Ancient Web: XTeddy Kept a Unix Hacker’s Personal Domain Useful

XTeddy is a useful reminder that a personal domain does not need to become a brand, newsletter, or startup to remain valuable for decades.

The domain belongs to Thomas Adam, a Unix and open-source developer whose name continues to appear in current software documentation. Recent Game of Trees portable documentation, for example, still lists Adam and his xteddy.org address among the authors.

That continuity is the interesting part. The personal domain is not merely a fossil from an earlier phase of the Web. It remains attached to ongoing technical work while also carrying older material and mirrors from previous projects.

This used to be a normal shape for technical identity online. A developer had a domain. The domain might contain a homepage, notes, source code, mirrors, old projects, contact information, experiments, and material that did not belong anywhere else. Years later, some of it would be obsolete, some still useful, and some valuable mainly because nobody else bothered to keep it.

XTeddy fits that model better than the modern professional profile page. It is not optimized to funnel a visitor toward one action. It is a persistent address associated with a person and his work.

That persistence matters in open-source communities. Names move between projects. Hosting services disappear. University accounts expire. Companies get acquired. A personal domain can act as the stable layer underneath all of those transitions.

Search results around XTeddy also expose another old-Web habit: hosting mirrors for other material. Older sites and projects sometimes survive partly because somebody with spare disk space and a durable domain decided they were worth keeping. There was no preservation grant, no platform migration project, and frequently no announcement. The files simply remained reachable.

For researchers, these personal technical domains are disproportionately useful because they preserve context that software repositories alone do not. A Git commit tells you what changed. A homepage or mirror can tell you what somebody was interested in, which adjacent projects mattered, what tools they used, and what they thought was worth linking.

The design lesson is almost aggressively boring: own an address and keep it. A domain maintained for twenty years becomes useful in ways that cannot be predicted when it is registered.

CacheRat’s 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list contains plenty of abandoned personal pages. XTeddy is more interesting because the identity behind the domain never fully detached from the technical Web around it.

The page does not need a dramatic historical event to justify surviving. Sometimes the contribution is simply continuity: the same person’s address, work, mirrors, and technical presence remaining linkable while the platforms around them keep changing names.
