Ancient Web: AirmenDK Mapped Allied Air Losses Over Denmark

AirmenDK is what happens when somebody refuses to let wartime losses collapse into a list of names.

Built by Anders Baadsgaard Straarup, the bilingual Danish-English site documents Allied aircraft and airmen shot down over Denmark or Danish waters from 1939 through 1945. It connects aircraft records to crews, missions, graves, monuments, locations and photographs.

The front page was still being updated in September 2026.

That matters because this is not merely a preserved old website. It is a long-running research project using old-Web structure because that structure still works.

Visitors can search a MySQL database, browse aircraft and mission tables, inspect cemetery and monument lists, use clickable maps and follow pages devoted to individual crews, crashes and operations. The site also links its records outward to organizations such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, American Battle Monuments Commission and related aviation archives.

Geography makes the records human

A bomber loss is very different when it stops being “aircraft X failed to return” and becomes a place.

AirmenDK repeatedly anchors records to coordinates, graves, memorial stones and towns. That makes it useful to family researchers, aviation historians and people who physically visit crash sites or cemeteries.

The site also preserves smaller contextual material that large databases often flatten away: memorial ceremonies, local investigations, photographs of headstones, aircraft-type tables and pages about specific missions.

Its design is unmistakably from an earlier web culture. The homepage is dense, bilingual and unapologetically link-heavy. Instructions explain how certain map links behave on tablets and phones. Tables coexist with external mapping tools and manually organized subject links.

It is not elegant in the modern product-design sense.

It is extremely legible in the archival sense.

You can see where the information lives.

The project also shows why specialist personal archives remain useful even when major institutions digitize their collections. Institutional databases are excellent at standardized records. A dedicated researcher can spend years connecting those records to local monuments, photographs, anecdotes and geography.

AirmenDK does exactly that.

The result is less like a webpage and more like a map pinned with hundreds of individual wartime stories.

Ancient Web: Lundsten’s Basement Preserved Danish Railway Signaling

Carsten Lundsten’s “Basement” contains the kind of technical documentation that becomes more valuable precisely because the equipment outside the browser is changing.

The personal site combines railway signaling references, railfanning photographs and model-railroad material. Its strongest historical section is Danish Railway Signaling around the turn of the Millenium, a collection Lundsten says was originally written around that period and intentionally preserves that timeframe even as corrections and maintenance continue.

The signaling documents were produced by Carsten S. Lundsten and Henrik W. Karlsson, with help credited to Ole E. Mogensen and Bjarne Mølgaard. Individual pages carry dates reaching back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, while some have received later updates through the 2020s.

That combination is ideal for a historical technical reference: the snapshot remains old, but obvious errors do not have to remain old with it.

A signaling system explained piece by piece

The archive covers basic definitions, signs and markers, speed boards, distant signals, station entry and exit signals, dwarf signals, automatic block signaling, semaphore signals, route and speed indicators, turnouts, vehicle signals and complete signaling examples.

This is not railway photography with a few captions attached. It is an attempt to explain what the hardware means and how the pieces relate to one another.

The site’s framing has become more significant with time. Lundsten notes that European Rail Traffic Management System deployment will remove much traditional lineside signaling. A page written to explain contemporary infrastructure therefore becomes a reference to infrastructure that is disappearing.

The wider site reinforces the personal-Web character. Lundsten documents railfanning trips through California, Arizona and New Mexico in 2002, West Virginia and Pennsylvania in 2003, Colorado and New Mexico in 2004, parts of the Gulf Coast the same year, Germany and Belgium in 2005, and England in later years. Model railroad pages sit nearby.

A modern publisher might split all of that into separate brands.

A personal homepage just calls it the basement and puts the shelves where they fit.

For researchers and rail enthusiasts, the important SEO value is in the exact technical language: dwarf signals, automatic block signaling, speed boards, route indicators and Danish station-entry practices.
