Ancient Web: Ceder.net Turned Square Dancing Into a Giant Searchable Database

If you wanted proof that the old Web could become absurdly comprehensive without becoming corporate, Ceder.net is waiting with twenty-three thousand square-dance music records.

The Square Dance Resource Net is still operating.

Vic and Debbie Ceder built the site into a maze of specialized resources: definitions, choreography, callers and cuers, clubs, events, music, lyrics, old calls, frequency counts, flash cards, rotation tools, short sequences, experimental material, software, and enough related utilities to make a newcomer realize that square dancing has approximately twelve thousand more moving parts than expected.

The dates buried inside the individual databases make the site especially interesting. The Callers and Cuers project says it began in October 1999. The Events database started in January 2000. The Music project began in February 2000. The Clubs database followed in 2002. These were not later social-media imports dressed up with retro styling. They are Web databases from the period when PHP and MySQL were becoming the obvious answer to “what if this hobby needs its own information system?”

And apparently square dancing really did.

The music database alone currently describes more than 23,000 records across hundreds of labels, with tens of thousands of sound clips, thousands of cue sheets, and thousands of lyric entries. Many clips were digitized from the site’s own vinyl collection, so the database openly warns that hiss, pops, and clicks are part of the source material.

Other areas preserve old call lists stretching back into the 1990s, searchable definitions at multiple dance levels, event records, caller information, and choreography. The site is still actively maintained, but it carries its older structures forward rather than hiding everything behind a redesign every three years.

That continuity is the interesting part.

A commercial platform would probably split this into profiles, recommendation feeds, paid creator tools, event discovery, music licensing, and six mobile apps. Ceder.net behaves more like a gigantic workbench. You arrive because you need a thing. The thing has a page. Usually there are seventeen adjacent things you did not know existed.

This is what independent specialist infrastructure looks like when a community keeps feeding it for decades.

Explore Ceder.net long enough and you will eventually encounter a database you did not know humanity needed. Ancient Web: Louis Kessler Has Been Keeping His Personal Website Since 1997

A personal homepage becomes something different when the owner keeps maintaining it for nearly thirty years. Eventually the “What’s New” page stops being a changelog and turns into archaeology.

Louis Kessler’s homepage is still online.

Kessler says his official site went live in January 1997, after a trial version appeared in August 1996. The first version already looked like the personal Web in miniature: genealogy, family research, cemetery photography, computer chess, software projects, Jewish history, and pages built with his daughters around cartoons they liked.

More interesting than the surviving homepage is the giant running history attached to it.

The site records old redesigns, traffic counts, awards, search-engine rankings, projects that moved to their own domains, pages that vanished, family sections removed when children grew up, and technologies abandoned after becoming annoying. In April 1999, for example, Kessler notes that he dismantled a Microsoft FrontPage Web and converted it back to a standard text-based site because FrontPage had become too difficult to control.

That sentence alone could be carved above the entrance to a museum of 1990s webmaster trauma.

The numbers also show what a successful personal reference site could become before “creator” was a job title. By the end of 1999, Kessler recorded more than 490,000 page hits. By 2007, the site had passed 3.6 million. His genealogy software links became one of the site’s major draws, eventually getting thousands of monthly visits and leading to a separate review project.

The old update log preserves little Web-era details that normally disappear: joining Web rings, adding JavaScript quizzes, receiving site awards, spam-proofing email addresses, checking rankings across Google, Yahoo, AlltheWeb and MSN, and discovering that a useful page could somehow be popular while still ranking badly because its title used the wrong phrase.

That is not just nostalgia. It is a long first-person record of how an ordinary independent website changed as the Web around it professionalized.

Kessler never needed to freeze the site in 1997 to preserve that history. He simply kept the history attached while moving forward.

Ancient Web: The Thalion Webshrine Rescued an Unreleased English Ambermoon

Thalion Software died in 1994. Its Web afterlife turned out to be much longer than the company itself.

The Thalion Webshrine still survives on the Exotica network.

Thalion was a German developer and publisher formed in 1988 by people with roots in the Atari ST demoscene. Its catalog covered action games, racers, simulations, and RPGs, but the studio never became a commercial giant. By 1994 it was gone.

A few years later, fan Alex Holland began assembling a site dedicated to the company and its games. In a later recollection, Holland said he had met an ex-Thalion developer while working at Argonaut in 1997. That encounter pushed him to collect every scrap of Thalion material he could find and build a website by hand in a text editor on an Amiga.

Then preservation stopped being theoretical.

Thalion’s RPG Ambermoon had shipped commercially in German on the Amiga, but an English translation had been developed and never released before the company collapsed. While Holland was contacting former Thalion people, the rumor of a completed English version kept surfacing. In 1998, Thalion co-founder Erik Simon sent him what Holland described as the only existing disk set of the English beta.

The Webshrine put it back into circulation.

That is an unusually pure example of what fan sites accomplished before game preservation became a recognized discipline. The page was not waiting for a museum, publisher reissue, official anniversary campaign, or preservation foundation. A fan contacted the people who made the games, gathered surviving files and documentation, and put the material where other people could find it.

Contemporary Usenet posts show the site already serving that role around 2000. Players looking for Thalion titles were pointed directly to the Webshrine, and Holland himself posted updated addresses as hosting changed. Years later, the archive still gets cited when researchers discuss cancelled ports, development history, and the English Ambermoon beta.

The preservation chain even continued beyond the original site. Former Thalion developer Jurie Horneman later recovered old Amberstar and Ambermoon source material from backups, with members of the surviving Thalion community helping convert and preserve it.

So this is more than a fan page about a dead company. It became part of the reason pieces of that company still exist.

Ancient Web: Mario Kart 64 Shortcuts Were Once Traded by Email

Before speedrunning had polished leaderboards, video proof standards, Discord servers, and frame-by-frame analysis, Mario Kart 64 players were already tearing courses apart and passing discoveries around by email.

David Wonn’s comprehensive Mario Kart 64 shortcuts page is still online.

The page reads like field notes from the first generation of serious glitch hunters. Each shortcut has instructions, an inventor when one is known, an approximate discovery date, and often a story explaining how the trick moved through the community.

The dates are the best part. Many discoveries cluster in 1997, essentially right on top of the game’s North American release. Luigi Raceway wall jumps, Kalimari Desert lap tricks, Toad’s Turnpike warps, Frappe Snowland lap skips, Choco Mountain wall jumps, and Wario Stadium abuse were being tested while most players were still learning the tracks normally.

Wonn did not merely collect the final tricks. He kept provenance.

For Luigi Raceway, he credits Jeos Oreamuno and explains how he reconstructed the trick after receiving a description by email. For Toad’s Turnpike, Wonn records the reveal date as March 12, 1997 and links to his original email describing the discovery. Other entries distinguish between tricks he found independently, shortcuts posted first on N64HQ, rumors that had not yet been reproduced, and techniques discovered by several people around the same time.

That is primitive but recognizable speedrunning methodology: establish the claim, reproduce it, separate rumor from confirmed technique, preserve who found what, and argue about whether the resulting time should count.

The page even has a dedicated rumors section. A supposed shortcut could live there while people experimented. If it turned out to be repeatable, it graduated into the legitimate list. If it failed long enough, it disappeared.

No database schema was required. HTML and reputation did the job.

Wonn’s page also preserves a social layer modern gaming databases often flatten away. He remembers local tournaments, Nintendo Power coverage, secret techniques held back for years, arguments over credit, and the excitement of discovering that Lakitu’s rescue logic could be weaponized against the course itself.

This is why an old strategy page can matter after every shortcut has been rediscovered on video. The modern clip shows how. The old page remembers when people first realized it was possible.

Ancient Web: Admiral Furashita Built an Entire Japanese Navy That Never Existed

Some hobby websites preserve history. Others preserve the alternate history somebody spent decades inventing because the real fleets were apparently not complicated enough.

The page is a catalog of fictional Imperial Japanese Navy vessels created by Craig Burke for his Victory Through Seapower World War II wargaming universe. They did not exist, and the site makes that clear immediately. What makes the collection wonderful is how seriously the joke is documented after that.

There are battleships, battlecruisers, carriers, aircraft cruisers, monitors, seaplane carriers, submarines, and designs that sound just plausible enough to make an incautious reader wonder whether Imperial Japan really considered building them. Each entry can include displacement, armament, aircraft capacity, speed, line drawings, operational reasoning, and the kind of development history normally reserved for actual naval vessels.

Burke’s pen name is part of the gag. “Admiral U. Furashita” is a phonetic joke built around what people tended to say about his imaginary ships. He explains that he had been hooked on Pacific naval warfare since childhood, after reading his father’s copy of Eugene Burns’s Then There Was One. His father had served aboard USS Enterprise as a junior radar officer during early Pacific operations.

From there, decades of naval reading and wargaming turned into a fleet that existed nowhere except paper, counters, imagination, and eventually HTML.

That last step is what makes the page interesting to CacheRat. The old Web gave deeply committed hobbyists a place to publish material that was too specific for magazines and too strange for conventional reference books. There was no requirement that a subject have a mass audience. If five hundred people on Earth wanted detailed specifications for a fictional Japanese catamaran aircraft carrier, somebody could simply build the page.

And because the site is still there, the surrounding hobby culture survived with it.

The fleet also carries a useful warning for modern browsing: not every authoritative-looking table on the Web describes a real object. Here the fiction is labeled and the joke is intentional. Twenty-five years of copying information out of context can make that distinction surprisingly important.

Go browse Furashita’s impossible fleet and enjoy a Web page built by somebody who clearly knew enough real naval history to make fake naval history properly. Ancient Web: A 2000 Pokémon Page Explained the Seizure Incident With Actual Neuroscience

In March 2000, a university neuroscience site looked at one of the strangest collisions between television, animation, and medicine: the 1997 Pokémon broadcast that sent hundreds of children in Japan to hospitals.

The original “Pokémon on the Brain” page is still online.

The page was part of Eric Chudler’s Neuroscience for Kids project at the University of Washington. Instead of treating the event as urban legend or cartoon trivia, it used the incident as a compact lesson in photosensitive seizures and how the visual system responds to flashing light.

The broadcast was Pokémon episode 38. During one sequence, red and blue light flashed rapidly on screen. The page reports that 685 children were taken to hospitals by ambulance after viewers experienced symptoms including blurred vision, dizziness, nausea, headaches, seizures, and loss of consciousness. More than 150 were admitted.

The page then does what good educational websites used to do extremely well: it slows down and explains the mechanism.

It describes photosensitive seizures, discusses the relationship between flicker frequency and visual response, and summarizes experiments comparing ordinary visual responses with those of people sensitive to flashing light. It also records broadcasting guidelines adopted after the incident, including limits on the rate and duration of flashing imagery.

More importantly, the page cites the research. References at the bottom include papers in Epilepsia, Nature Neuroscience, and Acta Paediatrica Japonica. That matters because the Pokémon incident spent years mutating through playground stories, sensational television reports, and retellings that gradually lost the distinction between what happened and why.

This little 2000 HTML page preserved the useful version.

It is also a snapshot of how science outreach looked before every educational topic had to become a video channel, newsletter funnel, interactive app, and social account. The page has small graphics, plain headings, references, a few jokes, and enough explanation to send a curious kid somewhere deeper.

In 2026, that feels almost luxurious.

The surviving PokĂ©mon neuroscience page is worth reading as both science communication and Web history. Ancient Web: Beastie’s Official Home Explains Why the BSD Daemon Is Not Chuck

The BSD daemon is one of those computer mascots that escaped the operating system and became part of hacker culture. His official home still looks appropriately like something maintained by people who care more about provenance than redesigns.

The first thing the page clears up is the name. The daemon is not officially named Chuck. Marshall Kirk McKusick says that name came from an advertising myth associated with Walnut Creek. If you insist on calling the character something, the site suggests “beastie,” a play on the letters BSD.

From there the site becomes a surprisingly detailed history of Unix culture expressed through drawings, book covers, T-shirts, conference swag, legal permissions, and inside jokes.

The black-and-white 4.2BSD daemon appeared on the 4.2BSD manuals published by USENIX. Years later, a group at Kansas State University decided they wanted a UNIX shirt. They scanned the old artwork, edited it on a Sun workstation, printed copies, and sat around with colored pencils until they found a color scheme they liked. The initial run was only about forty shirts.

The 4.3BSD daemon has another famous connection: the artwork used on The Design and Implementation of the 4.3BSD UNIX Operating System was drawn by John Lasseter, long before his name became universally associated with Pixar.

The site also preserves the stranger administrative side of mascot history. McKusick has a page explaining how the daemon artwork may be used, why permissions matter, and why he became serious about protecting the figure after nearly losing control of it to a company. There are galleries covering FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, USENIX, “!DOS,” Lego versions, cakes, shirts, and other mutations of the character.

This is where an old personal website can beat a modern summary page. It does not merely tell you that Beastie exists. It preserves who made which version, what it appeared on, why particular shirts were printed, and how the image moved through actual Unix communities.

The page is basically oral history with HTML around it.

You can still wander through the BSD daemon archive and follow the individual designs into their stories. Ancient Web: The Nuclear Weapon Archive Started as a 1994 University Site

Some old websites survived because nobody touched them. The Nuclear Weapon Archive survived because people kept having to move the whole thing somewhere else.

The Nuclear Weapon Archive is still online.

Its own history page traces the project back to November 1994, when Gary Au, then a student at Melbourne University in Australia, founded the High Energy Weapons Archive. That puts the site’s ancestry inside the first commercial-browser era of the Web, when a serious reference project could still begin as a directory on a university machine and become internationally known before anyone had settled on what a “web publication” was supposed to look like.

The archive did not enjoy a quiet childhood. Traffic surged around the fiftieth anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japan in 1995, drawing enough attention that Melbourne University shut the site down under its computing-use rules. Au later took a job with the Australian Department of Defence and handed administration to Carey Sublette in January 1996. From there the material bounced among hosts in Finland, Italy, and the United States, including the Federation of American Scientists and Enviroweb.

That history explains one of the site’s most important design decisions. In 2003 it finally acquired nuclearweaponarchive.org, specifically to stop years of host changes from breaking every incoming link. The old High Energy Weapons Archive name also became The Nuclear Weapon Archive.

What survives is enormous. There are historical sections on the Manhattan Project, Trinity, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nuclear test programs, national arsenals, weapon-development history, reference material, photographs, timelines, and a long FAQ. The site also records its own update history instead of pretending it appeared fully formed yesterday. Entries jump from the early 2000s through later maintenance work, including updates in 2020 and 2023.

The important thing in 2026 is not that every page is visually ancient. It is that this is an example of a serious specialist reference site carrying its institutional memory with it. Modern sites are often rebuilt until their own history disappears. This one tells you who started it, who inherited it, why it moved, why the domain exists, and what each phase was trying to preserve.

That makes the archive itself part of the historical record, separate from the difficult subject matter it documents.

Ancient Web: The Pace Taught Motorcyclists Not to Race the Street

One of the more useful things the old Web did was quietly rescue magazine articles from the month they were supposed to disappear.

Nick Ienatsch’s The Pace first appeared in Motorcyclist in November 1991. Copies and mirrors spread through motorcycle club pages, personal sites, mailing-list resources, and forum stickies because the essay addressed a problem riders kept having long after the issue left the newsstand.

How do you ride a capable motorcycle quickly on a public road without turning the road into a racetrack?

Ienatsch’s answer was to remove the parts that make street riding look and feel like competition.

No drag-race launches down the straights. No last-second braking contests. No passing your friends to prove a point. Set corner speed early, look through the turn, keep a margin for things you cannot see, and treat the rider ahead as somebody you are traveling with rather than somebody you need to defeat.

The essay calls that approach The Pace.

The important word is not speed. It is control.

Ienatsch developed the idea while working at Motorcyclist in the 1980s and riding with experienced racers who still needed to survive Sunday morning and report to work afterward. The street contains gravel, driveways, police, animals, blind corners, bad pavement, trucks over the centerline, and people who have never heard of your beautifully chosen apex.

A racetrack is engineered around performance.

A public road is merely willing to let you pass through.

That distinction helped the article endure. Later versions and “The Pace 2.0” refined the advice as motorcycle and tire technology improved, but the cultural core stayed recognizable: leave competition at the track and build the group ride around smoothness, judgment, visibility, and margin.

The Web mattered to that survival.

Before every magazine had a searchable archive, enthusiast sites recopied the reference material their communities considered too useful to lose. Some of those copies became easier to find than the publication that originally printed the piece. Riders linked newcomers to them for years.

That is a form of preservation, even when nobody called it that.

Ancient Web: Australian Valve Amps Is Part Repair Bench, Part History Book

Australian Valve Amps opens with a warning that old amplifiers contain voltages capable of killing you, then immediately proceeds to become one of the friendliest rabbit holes on the subject.

The site has been online since July 2004 and concentrates on Australian and New Zealand valve amplifiers for guitar, bass, accordion, keyboards, harp, and public-address use from roughly the 1930s through the 1970s.

That focus matters because local amplifier history is easy to flatten into the familiar American and British brands.

Here the names are different.

Goldentone. Strauss. Maton. AWA. STC. Challenge. Concord. Amplivox. Small makers, obscure models, mystery chassis, catalog scans, service information, circuit diagrams, photographs, and contributions from people who still have the things sitting in sheds and workshops.

The site’s own description is better than any attempt to make it respectable: circuits, pictures, data, history, observations, oddities, tips, tricks, traps, and links — “From the Great to the Ghastly, from the Gory to the Gold.”

It is also aggressively independent in the old-Web sense.

The pages advertise no products. There are no cookies, popups, frames, or Java. The site calls itself plain hand-coded HTML and openly mocks “physics-free speaker cables” and magical capacitor thinking. A restoration page may sit beside a joke, a technical note, a mystery amplifier, or a warning that touching 600 volts is an extremely efficient occupational-health lesson.

Under the humor is serious repair knowledge.

There are sections on mains wiring, grounding, hum, heaters, common circuit practices, amplifier technicians, component safety, and do-it-yourself designs. The archive is useful precisely because it does not pretend every old circuit is automatically good or safe.

That distinction becomes more valuable as the hardware ages.

A forty- or sixty-year-old amplifier is not just a collectible object. It is a high-voltage machine containing parts that drift, dry out, leak, fail, and occasionally retain enough charge to make nostalgia medically inconvenient.
