses and realizing there was little consolidated information about the borders he kept seeing. He photographed examples and documented what he learned while installing face-nailed flooring himself.

That origin matters. FloorBorders.com is not an institutional preservation database assembled because a grant required one. It is the result of somebody encountering a hole in the available knowledge and filling it.

Modern search engines are very good at answering broad questions. They are less dependable when the question becomes, “What is the geometry of this specific 120-year-old parquet border in a Brooklyn brownstone?” Fortunately, someone already went down that rabbit hole and left the ladder in place.

Ancient Web: Purdue’s Old General Chemistry Help Site Still Explains Atoms and Ions

Purdue still has an old General Chemistry Help page that explains the difference between atoms and ions with almost no ceremony: count the protons, count the electrons, and see whether the charges balance. The page looks modest because it was built to teach chemistry, not to audition for a redesign.

The explanation starts from electrically neutral atoms, where the number of electrons matches the number of protons, then shows how losing or gaining electrons creates charged ions. Sodium and chlorine provide the practical example: neutral sodium metal and chlorine gas are highly reactive substances, while sodium and chloride ions can sit together in ordinary table salt without making dinner unusually exciting.

That page is only one piece of a much larger teaching site.

A Whole Chemistry Course Built From Links

Purdue’s General Chemistry material contains topic reviews covering measurements, stoichiometry, gases, thermochemistry, atomic structure, ionic and covalent compounds, metals, acids and bases, oxidation-reduction reactions and other introductory material.

The broader help site also links course information, laboratory material, problem-solving resources, glossaries, old tests and lecture demonstrations. Instead of hiding everything inside a learning-management system that requires an account and a current enrollment, much of the instructional material lives as ordinary public webpages.

Some surrounding pages reveal their age more clearly than the chemistry does. Old software-help material references Netscape, Eudora Lite and VRML browsers. A lecture-demonstration page carries a 2002 update date and includes the sort of browser and frame instructions that used to be normal housekeeping for educational websites.

The Content Outlived the Interface

There is a useful lesson for webmasters here. The atoms-and-ions page does not need JavaScript, animation, a user account or an application framework to explain a chemical idea. Its usefulness is mostly in the writing, diagrams and links.

That simplicity has aged surprisingly well. Browser fashions changed repeatedly around it while the basic educational job remained the same.

For chemistry students, the material is still a quick reference. For Internet-history researchers, the larger site preserves an era when universities often published course resources directly onto the open Web, where a student twenty years later can still stumble into them through a search engine.

Ancient Web: Project E.U.N.U.C.H. Put a 25 MHz 486 in a Freezer

Project E.U.N.U.C.H. started with an Intel 486 SX rated for 25 MHz and a question that should probably have ended with “don’t.” Instead, the builders put the machine in a household refrigerator/freezer and tried to overclock it until either the benchmark improved or physics filed a complaint.

The name stands for Extreme Use of Nearly Universal Cooling Hardware. The site’s premise was partly a joke about the race toward 1 GHz processors around the turn of the millennium: rather than buying new hardware, could a pile of obsolete parts be bullied into contemporary performance with extreme cooling?

The Parts Bin Meets the Frozen-Food Aisle

The ingredient list is gloriously period-correct. The page prices an old motherboard at three pounds, the 486 SX at fifty pence, a power supply and hard disk at two pounds each, and three fans at another three pounds. A 3dfx Voodoo Graphics card appears because eventually someone intended to play a game on this thing.

Then there is the refrigerator/freezer.

The experiment escalates through increasingly aggressive clock speeds while the computer sits in an environment intended for peas and fish fingers rather than exposed electronics. The site’s final account claims the 25 MHz chip reached 247 MHz and even ran Half-Life briefly before the hardware failed.

That number deserves the word “claims.” The authors themselves admit that logs, notes and recordings were lost or destroyed and reconstruct the ending from eyewitness accounts. This is not a laboratory paper. It is early-2000s enthusiast computing wearing safety goggles it probably found on the floor.

Overclocking Before It Became a Product Category

The page matters because it captures the culture around overclocking when modification still meant jumpers, improvised cooling and accepting that a component might not survive the afternoon. Today, manufacturers sell CPUs, motherboards, liquid coolers and firmware specifically designed around performance tuning. Project E.U.N.U.C.H. belongs to the earlier era when the method could genuinely be “find junk, get it cold, increase voltage, see what catches fire.”

A 2001 AnandTech forum discussion was already passing the project around, so the stunt was part of enthusiast Web culture at the time rather than a later retrocomputing recreation.

Whether every final megahertz survived rigorous measurement is almost beside the point. The experiment, photos, component list and deeply irresponsible optimism are the artifact.

Ancient Web: A 1999 Sociology Paper Mapped the Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers Fandom

Julie Bihn’s old Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers pages preserve something better than another character shrine: a small piece of actual research into what an Internet fandom looked like in 1999, complete with surveys, fanfiction counts and the eternal question of which cartoon rodents should date whom.

The romance section records a 42-person Internet survey asking, among other things, who Gadget should wind up with. Roughly 60 percent favored Chip and Gadget, while Dale and Foxglove drew even stronger support as a pairing. This is niche information of an almost weaponized purity, but the surrounding material gives it historical value.

Bihn was studying the community itself.

A Fandom Small Enough to Count

Her paper, Come Along, You Belong, Feel the Fizz… An Analysis of the Internet “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers’ Fan Community, is dated April 29, 1999 and was written for a Sociology of Popular Culture course.

The paper describes an online community built around a 65-episode Disney cartoon that had already left first-run television. At the time, Bihn counted at least 50 separate websites, an active message board, hundreds of pieces of fanfiction and fan art, and a core community she estimated at fewer than 120 people.

Another surviving page cites a Rescue Rangers database containing 69 webpages and 128 fan-written works, while an Internet Gadget Archive held 147 images. Those are tiny numbers by modern platform standards. They also make the community legible in a way a fandom scattered across millions of algorithmic posts often is not.

When the Website Was the Social Network

The most interesting part is not the shipping survey. It is the infrastructure around it: personal homepages, web rings, message boards, archives and people manually linking to one another.

Bihn even records how those online relationships escaped the screen. When one member was hospitalized with lung cancer, about twenty fans contributed to a physical card sent to him. The community was small enough that individual people were visible to one another.

This is useful evidence against the idea that online fandom began with modern social media. By 1999, fans were already building archives, conducting surveys, writing enormous quantities of derivative fiction, arguing about fictional relationships and forming real friendships through networked communities.

The technology changed. The people, apparently, arrived fully formed.

Ancient Web: NASA Still Hosts the POLAR Experiment’s CMB Pages

NASA still hosts an educational page from POLAR, a turn-of-the-millennium experiment built to look for polarization in the cosmic microwave background. It is the sort of science website that quietly became historical while continuing to explain its subject perfectly well.

The page introduces the cosmic microwave background, or CMB, as the cooled remnant radiation of the early universe. It discusses the nearly perfect blackbody spectrum measured by COBE at about 2.7 kelvin, the tiny temperature variations at roughly the level of one part in 100,000, and the importance of polarization for extracting still more information about the young universe.

That explanation is attached to a real instrument rather than a generic astronomy lesson.

A Microwave Experiment in Wisconsin

POLAR stood for Polarization Observations of Large Angular Regions. The project used a correlation polarimeter operating in the Ka band, roughly 26–36 GHz, to search for very faint large-scale CMB polarization.

The project’s timeline traces its beginnings to work proposed at Brown University in 1993. Development continued through the decade, and the group later moved to the University of Wisconsin. The instrument saw first light around the end of 1998 and eventually collected roughly 750 hours of data at Pine Bluff Observatory in Wisconsin between March and May 2000.

This was precision cosmology performed with a ground-based microwave instrument, cryogenic amplifiers and a signal measured in microkelvin. The project’s final result placed an upper limit of about 10 microkelvin on large-angular-scale E- and B-mode polarization. The radiometer was later incorporated into the COMPASS experiment.

A Scientific Project Frozen Near Its Working State

What makes the old POLAR pages useful now is their proximity to the experiment itself. The site preserves explanations, hardware descriptions, a project timeline and links written by people close to the work rather than a retrospective summary assembled decades later.

It also shows what scientific web publishing looked like before research projects routinely arrived wrapped in modern CMS templates, social accounts and polished institutional newsrooms. The navigation is plain. The diagrams and text do the work. Some pages still carry modification dates from 2002.

For students, the material remains a readable introduction to CMB polarization. For historians of science and the Web, it preserves something else: the online working footprint of a small cosmology experiment at the moment precision measurements of the early universe were accelerating rapidly.

Ancient Web: A 1999 Matrix RPG Sourcebook Was Built for Any Game System

Not long after The Matrix arrived in theaters, Daniel Pond built a tabletop role-playing sourcebook for it on the Web. Instead of inventing another pile of combat tables, he deliberately made the project “systemless” so groups could bolt the setting onto whatever RPG rules they already liked.

The surviving page identifies the project as The Matrix RPG: A Systemless Sourcebook and dates Pond’s work to 1999–2001. That puts it squarely in the first wave of fan attempts to turn the movie’s world into something players could explore before the franchise accumulated the mountain of official material it has today.

Rules Without Much in the Way of Rules

The sourcebook uses narrative categories rather than a full numerical system. When it needs scale, it leans on simple levels such as Minor, Moderate and Major. The idea is to provide the fictional machinery β€” people, abilities, the Matrix itself and ways to structure a game β€” while leaving dice mechanics to the group.

That approach also made the project unusually portable. A group could adapt it to a favorite commercial RPG, a homebrew system or something almost entirely narrative.

Pond even treats the Operator as a useful game-master character, giving the person running the game a natural presence inside the fiction. That is a neat solution to a setting where information from outside the Matrix matters constantly.

The Fan Web as an Expansion Pack

Before fan wikis became enormous centralized databases, projects like this often lived as individual websites. Somebody watched a movie, decided the official universe did not contain the thing they wanted, and built it themselves.

The result could be rough, unofficial and legally unambiguous about belonging to somebody else’s franchise, but it could also be useful. The page openly identifies The Matrix as Warner’s property while presenting Pond’s work as a free fan-made RPG resource.

That combination β€” personal authorship, free distribution and a weirdly specific practical goal β€” is one of the old Web’s recurring patterns. The site did not need millions of visitors. It needed enough information for a few friends to say, “Fine, we’re playing The Matrix tonight.”

More than two decades later, the sourcebook is still there.

Ancient Web: An Iraq War UFO Conspiracy Index Is Still Sitting Online

A web page can be useful without being trustworthy. Biblioteca Pleyades has an old index devoted to UFO stories involving Saddam Hussein and Iraq, and it survives as a remarkably concentrated sample of the conspiracy Web that grew around the Gulf conflicts and the 2003 Iraq War.

This is not a page to cite for Iraqi military history. It is interesting because it preserves what people were circulating, linking and speculating about online at the time.

The index points to dated UFO ROUNDUP stories with titles such as “UFOs intervene in Operation Desert Fox” from 1998, “Saddam’s Area 51?” from 2002 and several 2003 pieces published while the invasion and occupation of Iraq dominated the news. Later entries wander into claims about alien weapons, secret meetings and the usual assortment of material that develops when current events collide with UFO folklore.

Before Conspiracy Content Became a Feed

The structure is as revealing as the claims. There is no endless recommendation engine deciding which increasingly dramatic video should play next. Instead, the reader gets a hand-built web of hyperlinks: Iraq leads to UFO reports, which lead to “stargates,” unusual weapons, Planet X and other adjacent ideas.

That old hyperlink structure is useful to researchers because it exposes the connections explicitly. You can see which subjects the site’s editors considered related and approximately when particular claims entered the collection.

In that sense, the page is a small historical record of Internet rumor transmission. The value is not that its extraordinary claims suddenly become evidence because they survived for twenty years. They do not. The value is that the original vocabulary, dates, headlines and associations remain visible.

Internet Folklore With Its Labels Still Attached

A lot of old conspiracy material has since been copied into videos, social posts and content farms with its origin stripped away. Pages like this preserve more context. They show the story in the ecosystem that actually carried it.

For anyone studying post-9/11 Internet culture, UFO communities or how geopolitical events were absorbed into online mythology, that is worth having. Sometimes digital preservation means keeping the questionable material too, because future researchers need to know what people were actually reading.

Ancient Web: Chuck Moore’s colorForth Replaced Punctuation With Color

Chuck Moore, the creator of Forth, has spent decades trying to make computers do more with less. His colorForth site is a surviving notebook from that obsession: a programming environment where color replaces much of the punctuation and syntax that other languages keep adding.

The basic idea is stranger than ordinary syntax highlighting. In colorForth, the colors are part of the language. Red introduces a new definition, green marks compiled words, yellow marks words to execute immediately, and other colors carry other functions. The source is not ordinary text with decorative coloring painted over it afterward. The color participates in how the code is interpreted.

A Programming Environment That Barely Exists

Moore’s colorForth pages describe a system that could run under Windows or boot without a conventional operating system. The core was measured in kilobytes rather than megabytes, and the keyboard layout used a compact 27-key arrangement based on Dvorak.

The source representation was equally unusual. Words were stored in a pre-parsed compressed form with bits reserved for their color and function. Programs were organized into small blocks rather than ordinary text files. The whole thing reflects Moore’s long-running argument that software becomes more understandable when unnecessary layers are removed rather than hidden behind still more layers.

That makes colorForth interesting even if you never intend to use it. It is an unusually complete example of a programmer questioning assumptions that most software simply inherited.

Then He Used It to Design Chips

The site also preserves material about OKAD, Moore’s VLSI design tools. He describes a remarkably small colorForth codebase capable of laying out and simulating integrated circuits and generating manufacturing data. The surrounding pages lead into his work on highly parallel processors built from many tiny Forth-oriented cores.

There is also historical material reaching much farther back, including Moore’s early book Programming a Problem-Oriented Language. That turns the site into more than a download page for one eccentric language. It connects several decades of the same design philosophy: small programs, direct control and aggressive skepticism toward complexity for complexity’s sake.

Modern software development rarely rewards that kind of stubborn minimalism. That is precisely why the surviving pages are useful. They document what happens when someone keeps asking how much of the conventional computer stack is actually necessary.

Ancient Web: ICYouSee Was Online in 1994 and Turned the Titanic Into Web Data

ICYouSee belongs to the generation of websites that existed before most people had decided what a website was supposed to look like. The site, created and maintained by John R. Henderson, went online in December 1994. One of its most durable projects used the Titanic passenger list as something the Web could organize, compare and explore.

The Titanic material first appeared in 1998 and broke passenger information into demographic tables: nationality, travel class, survival, deaths and lifeboat occupancy. Instead of treating the disaster only as a narrative, the site made the passenger list legible as data.

That sounds ordinary now. In 1998, it was a much more interesting use of a browser.

Before the Titanic Dataset Became a Machine-Learning ClichΓ©

Today, a version of Titanic passenger data is famous because it became a standard beginner dataset for statistics and machine learning. Students routinely predict survival with decision trees or logistic regression before they know much about the historical source.

ICYouSee represents an earlier stage of that transformation. The purpose was not a Kaggle exercise. The tables were meant to help readers inspect the people aboard the ship and compare who survived.

Later statistical literature discussing the many versions of the Titanic dataset specifically points back to Henderson’s ICYouSee page and dates the site’s launch to 1994 and the Titanic page to June 1998.

HTML 3.2, Background Images and a Cat GIF

Surviving descriptions of the site also preserve its technical character: HTML 3.2-era markup, a background image, old font and align attributes, a small cat graphic and a navigation structure built before responsive design became an expectation.

That is not merely visual nostalgia. It tells us what a serious educational site looked like when the Web’s conventions were still unsettled.

ICYouSee mixed historical material, personal pages, finding tools and educational resources under one independent domain. Its Titanic work is especially valuable because it sits at the intersection of Internet history and data history: a historical passenger list becoming a browsable dataset years before “data science” became a mainstream label.

The live site is now unreliable, which makes the surviving references to its structure and publication dates more important, not less.
