Project E.U.N.U.C.H. started with an Intel 486 SX rated for 25 MHz and a question that should probably have ended with “don’t.” Instead, the builders put the machine in a household refrigerator/freezer and tried to overclock it until either the benchmark improved or physics filed a complaint.
The name stands for Extreme Use of Nearly Universal Cooling Hardware. The site’s premise was partly a joke about the race toward 1 GHz processors around the turn of the millennium: rather than buying new hardware, could a pile of obsolete parts be bullied into contemporary performance with extreme cooling?
The Parts Bin Meets the Frozen-Food Aisle
The ingredient list is gloriously period-correct. The page prices an old motherboard at three pounds, the 486 SX at fifty pence, a power supply and hard disk at two pounds each, and three fans at another three pounds. A 3dfx Voodoo Graphics card appears because eventually someone intended to play a game on this thing.
Then there is the refrigerator/freezer.
The experiment escalates through increasingly aggressive clock speeds while the computer sits in an environment intended for peas and fish fingers rather than exposed electronics. The site’s final account claims the 25 MHz chip reached 247 MHz and even ran Half-Life briefly before the hardware failed.
That number deserves the word “claims.” The authors themselves admit that logs, notes and recordings were lost or destroyed and reconstruct the ending from eyewitness accounts. This is not a laboratory paper. It is early-2000s enthusiast computing wearing safety goggles it probably found on the floor.
Overclocking Before It Became a Product Category
The page matters because it captures the culture around overclocking when modification still meant jumpers, improvised cooling and accepting that a component might not survive the afternoon. Today, manufacturers sell CPUs, motherboards, liquid coolers and firmware specifically designed around performance tuning. Project E.U.N.U.C.H. belongs to the earlier era when the method could genuinely be “find junk, get it cold, increase voltage, see what catches fire.”
A 2001 AnandTech forum discussion was already passing the project around, so the stunt was part of enthusiast Web culture at the time rather than a later retrocomputing recreation.
Whether every final megahertz survived rigorous measurement is almost beside the point. The experiment, photos, component list and deeply irresponsible optimism are the artifact.
