Ancient Web: 2600 Kept a Calendar of Hacked Websites

Website defacements were supposed to be temporary. 2600 Magazine saved enough of them that the temporary damage became an archive.

The surviving index is organized by month and year, with 1999 broken into February through December and a short run of entries from January 2000. Anything before February 1999 points into an older archive.

The January 2000 list alone includes captured incidents involving the Library of Congress, the Colombian government, the University of Limerick, id Software, and other targets.

Each entry is dated and labeled with the affected site.

That simple structure makes the page useful now in a way it probably was not intended to be when it was assembled.

At the time, a defacement was news, embarrassment, bragging rights, vandalism, political speech, or some mixture of those depending on who was involved. Years later, the archive is closer to a primary-source collection of how attackers presented themselves when they took over a public web page.

Security history is ugly by nature

A polished history of the Web tends to remember browsers, companies, standards, and successful products.

The defacement archive remembers something else: weak servers, compromised accounts, crude HTML, handles, slogans, arguments, jokes, ideological messages, and the visual language people used when they wanted everyone to know they had gotten inside.

The page itself is old enough to carry a 1995–2002 copyright notice and the navigation of an earlier 2600 site, complete with sections for Off The Hook, pay phones, meetings, HOPE, older features, and the magazine.

That framing matters. This is not a modern cybersecurity museum built after the fact. It is part of the same culture that was documenting these incidents while they were happening.

The archive does not need to endorse the intrusions to make them worth preserving. Temporary Web events are some of the easiest historical material to lose because the original administrator’s entire job was to erase the evidence from public view as quickly as possible.

2600 kept copies.

Ancient Web: DigiCamHistory Stops in 1998 on Purpose

DigiCamHistory.com has a cutoff date, and the cutoff is the point.

The site says it was established on September 5, 2001 and describes itself as a nonprofit educational museum covering the history from film cameras into digital photography and space-imaging hardware.

Most of its core camera coverage stops around 1998.

The author explains why: by then digital photography was taking off fast enough that mainstream review sites had begun documenting new cameras routinely. What was in danger of disappearing was the awkward earlier period — experimental products, obscure brands, still-video cameras, strange storage formats, prototypes, and early digital systems that did not fit neatly into the later consumer-camera story.

So the site concentrates on the years before digital photography became normal.

The prehistory is the interesting part

The museum marks technological firsts, identifies cameras represented in its physical collection, and branches into topics such as storage media, American contributions to digital imaging, early electronic cameras, and space-exploration imagers.

The site also incorporates material from imaging engineer James R. Janesick, whose work connects digital-camera history to spacecraft imaging. A current update notes imagers associated with NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, which launched in October 2024.

That mixture is useful because digital photography did not begin with somebody putting an SD card into a compact camera.

It grew out of television imaging, CCD development, scientific instrumentation, military and space work, electronic still-video experiments, storage problems, computer interfaces, and manufacturers trying to figure out what consumers would tolerate.

The pages look exactly like a specialist site that accumulated over decades because that is what they are. There are long chronological indexes, blue ribbons for firsts, yellow markers for collection pieces, links into individual camera entries, and enough side trails to lose an afternoon without noticing.

This is not a polished museum tour.

It is closer to a workbench with labels on everything.

Ancient Web: Paper CD Case Still Generates Printable Disc Sleeves

PaperCDCase.com solves a problem that used to happen constantly: you have a loose CD, no jewel case, and access to a printer.

The site generates a PDF that can be printed, folded, and turned into a paper sleeve for a compact disc. You can enter an artist, title, and track list, choose Letter or A4 paper, and print the result. An advanced form adds mailing addresses and simple graphics, while the site can also generate jewel-case inserts.

It still works.

That alone makes it interesting, because the technical notes read like a preserved machine room from another era of the Web.

The site’s about page says it was created by Eric Cronin, David Helder, and Tony Kurc in association with MESH, a University of Michigan student group focused on software and hardware projects. Copyright notices begin in 2001.

The original stack included FreeBSD 4, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and a Perl CGI script using PDFLib to create the PDFs. Its CD database came from the FreeDB project. The modern homepage notes that search is now powered by Discogs.

The support page is almost an exhibit by itself

The troubleshooting instructions still discuss Acrobat Reader browser integration, Internet Explorer 6 security settings, ActiveX controls, Adobe Asian Font Packs, and an option to force the generated PDF to download instead of trying to display inside the browser.

There are even postage recommendations for mailing a CD inside the folded paper case.

This is what makes a surviving utility site better than a screenshot of one.

You can see not only what the tool did, but what environment it expected around itself: browser plugins, downloadable PDFs, mix CDs, FreeDB metadata, university hobby groups, and users mailing physical discs to one another.

The press list is equally period-specific. Paper CD Case was mentioned by Yahoo Internet Life in 2001, Playboy’s “Living Online” column in 2002, Computeractive, Internetworld, the Sydney Morning Herald, and other publications.

A tiny utility for folding paper around plastic got real press because it was genuinely useful.

Ancient Web: 75 Years of Band-Aid Started With a Garage Full of Old Boxes

Somebody moved into an old Northern California house, found roughly two dozen old Band-Aid boxes in the garage, and did the most correct possible 1995 thing with them: made a web page.

The page explains that the house had belonged to a family that apparently hated throwing useful containers away. Nails, washers, bolts, and other small hardware had been stored in Band-Aid boxes dating back to roughly the 1950s.

Instead of tossing the boxes, the site’s author photographed them and put them online.

That small decision turned into a surprisingly good piece of consumer-history preservation.

The page notes that it quietly reached its tenth birthday around February 2005, putting its origin around 1995. In 1996, after the page had been online about a year, a Johnson & Johnson manufacturing manager found it and sent historical details about Band-Aid production, including the North Brunswick, New Jersey plant and the brand’s earlier manufacturing history.

Then readers started adding to it

The collection did not stay limited to the boxes from the garage.

Readers submitted additional packaging, a 1946 family photograph showing a Band-Aid being applied to a child, and material connected to Doctor Dan The Bandage Man, an old Little Golden Book sold with Band-Aids.

In 2008, a relative of Josephine Knight Dickson — the wife of Band-Aid inventor Earle Dickson — even wrote in to object gently to the standard story that her clumsiness had inspired the invention. The page preserves that correction too.

There are also two old black-and-white television commercials, slogans from historical packaging, and photographs of boxes with prices in the 47-to-59-cent range. The author points out something easy to miss until it is stated directly: the older boxes do not have UPC symbols.

This is exactly the kind of history the early personal Web was good at collecting.

Nobody needed to establish the International Museum of Adhesive Bandage Packaging. Somebody found a weird pile of old boxes, cared enough to scan them, and left the page online long enough for other people to add context.

Ancient Web: Netiquette Put the Rules of Cyberspace on a Web Page

The Internet needed etiquette rules early enough that Virginia Shea published an entire book about them in 1994, and a large piece of that book ended up living online as a practical manual for people entering cyberspace.

Netiquette was published by Albion Books in 1994. Contemporary bibliographic records list chapters on email, electronic style, flaming, information retrieval, business use, home use, privacy, copyright, and the future of network etiquette.

The online material became especially known for the Core Rules of Netiquette.

Several of them sound almost quaint until you spend ten minutes on a modern social network.

Remember the human. Make yourself look good online. Share expert knowledge. Help keep flame wars under control. Respect other people’s privacy. Do not abuse your power. Be forgiving of other people’s mistakes.

The machinery changed more than the problems did.

A manual for becoming a person on the network

What makes the old Netiquette material interesting is that it comes from a period when ordinary users were still learning the social mechanics of networked communication almost from scratch.

Email was not just another inbox. Discussion groups had their own norms. Quoting, signatures, forwarding, privacy, flaming, and the strange loss of tone in plain text all needed explanation.

The online introduction describes one of the central problems cleanly: people can forget that the characters on the screen represent actual human beings.

That sounds obvious now because three decades of Internet culture have repeated it constantly.

Apparently repetition was not the same thing as solving it.

The surviving copies and references around the Web also show how the material itself traveled. Excerpts were posted to discussion groups in 1994. Colleges adapted the rules for students. The University of Pennsylvania’s Online Books Page later cataloged an online revised edition hosted at Albion.

This is exactly the kind of document that becomes more interesting after its original technical context ages out.

The advice was written around email, Usenet-style discussion, mailing lists, and early Web culture. The names of the systems changed. The social failure modes remain recognizable enough to be annoying.

Ancient Web: Dopefish.com Tracks One Dumb Green Fish Through Decades of Games

Dopefish began as one enemy in Commander Keen IV and somehow acquired a better historical record than many entire game studios.

Joe Siegler’s site calls itself the definitive history of the character, and for once that does not feel like marketing inflation.

The page traces Dopefish back to Tom Hall’s character sketches for Commander Keen: Goodbye, Galaxy! in 1990. The green fish appeared in the 1991 game and was described there as the second-dumbest creature in the universe, operating on the thought pattern “swim swim hungry, swim swim hungry.”

That should have been the full career.

It was not.

Dopefish became an inside joke among developers connected to Apogee, id Software, and the wider shareware-game world. Siegler documents cameos, references, hidden messages, planned appearances, save files, patches, screenshots, sound clips, artwork, and arguments over whether particular green fish should legally count as Dopefish.

Dopefish lives

The page follows appearances through games including Wacky Wheels, Rise of the Triad, Quake, and Quake II, along with references connected to Duke Nukem 3D and other titles.

Some appearances were official jokes. Some were fan-made. Some were rejected ideas whose files survived anyway.

The site is unusually valuable because it separates those cases instead of collapsing everything into mythology.

Siegler records who programmed particular cameos, where to find them, what commands or save files expose them, and when a supposed Dopefish reference probably was not intended as one. A revision-history page shows the site moving to dopefish.com in August 1997 and continuing to accumulate additions for years.

There are also artifacts that would be easy to lose in a modern summary: animated files, old download links, a rejected Rise of the Triad level, screenshots of secret areas, an original Tom Hall sketch, and notes from developers who were actually there.

The result is a tiny example of how game-development folklore survives.

Not through a formal museum project.

Through one guy refusing to stop documenting a stupid green fish.

Ancient Web: Computer Stupidities Preserved the Help Desk Horror Story

Computer Stupidities is what happens when thousands of tiny help-desk disasters are given somewhere permanent to live.

RinkWorks still lists Computer Stupidities among its main humor features, and references to the collection are easy to find going back to the late 1990s and early 2000s. Slashdot users were linking individual stories in 1999. Forum posts from the next several years repeatedly describe losing hours inside the archive.

The premise is simple: collect anecdotes about people misunderstanding computers in ways that are frustrating, absurd, or both.

The stories include tech-support calls, hardware confusion, software-installation failures, printers being asked to do things printers were never consulted about, and the recurring discovery that a computer cannot compensate for every misunderstanding surrounding it.

Some entries are firsthand. Some came from friends or submissions. Some are acknowledged as urban legends or stories whose exact origin is impossible to prove.

That uncertainty is part of the archive’s old-Web character rather than something the site tries to hide.

A record of computer literacy being invented in public

The jokes are funny, but the collection also preserves something useful: what ordinary computer confusion looked like when personal computers were spreading faster than the culture around them could standardize.

People had to learn what a modem was, what a drive was, which part of the computer was the computer, why software did not come with the hardware required to run it, and why removing a floppy disk before inserting the next one was not an optional interpretation of the instructions.

A lot of the humor comes from mismatched mental models.

That is more interesting than simply laughing at users.

Modern interfaces hide more machinery, installation is different, removable media is uncommon, and many support problems have migrated from “where is the floppy drive?” to accounts, permissions, subscriptions, browsers, networks, and devices that are technically computers but carefully avoid admitting it.

Computer Stupidities catches an earlier phase while it was happening.

The archive also demonstrates one of the old Web’s strongest habits: somebody encountered the same kind of ridiculous story often enough that they built a permanent category system for it.

Ancient Web: Netscape’s 1994 Welcome Page Still Explains What a Hyperlink Is

One of the best things about a surviving 1994 browser homepage is that it has to explain how to use the Web.

The page comes from Mosaic Communications Corporation, the company that would soon become Netscape Communications. Its copyright line says 1994, and the navigation is built around the assumption that many visitors are encountering this environment for the first time.

So it explains hyperlinks.

Not conceptually. Practically. The page tells users that blue or purple words and phrases are links and that a single click will take them somewhere else.

That sentence is almost impossible to imagine on a modern browser homepage because the behavior became invisible through familiarity.

In 1994, somebody had to say it.

The browser homepage was also the manual

The page offers a Guided Tour of the Internet, a Netscape Handbook, an Internet White Pages directory, product information, and instructions for people interested in creating their own Web services.

This is a browser company treating the Web itself as something that still needs onboarding.

The structure is useful history because it shows what the designers believed a new user needed to know. Not only how to operate the software, but where to go, what kinds of information existed online, and how somebody could add a new service to the network.

The company name provides another timestamp.

Mosaic Communications was founded in 1994 by Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen, with several people from the NCSA Mosaic project joining the new company. Later that year the company changed its name to Netscape Communications after a trademark dispute over the Mosaic name.

That leaves this page in a narrow little window where the company that would become one of the defining names of the browser wars was still introducing itself under the earlier name.

The preserved page is also remarkably small by modern standards. There is no giant hero video, account wall, cookie obstacle course, or JavaScript application required to explain the product.

It is mostly text, links, and a few images.

And it still explains what the thing does.

Ancient Web: Sidetalking Turned the N-Gage Into a Global Photo Joke

The original Nokia N-Gage made phone calls with the handset held sideways against your head, and the Internet responded in the only reasonable way: hundreds of people started pretending to make calls with random objects held sideways against their heads.

Sidetalking became a photo site built around the awkward shape of Nokia’s 2003 game-phone hybrid. The surviving original gallery advertises more than 250 pictures and immediately demonstrates how quickly the joke escaped the hardware that created it.

People sidetalk with game consoles, bread, laptops, toys, electronics, and objects that become less defensible the longer you scroll.

The captions are written in an all-caps, typo-heavy, overexcited voice that would be a terrible branding decision if it were not exactly the correct language for this particular website.

The whole thing feels like somebody screaming through a modem.

Then Nokia fixed the problem

The site’s later update reacts to the N-Gage QD, a revised model that moved the earpiece arrangement and removed the original sidetalking requirement.

This was objectively a usability improvement.

Sidetalking treated it as a tragedy.

The site mourned the loss of the feature, announced a final giant photo update, and eventually restored the earlier gallery for what it calls the archival web. That means the surviving site now preserves both the joke and its own reaction to the product change that threatened the joke’s reason to exist.

There is something very early-2000s about the entire mechanism.

One questionable hardware decision becomes a visual gag. A website gives the gag a home. People email in photographs. The editor captions them. The page grows. No centralized meme platform is required because the website itself is the gathering point.

The format also rewards participation without flattening everything into a feed. Every submitted picture joins the same ridiculous collection.

Ancient Web: BackRub Still Shows Google Before Google

Before Google was Google, it was BackRub, a Stanford research project with a crawler, a pile of scavenged hardware, and a name that probably would not have survived a marketing meeting.

BackRub grew out of work by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford in the mid-1990s. The central idea was to use the Web’s link structure as information about importance instead of relying only on the words appearing inside a page.

That sounds ordinary now because the idea helped reshape search.

The old project page is interesting because it shows the system while it was still a research machine rather than a corporation.

Its rough statistics from August 29, 1996 reported about 75.23 million indexable HTML URLs and roughly 207 gigabytes of downloaded content. The page says BackRub was written in Java and Python and ran across Sun Ultra and Intel Pentium machines using Linux. The primary database sat on a Sun Ultra II with 28 GB of disk.

Twenty-eight gigabytes.

There are phones now that would consider that an insult.

Search while the Web was still small enough to describe

The page also credits Scott Hassan and Alan Steremberg for implementation help and Sergey Brin for major involvement. Larry Page signs the note at the bottom.

That kind of detail is why surviving project pages matter.

Modern company histories usually compress the origin story into a clean sequence: two graduate students, a clever ranking method, a garage, Google.

The BackRub page is messier and better. It talks about URLs attempted, pages not yet attempted, robots exclusions, socket errors, programming languages, hardware, and disk capacity. It reads like a system somebody was actively trying to keep running.

The National Science Foundation’s history of the project describes BackRub as a prototype built from Stanford’s Digital Library work. Page and Brin used links to construct a ranking method that developed into PageRank, and by 1998 the project had moved toward the company that became Google.
