Ancient Web: KnotPlot Has Been Turning Mathematics Into 3D Knots Since the 1990s

KnotPlot looks like somebody gave topology a graphics workstation and then refused to stop experimenting for thirty years. It is part mathematical reference, part software project, part image gallery, and part personal laboratory.

Robert Scharein built KnotPlot out of work connected to his PhD at the University of British Columbia’s Imager Computer Graphics Laboratory. The software visualizes and manipulates mathematical knots and links in three and four dimensions, and the site says almost all of its images were generated with KnotPlot itself.

That immediately makes the website more interesting than a normal gallery. The pictures are output from the subject being documented. Decorative knots, Brunnian links, torus knots, knot carpets, stereoscopic images, cubic-lattice knots, hyperbolic knots, Celtic knots, Moebius-strip knots, and stranger constructions sit alongside thesis material and technical references.

The software side is just as substantial. KnotPlot can load a database of more than 3,000 knots and links, let the user sketch knots in 3D, construct them with Conway notation, use a tangle calculator, generate special knot families, and transform existing knots. Current builds still exist for Windows, macOS, and Linux, which is remarkable enough for a program whose copyright line reaches back to 1992.

The site also retains unmistakable old-Web texture. Some galleries are polished and useful. Others are openly filed under a section titled “Pages with little or no interesting content,” because apparently deletion is for cowards. There are PostScript examples, POV-Ray output, thesis figures, stereoscopic experiments, and pages whose main justification seems to be that Scharein once wanted to see what a particular knot would look like.

That accumulation is precisely why the site matters. Modern software documentation tends to explain features. KnotPlot preserves years of intellectual wandering around the features: experiments, pictures, weird side paths, references, obsolete rendering techniques, and the research lineage behind the program.

For somebody studying mathematical visualization, early Web graphics, scientific personal sites, OpenGL software, or just the visual culture around topology, it is an unusually dense primary source.

It also demonstrates one of the Ancient Web project’s recurring lessons: a specialist website becomes valuable by refusing to flatten itself. It does not need to turn every experiment into a clean product page. The mess contains history.

Ancient Web: KeyHut Still Turns Old PCs Into Cash Registers

KeyHut’s cash-register software is a reminder that an old computer does not become useless just because Silicon Valley has stopped admiring it.

The program, maintained by Dale Harris, turns a DOS or Windows PC into a point-of-sale terminal. It handles the things an actual small shop needs: receipts, inventory, taxes, employee access, scanners, cash drawers, customer information, sales history, ticket sales, scales, networking, and assorted retail hardware.

What it deliberately does not require is almost more interesting.

The documentation says the program does not need a mouse. It does not process credit cards itself. It does not need a modern graphical interface. Keyboard navigation is treated as an advantage because cash-register work consists largely of repeating known actions quickly.

The site is equally direct about price: the software is free.

Harris’s donation pitch asks satisfied users for five dollars, donated equipment, a link from their Web site, or helper software. It reads less like a software company funnel and more like somebody keeping a useful machine alive because people keep using it.

Software that refuses to become obsolete

KeyHut is valuable as old-Web archaeology because the page and the program reinforce each other.

The site explains parallel-port printers, serial devices, pole displays, receipt printers, scanners, DOSBox, older Windows versions, networking, and file-based register configuration. It assumes the reader might still have hardware that most modern software has forgotten exists.

That is not purely nostalgic. Old retail equipment can be durable, cheap, and perfectly adequate for a small operation. A computer that would be miserable at running a modern browser can be extremely competent at adding prices, printing receipts, and opening a cash drawer.

The documentation even explains that the .POS file effectively is the register configuration, a wonderfully concrete contrast with modern cloud software where the important state may live somewhere the user cannot see.

The result is an odd kind of longevity. The interface looks ancient because the job did not require reinvention.

A touchscreen, subscription, analytics dashboard, and animated onboarding sequence would certainly make this more modern.

Ancient Web: Canadian Mind Products Is a Java Reference Library Attached to an Entire Worldview

Canadian Mind Products is what happens when a programmer decides a website does not need to pick one subject, one tone, or even one reason to exist.

Roedy Green’s site describes one of its goals as teaching people to use computers effectively, particularly the Java language. Around that technical core grew a sprawling collection of downloads, hardware notes, Java material, applets, environmental writing, ethics, Esperanto, quotations, essays, and personal argument.

The navigation feels less like a publication than a map of one person’s brain.

The Java part alone is a web artifact

Canadian Mind Products became especially well known for its Java material. The site still exposes a Java section alongside downloads, hardware references, applets, site maps, and old utilities. It also built tools for mirroring the website locally, including a “Replicator” system whose documentation explicitly discusses keeping a copy in case the site ever disappears.

That preservation instinct feels almost prophetic now.

The broader site is much stranger than a programming reference. Technical pages sit beside environmental advocacy, politics, religion, human rights, money, relationships, and long personal quotations. There is no editorial effort to make those categories feel like one clean brand.

That is precisely why it belongs to the older web.

A personal website could be a technical manual in one directory, an argument in the next, a software archive somewhere else, and a running notebook everywhere in between. Search engines indexed the pages individually, so the whole site did not have to fit into one marketable identity.

The result can be abrasive, useful, obsessive, outdated, insightful, or all five within a few clicks.

What matters historically is the shape of it: one person accumulating knowledge in public over years, without flattening it into a content strategy.
