Ancient Web: HDTV Primer Modeled TV Antennas Instead of Trusting the Box

Antenna packaging has always had one technical weakness: the marketing department gets to print numbers on it.

HDTV Primer took the problem in a different direction. Rather than trusting manufacturer gain claims, the site’s author modeled a long list of commercially available TV antennas and published graphs showing how their performance changed across channels.

The page dates to October 2009 and reads like somebody got annoyed enough with antenna advertising to build the comparison they wanted to see.

Raw gain, net gain, and the part the box leaves out

The models were produced with NEC-4/EZNEC4-style antenna simulation software. The site explains why modeling can be useful: physical measurements are affected by surroundings, while a simulation can compare antennas in controlled free-space conditions.

More importantly, the page distinguishes between raw gain and net gain.

Raw gain describes how much energy the antenna captures in a direction. Net gain accounts for power lost because the antenna and transmission line are not perfectly impedance matched.

That difference produces some wonderfully inconvenient graphs.

The site compares indoor loops, log-periodic designs, Yagis, four-bay and eight-bay arrays, old Channel Master antennas, Winegard models, Antennas Direct products, VHF/UHF combination antennas, and rabbit ears. Several discontinued models remain in the charts, which has made the page more useful with age rather than less.

There are also practical discussions of beam width, side nulls, VHF performance from nominally UHF antennas, and why some published gain figures should be treated cautiously.

This is old-web technical culture at its best: not a product roundup, not affiliate links, and not a single “best antenna” answer.

It is somebody showing the curves.

Ancient Web: The Test Card Gallery Remembers When Television Had to Show Its Work

Before television channels filled every unused second with programming, shopping, trailers, or somebody shouting about politics, they sometimes showed the machinery.

Darren Meldrum’s site collects the tuning signals, test cards, clocks, captions, and other engineering images used by broadcasters when there was no normal program on the air.

These pictures were not decorative placeholders.

They were tools.

A picture designed to reveal what was wrong with your picture

Test patterns gave engineers and television repairers a stable visual target for checking geometry, aspect ratio, focus, convergence, grayscale, color response, resolution, alignment, and other parts of the broadcast chain.

The famous BBC cards are only one branch of the subject. The gallery also reaches into ITV material and test images from other countries and systems.

Some patterns are mostly circles, lines, gratings, blocks, and frequency wedges. Others became cultural objects in their own right because viewers saw them for years during off-air hours and trade transmissions.

Contemporary web references show the gallery was already being passed around online by 2000 as a place to find old BBC and international test patterns. That detail matters because the site is now preserving two histories at once: the broadcast engineering material itself and an early-web community that thought these technical screens were worth collecting.

They were right.

A test card captures the assumptions of a television system in one image. What resolution mattered? What shape should the picture be? How should circles appear? What tones and colors needed checking? What did a broadcaster expect a technician to diagnose from the screen?

Ancient Web: Phil’s Old Radios Has Been Online Since 1995

Phil’s Old Radios says it launched in 1995, which means the website itself is now old enough to qualify for the sort of careful restoration work it documents.

Philip I. Nelson built the site around antique radios, televisions, and the work required to bring old sets back to life. It includes a large gallery, restoration articles, beginner material, book and magazine recommendations, parts sources, and special features about radio collecting.

The useful part is that the site does not merely show polished pictures of finished hardware.

It explains the work.

Repair knowledge that survives with the machines

Old electronics are a problem for preservation because keeping the physical object is only half the job. Capacitors fail. Insulation deteriorates. Tubes become harder to source. Previous owners make repairs ranging from clever to criminal.

A restoration article captures decisions that a photograph cannot.

That gives Phil’s Old Radios value beyond nostalgia. Somebody approaching an unfamiliar set can learn what to inspect, where to find parts, and what other collectors have already discovered. The beginner section even covers basics such as finding, pricing, testing, and repairing vintage sets.

The website is also a useful example for modern webmasters. Its information architecture is obvious from the front page: Gallery, Beginners, Information, Restoration, Features, Building, Sitemap, Contact, About, News.

No archaeological excavation of the navigation is required before beginning the archaeological excavation of the radios.

The homepage identifies the site as one of the earliest websites devoted to antique radios and TVs and carries a copyright range beginning in 1995. Three decades later, the basic purpose has not changed much. It exists to document a subject and help people who care about it.

That kind of continuity is part of what Ancient Web is looking for.
