Somebody looked at a geometric fortress on a map, decided star-shaped forts were extremely cool, and then spent years trying to catalog them around the world. This is an entirely acceptable reason for a website to exist.

The site explains the basic problem that produced the star fort. Medieval walls worked badly once artillery became powerful enough to batter them and attackers could hide near the base of rounded fortifications. Bastions projecting from the walls let defenders cover approaches with overlapping fire and reduce those protected “dead zones.”

The result was military architecture that looks almost decorative from above: triangles, diamonds, ravelins, ditches, covered ways, and increasingly elaborate geometry wrapped around cities.

The list is the fun part

Starforts.com began with the ambition of listing every star fort in the world. The author eventually admits that this is probably impossible because there are simply too many of them, including forts that were destroyed, buried under cities, radically altered, or only survive as traces in modern street plans.

That failure is more interesting than a finished checklist.

Individual pages combine maps, satellite views, photographs, historical notes, construction dates, sieges, modifications, and the author’s running commentary. The tone is not museum-wall formal. The site is openly enthusiastic about pointy fortifications and happily uses the word “starfortesque.”

There is real historical value underneath the enthusiasm. The archive documents how one engineering response to artillery spread across Europe and into colonial fortification, then evolved again as artillery improved and the classic bastioned system became obsolete.

Ancient Web: Mike’s Digital Clocks Are What Happens When Timekeeping Gets Out of Hand

A clock needs to tell you the time. Mike Harrison’s clock page demonstrates how quickly that requirement can deteriorate into 200-volt Nixie supplies, giant electroluminescent digits, custom PCBs, reed switches, and a display bright enough to light the room at night.

The page is part of Mike’s Electric Stuff, and it reads like a notebook from decades of electronic tinkering. The oldest clock shown dates to around 1982 and uses ordinary red LEDs with an MM5387 clock chip. From there things get progressively less reasonable.

There is a huge Nixie clock built with East German Z568M tubes, a Burroughs B7971 alphanumeric display, a tiny Nixie car clock built from three stacked PCBs, light-guide filament displays, a 4.5-inch electroluminescent clock, dot-matrix clocks, and commercial countdown displays.

The construction notes are the archive

The value is not just photographs of glowing numbers. Mike documents the actual engineering decisions.

One clock uses a PIC16C84 with cascaded 74HC595 shift registers and high-voltage driver transistors. Another uses 200-volt AC for electroluminescent strips. The tiny car clock has a switch-mode supply generating roughly 200 volts for miniature Nixie tubes. Time-setting buttons are sometimes replaced with magnetic reed switches because visible switches would spoil the case.

There are also wonderfully specific historical details. A giant countdown display was built for the UK iPhone launch. Another Nixie display was made for a Channel 4 television production. One early PCB was etched using a drip tray from Mike’s mother’s refrigerator.

That is the sort of sentence no content strategy meeting ever produces.

Ancient Web: Wendy Carlos Built an Official Site That Feels Like an Actual Person

Most official musician websites eventually become storefronts wearing an artist’s name. Wendy Carlos’ site feels like somebody actually lives there.

Carlos is inseparable from the history of electronic music: Switched-On Bach, synthesizer performance, alternate tunings, and film work including A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and TRON. Her website does more than list those credits.

The discography pages contain long notes about remastering, master tapes, unreleased recordings, album variants, synthesis, sound quality, distribution problems, and the strange afterlife of recordings that move in and out of print.

One of the best examples is the story of the TRON master tapes. Carlos describes old tape binder absorbing moisture until the reels became difficult or impossible to play. The solution involved carefully dehydrating the tapes long enough to transfer them. That is music history crossing directly into media preservation.

A “Living Page” from another web

The site calls itself the “Living Page.” Its design is dense with custom leaf icons, color-coded sections, long explanatory pages, personal opinions, warnings about unauthorized releases, technical notes, and occasional irritation with the music business.

There is even a MetaPage describing the site’s own design and the Macintosh computers used to maintain it.

That makes the site historically interesting beyond Carlos’ music. It represents an era when an official artist website could be idiosyncratic, hand-shaped, argumentative, and full of information that would now be flattened into social posts or marketing copy.

Ancient Web: Crypto Museum Is an Entire Spy Museum Hiding in a Browser

Crypto Museum has the structure of an old specialist website and the inventory of a small intelligence museum. Click around long enough and you are suddenly reading wiring notes for obscure encryption equipment that probably spent most of its working life behind locked doors.

Based in the Netherlands, Crypto Museum describes itself as a virtual museum backed by a real physical collection. Its purpose is preservation: historical cipher machines, Enigma equipment, spy radios, burst encoders, intercept receivers, covert devices, bugs, recording gear, codebreaking machines, telephones, telex hardware, radar, and the organizations and manufacturers behind them.

The index is enormous.

Individual equipment pages often combine photographs, technical descriptions, history, internal views, manuals, circuit information, accessories, variants, and references. A visitor can move from a famous Enigma machine into Cold War radio gear, concealed transmitters, telephone security devices, or a manufacturer that vanished decades ago.

It still behaves like a working collection

This is not an abandoned museum site preserved in amber. New items and rewritten pages were still appearing in 2026. The curators acquire equipment, restore it, identify unknown devices, add manuals, run events, and correct older material.

They also explicitly state that the site contains no cookies or trackers. That is almost aggressively on-brand for a cryptography museum.

The archive is especially useful because hardware preservation without documentation only gets you halfway there. A cipher machine behind glass tells you what it looked like. Ancient Web: Don’s Depot Turned a 1946 Railroad Photo Hobby Into a Web Archive

R. Donald Ross started collecting railroad photographs in 1946. More than fifty years later he got a scanner, discovered the web, and turned the hobby into Don’s Depot.

Ross explains the transition himself. He had been exchanging and collecting railroad photographs for decades through railfan networks. In 1998, after buying a scanner, he began emailing scanned pictures to other enthusiasts. Tom Chandler suggested that putting them on web pages would be easier than burying everybody’s inbox.

The pages kept growing.

The result is the kind of collection that makes the old web valuable: thousands of photographs arranged largely by railroad company, with contributions from other collectors and an open invitation for visitors to send corrections and additional information.

A hobby older than the website by half a century

That timeline matters.

This was not a website created because “railroad content” looked like a promising niche. The website is merely the latest container for a project that began when Harry Truman was president.

The archive includes locomotives and rolling stock, but it also branches into regional railroads, private passenger cars, private freight cars, ships, boats, tugs, fire engines, and buses. Older pages show their age. Navigation is utilitarian. Thumbnail images open larger scans. The purpose is straightforward: identify the equipment and share the pictures.

Music historian and collector Vernon Fitch began the archive in the mid-1970s as a centralized collection of Pink Floyd material. The website opened in February 1996, which means the web presence itself is now part of the history it documents.

The collection covers records, singles, CDs, cassettes, videos, posters, tour programs, backstage passes, promotional material, books, magazines, photographs, autographs, radio releases, and more.

The detail becomes the point

The strongest sections are the discographies.

Different countries, formats, labels, pressings, box sets, promotional issues, military releases, and radio-only material are separated and documented individually. Entries can include catalog numbers, barcodes, release dates, pressing plants, matrix information, packaging descriptions, inserts, mastering details, and track peak levels.

This is collector knowledge made searchable.

It also solves a real research problem. Once an artist has been releasing music internationally for decades, “the CD version” is not one object. Click germanium and there are crystals, ore, diodes, supplements, and a boule. Zirconium leads to crucibles, flash bulbs, abrasives, and other objects.

Theodore Gray’s own collection alone is indexed at more than a thousand items.

Chemistry gets physical again

That matters because chemistry education can become abstract very quickly. “Palladium” is a box on a chart until you see it in a catalytic converter. “Phosphorus” is a symbol until the collection confronts you with actual industrial, mineral, historical, and sometimes unsettling uses.

The site also includes rotating 360-degree views for many specimens and more detailed descriptions than Gray could fit into his book The Elements. In fact, he describes the book as growing out of the photographs he had already been collecting on the website.

Created by Emil Krén and Daniel Marx, the site began with Renaissance art and expanded outward in both directions. Medieval roots were added. Then Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, decorative arts, architecture, Early Christian work, Pre-Romanesque material, and eventually 19th-century art up to the beginning of World War I.

The collection now contains more than 52,000 reproductions.

Built for browsing before feeds took over

The Web Gallery of Art is not just a pile of JPEGs.

There is an artist index, searchable database, biographies, commentaries, guided tours, period music, catalogs, and a mobile interface that was added years after the original site. The scope is deliberately bounded: European fine arts, decorative arts, and architecture from roughly the 3rd through 19th centuries.
