Ancient Web: NASA Still Hosts the POLAR Experiment’s CMB Pages

NASA still hosts an educational page from POLAR, a turn-of-the-millennium experiment built to look for polarization in the cosmic microwave background. It is the sort of science website that quietly became historical while continuing to explain its subject perfectly well.

The page introduces the cosmic microwave background, or CMB, as the cooled remnant radiation of the early universe. It discusses the nearly perfect blackbody spectrum measured by COBE at about 2.7 kelvin, the tiny temperature variations at roughly the level of one part in 100,000, and the importance of polarization for extracting still more information about the young universe.

That explanation is attached to a real instrument rather than a generic astronomy lesson.

A Microwave Experiment in Wisconsin

POLAR stood for Polarization Observations of Large Angular Regions. The project used a correlation polarimeter operating in the Ka band, roughly 26–36 GHz, to search for very faint large-scale CMB polarization.

The project’s timeline traces its beginnings to work proposed at Brown University in 1993. Development continued through the decade, and the group later moved to the University of Wisconsin. The instrument saw first light around the end of 1998 and eventually collected roughly 750 hours of data at Pine Bluff Observatory in Wisconsin between March and May 2000.

This was precision cosmology performed with a ground-based microwave instrument, cryogenic amplifiers and a signal measured in microkelvin. The project’s final result placed an upper limit of about 10 microkelvin on large-angular-scale E- and B-mode polarization. The radiometer was later incorporated into the COMPASS experiment.

A Scientific Project Frozen Near Its Working State

What makes the old POLAR pages useful now is their proximity to the experiment itself. The site preserves explanations, hardware descriptions, a project timeline and links written by people close to the work rather than a retrospective summary assembled decades later.

It also shows what scientific web publishing looked like before research projects routinely arrived wrapped in modern CMS templates, social accounts and polished institutional newsrooms. The navigation is plain. The diagrams and text do the work. Some pages still carry modification dates from 2002.

For students, the material remains a readable introduction to CMB polarization. For historians of science and the Web, it preserves something else: the online working footprint of a small cosmology experiment at the moment precision measurements of the early universe were accelerating rapidly.
