SpaceWeather.com looks like somebody kept adding useful boxes to a 1990s science homepage for nearly thirty years and never saw a compelling reason to stop.
The domain dates to 1997, and the site’s current newsletter describes SpaceWeather.com as operating since 1998. Its archive can be searched day by day back through the early 2000s.
The homepage still works like a dashboard built for people who actually want numbers.
Solar-wind speed and density. X-ray flare classes. Sunspot counts. Kp index. Interplanetary magnetic field. Coronal holes. auroral oval. Radio flux. Near-Earth asteroids. Fireball observations.
Then, underneath all that instrumentation, Dr. Tony Phillips writes the day’s stories.
A daily science site that never became a content brand
The combination is unusual now.
SpaceWeather.com is simultaneously a live data board, a news site, an observing guide, a photo hub, and a long-running archive. It pulls together data from sources such as NOAA and NASA but keeps the editorial voice personal.
The site currently makes a point of calling itself an “AI Free Zone” and says Phillips writes the material himself. Whatever one thinks of that declaration, it fits the place. SpaceWeather has always read like a scientist maintaining a very large personal weather station for the solar system.
The long archive gives it another value.
A major geomagnetic storm is not just a news event here. Years later, a reader can move backward through daily pages and see what was known, what was forecast, what the instruments showed, and how the event was described at the time.
That is a different kind of record than a retrospective encyclopedia entry.
The visual density also makes sense once you understand the audience. If you came to check whether an aurora might be visible tonight, a giant minimalist redesign would actually make the site worse. The ugly little tables are doing work.

SpaceWeather.com has been taking the pulse of the sky long enough that the old readings have become part of the story.
