Ancient Web: Oceans of Kansas Turns a Plesiosaur Field Trip Into a Fossil Notebook

Oceans of Kansas has a page where a good day in the field begins with half a plesiosaur limb bone sticking out of shale.

Mike Everhart’s page documents fossil collecting in the Kiowa Shale of Kansas, a Lower Cretaceous marine formation deposited during the advance of the Western Interior Sea.

It is part field diary, part specimen catalog, and part literature review.

That mixture is exactly what makes it useful.

The moment the rock stops being just rock

Everhart describes climbing a gully in June 2011 and spotting the broken end of a plesiosaur propodial on the surface. Farther uphill, the rest of the bone was still projecting from the shale. The loose piece fit.

A few steps later came vertebrae.

The page records specimen numbers such as FHSM VP-17708, VP-17710, and VP-17711, identifies the anatomical elements, discusses the stratigraphic context, and compares them with older finds from Kansas collections.

It also reaches backward.

The page includes material collected in the 1890s, historical identifications that were later revised, museum specimens whose status changed, and references to published work on the Kiowa Formation and its marine reptiles.

That makes the page more than a “look what I found” post.

It preserves the chain between field discovery, museum cataloging, interpretation, and revision.

The web was unusually good at this kind of specialist notebook. A researcher could publish photographs that would never justify a journal article, annotate them heavily, link related specimens, and keep the technical references right beside the story of finding the bone.

No editor had to decide whether the audience was large enough.

The audience only had to care.

Oceans of Kansas is one of them.

The fossil is interesting.
