There is a point where obsolete-business support quietly becomes archaeology. Farum Data crossed it by dealing with the awkward physical problem most preservation projects eventually discover: the files still exist, but the machine that knows how to read them does not.

Farum Data & Dokumentation appeared in Danish business directories around the turn of the millennium as a small IT-services company. A 1999 Usenet post from Nico de Jong casually pointed readers to the site with the line that it showed “what we earn our bread with.”
What they earned that bread with included data conversion.
Years later, de Jong described having done media-conversion work professionally, especially from magnetic media. His technical posts mention systems assembled specifically to handle odd storage hardware, including old floppy-drive arrangements and an Irwin Rhomat setup that could require operating systems as far apart as Windows 2000 and DOS 3.x.
That is not glamorous preservation work.
It is the useful kind.
Somebody has to own the weird drive
Old data rarely disappears because the bits suddenly become philosophically unavailable. It disappears because the last working drive is in somebody’s garage, the controller needs an obsolete bus, the software expects a dead operating system, and nobody remembers the cable pinout.
Farum Data’s surviving Web trail shows the practical side of dealing with that problem.
De Jong also had a deeper connection to old hardware. He had worked for Philips Data Systems in Copenhagen in the early 1980s, including work around the P800 family. Decades later, he was collecting P800 and PTS documentation, reviving systems such as a P857-based machine, gathering parts for related hardware, and even writing software tools such as a simulator and assembler.
The old commercial site therefore sits at an interesting intersection.
It began as a business presence for data and documentation work. Over time, the person behind it became part of the community trying to reconstruct the machines that created and read yesterday’s data in the first place.
That is the full preservation loop: recover the medium, understand the hardware, document the process, and leave enough evidence that somebody else can repeat it.
CacheRat’s 1,967 Ancient Web Domains research list contains many old technical businesses whose value now has almost nothing to do with their original marketing copy.
The interesting part is what their surviving pages and discussions reveal about forgotten infrastructure.
Farum Data reminds us that digital preservation eventually becomes very physical.
At some point, somebody still has to make the damn disk spin.
