Before restaurant reviews became a giant platform feature, some people simply built their own review sites.
PhDelicious is wonderfully specific about the experience.
Individual restaurant pages record the date of a visit, photographs of the food, a letter grade, changes in that grade, and short explanations of what worked or did not. A review of the Enchanted Cafe in Barberton, Ohio, for example, documents breakfast and lunch visits, comments on the hash, toast, potatoes, atmosphere, and people, and then visibly changes the restaurant’s score from its original grade.
That is not anonymous crowd wisdom.
It is one person’s running notebook made public.
Reviews before the platform standardized them
Modern review systems reduce experience to familiar fields: stars, price, category, location, maybe a photo carousel.
A hand-built review site does not have to obey that schema.
PhDelicious can decide that the score needs an arrow showing which direction it moved. It can explain the reason in a sentence. It can spend space on an odd parking lot, a particular breakfast order, or a joke that would never survive a standardized review form.
Those quirks are the value.
They preserve not only restaurants but the personality of the reviewer and the small local details surrounding a visit.
For Internet archaeology, restaurant pages can also become accidental historical records. Businesses close. Menus change. Neighborhoods change. Owners retire. A casual page that once existed only to tell friends whether breakfast was good can become evidence that the place existed at all.

PhDelicious was not trying to document an era.
It was trying to say whether the potatoes were crispy enough.
Years later, that is exactly why the pages are interesting.
