The domain belongs to Thomas Adam, a Unix and open-source developer whose name continues to appear in current software documentation. Recent Game of Trees portable documentation, for example, still lists Adam and his xteddy.org address among the authors.

That continuity is the interesting part. The personal domain is not merely a fossil from an earlier phase of the Web. It remains attached to ongoing technical work while also carrying older material and mirrors from previous projects.

This used to be a normal shape for technical identity online. A developer had a domain. The domain might contain a homepage, notes, source code, mirrors, old projects, contact information, experiments, and material that did not belong anywhere else. Years later, some of it would be obsolete, some still useful, and some valuable mainly because nobody else bothered to keep it.

AskMrWizard became a home for animated technical lessons covering computers, networking, and security. One particularly interesting branch grew out of Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte’s Security Now podcast.

Gibson discussed Bosen’s work on the show itself. Bosen had asked permission to create animated versions of selected, more technical episodes—the sort Gibson jokingly classified as the “propeller-head” material. AskMrWizard then built visual supplements around topics that were difficult to communicate with voices alone.

That included material related to the show’s classic “How the Internet Works” explanations. Instead of reducing networking to a glossy infographic, Bosen broke the subjects into animated lessons that could be watched alongside or after the original discussion.

Dolphins was produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films, narrated by Pierce Brosnan, and built around scientists studying wild dolphins in the Bahamas and Patagonia. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject and became one of the major giant-screen documentary releases of its year.

Its website belonged to a very specific moment in Internet history. Film sites around 2000 were becoming multimedia extensions of the theatrical experience. They might contain educational material, behind-the-scenes sections, downloadable files, cast and production information, teacher resources, and little interactive pieces that made the site feel less like an advertisement and more like a companion CD-ROM that happened to live online.

Bob Cromwell’s site branches into Linux and Unix administration, cybersecurity, networking, travel, history, 3-D scanning, image analysis, Turkish grammar, cryptography, toilets, and whatever else apparently survived the question, “Should I put this on the website?”

The answer was usually yes.

That makes the site a useful specimen of the personal Web at industrial scale. Modern publishing advice tells site owners to define a target audience, build content pillars, and maintain topical authority. Cromwell’s site behaves more like a private technical notebook, classroom, travel journal, and museum sharing one domain.

The Linux material alone includes administration commands, boot processes, SSH, TCP/IP configuration, security, DNS, and system tuning. Elsewhere the site gets into 3-D laser scanning for biology and archaeology, Turkish grammar, historical subjects, travel photography, and a long-running collection about toilets around the world.

That last section is not merely a joke category. Other publications have cited Cromwell’s pages when writing about international toilets and bidets. The same domain that can explain Linux service control can also explain plumbing customs in another country.

Calling it a blog would be misleading. It behaves more like a privately maintained reference library with hallways added whenever another collection needed somewhere to go.

The scale becomes obvious quickly. There are pages comparing early and revised editions of Nancy Drew books chapter by chapter. There are large Stargate SG-1 sections, pages on classic stage actress Maude Adams, material on Japanese-American incarceration during World War II, Japanese education, film, anime, historical documents, reviews, scans, and commentary.

The homepage still carries a 1998 copyright notice. From there the site branches into her story, photographs, FAQs, material on silver marketing, naturopaths, references, and years of accumulated argument.

The Internet Gadget Archive is dedicated primarily to Gadget Hackwrench, the mechanically gifted mouse from Rescue Rangers. That sounds like an extremely narrow reason to build a website. In 1995, that was not a problem. Narrow reasons were practically the Web’s native fuel.

The Archive was launched by Paltiel Goldstein on June 12, 1995. Ranger fandom histories describe it as the first dedicated Rescue Rangers website. Its early purpose was simple: collect Gadget material that fans were otherwise passing around through mailing lists, personal files, and scattered online communities.

That meant fan art, fan fiction, images, and other contributions. The important part is not merely that somebody liked a cartoon character enough to make a homepage. People still do that. The difference is that the Archive became infrastructure for a fandom before social platforms made fan communities look standardized.

There was no Tumblr tag, Discord server, Reddit community, or fandom wiki waiting to absorb everything. If you wanted a permanent place for a niche community’s material, somebody had to create one, host the files, organize the links, answer email, and keep paying attention.

Early LEGO Mindstorms was sold as a robotics toy, but the interesting people immediately wanted to get underneath the toy part. Dave Baum helped them do it with Not Quite C, a compact C-like programming language for the LEGO RCX brick.

Baum was an engineer and one of the important figures in the first generation of serious Mindstorms hacking. NQC gave builders a more programmer-friendly alternative to the graphical tools bundled with the Robotics Invention System. Instead of dragging blocks around a screen, users could write text code, build reusable functions, manage sensors and motors directly, and generally treat the RCX more like the tiny embedded computer it actually was.

The language spread well beyond one homepage. Books, university pages, robotics clubs, and hobbyist documentation pointed readers toward Baum’s site and NQC.
