Andreas Freise’s site treats that material like a real collection instead of disposable message-board decoration.

The main dictionary is alphabetized by subject. That sounds ordinary until you open an index and find entries for T-rex, Tamagotchi, Taj Mahal, telescopes, TIE fighters, trains, typewriters, Unix, vampires, VMS, volcanoes, Windows, windmills, wrestling, and dozens of other things represented entirely with fixed-width text.

The collection credits many different artists rather than pretending ASCII art appeared from nowhere.

Art that survives copy and paste

ASCII art was unusually well suited to the early networked world.

It could pass through terminals, email, Usenet, BBS systems, plain-text files, source comments, and primitive web pages without requiring an image format. If the spacing survived, the picture survived.

Freise’s site documents that culture from several angles. There is the subject dictionary, a gallery of his own work, artist profiles, animation examples, tutorials, tools, FAQs, and information about copyright and attribution.

The result is useful for more than nostalgia. It preserves names and authorship around an art form that was constantly copied, edited, forwarded, stripped of signatures, and reposted.

Some websites survive because nobody touches them. Molecule of the Month survived by continuing to publish.

The project has added a new molecule every month since January 1996, making it one of the longest-running chemistry websites on the internet.

Its original idea was simple: pick an interesting chemical substance and explain why anybody should care about it. Over the years that has produced pages on medicines, explosives, pigments, gases, biological molecules, industrial chemicals, oddball compounds and substances with names that sound like somebody lost a bet in a laboratory.

The web technology is part of the archive

The chemistry is only half the story.

Molecule of the Month also preserves several generations of scientific web publishing. Pages have appeared as plain HTML, PDF, VRML, Chime-enhanced pages, Jmol applets and later JSmol using JavaScript and HTML5.

That means the site quietly documents the browser’s changing relationship with interactive scientific content.

VRML once let visitors move through molecular models. Chime required a browser plug-in. Java applets became common. Then browsers stopped trusting half the things they once happily executed, and JavaScript took over the job.

The Old Robots site is a sprawling collector archive covering educational robots, personal robots, toy robots and robot-adjacent machines from roughly the 1940s through the early 2000s.

The site map alone reads like a catalog from a parallel history of consumer robotics: Heathkit HERO, HERO Jr., HERO 2000, RB5X, Androbot, Hubot, Omnibot, Verbot, Armatron, Compurobot, Alphie, 2-XL, i-Cybie, Pleo, Robosapien-era machines and dozens upon dozens of stranger devices.

There are also repair pages, battery information, controllers, boxes, manuals, posters and photographs from the owner’s collection.

When household robots were mostly personality

The most interesting thing about these machines is how often they were sold as a social idea before the technology could support the fantasy.

A plastic robot might roll forward, speak canned phrases, carry a tray, respond to a controller or accept simple programming. Marketing did the rest. The machine was a butler, companion, tutor or mechanical friend because the box said so and because people wanted the future badly enough to meet it halfway.

The Old Robots site preserves that gap between expectation and capability.

It also preserves practical information that gets scarce as hardware ages. Repair photographs and battery notes can become more valuable than a glossy collector description when somebody actually owns a dead Omnibot or Armatron.

Ancient Web: Old Organizers Preserves the Pocket Computers Before Smartphones

Before a phone became a camera, map, calendar, terminal, music player and pocket bureaucracy machine, there was an entire species of dedicated electronic organizer.

The site describes itself as a collection of monochrome electronic organizers, text PDAs and graphic PDAs—the older brothers of today’s handheld devices. At the time of inspection it listed 364 organizers.

That number matters because these machines were easy to forget individually. A Sharp or Casio organizer might have held appointments, contacts, memos, passwords, expenses, calculator functions or simple databases, then disappeared into a drawer when a newer device arrived.

Old Organizers treats them as a hardware lineage instead of obsolete clutter.

A category that vanished into the smartphone

The collection can be browsed by physical form and capability: devices with covers, without covers, credit-card formats, text PDAs and graphic PDAs. It can also be searched by brand.

The site invites owners to contribute missing devices, corrections, comments and user manuals. That turns a private collection into a collaborative reference. The object itself is useful, but so are the details around it: model names, interface layouts, manuals, photographs and the little design experiments manufacturers tried while figuring out what a pocket computer should be.

A lot of beginner woodworking advice quietly turns into a shopping list. Woodgears.ca takes the opposite approach: buy a few tools, make something ugly, and let actual work tell you what you need next.

The page starts with hand tools, clamps, a work surface, a drill and a jigsaw. From there it moves through circular saws, planes, table saws, drill presses, bandsaws, routers, planers and other shop equipment in roughly the order they become useful.

The important part is not the list. It is the attitude behind it.

The author repeatedly argues against buying expensive equipment before experience creates a reason for it. Cheap tools are acceptable. Used tools are acceptable. A contractor saw from decades ago is acceptable. The difference between a cheap drill press and no drill press, the page notes, is often more important than the difference between a cheap one and a premium one.

A technical page that has opinions

This is also why Woodgears feels different from modern affiliate-heavy tool content.

The page dislikes some fashionable purchases. Compound sliding miter saws are treated skeptically. Multi-function machines get a warning. A pre-built workbench is questioned because building the bench is itself a good beginner project. Track saws, cordless tools, nail guns and scroll saws all get contextual treatment instead of automatic recommendations.

That makes the article useful even years later. Brand names and prices change. The decision-making process does not.

Ancient Web: Somebody Cataloged Every Descent Robot Like a Field Guide

Descent already had a memorable enemy roster. Insectoid’s old DOS-game site decided that was not enough and cataloged the robots as though somebody might need to identify one in the wild.

Each robot gets a miniature technical record: first level encountered, size in meters, weapon type, threat rating, point value, common drops and a short note about how badly it can ruin your day.

The Class 1 Drone is a low-threat nuisance. The Super Hulk is marked “Very Very High.” Boss #2 reaches the more scientifically rigorous category of “Insane.”

This is useful information.

A fan page with actual structure

The page is part of a much larger personal archive covering DOS games, Descent levels, weapons, Jazz Jackrabbit, XPilot and other material. A surviving change log shows years of redesigns, image recaptures, CSS rewrites and painstaking work on the Descent section.

In 2012, the robot images were improved and the author was still adapting old level pages. Earlier entries record the creation of walkthroughs for all 27 main levels and three secret levels, along with custom graphics and robot renders.

That long maintenance history is what makes the page interesting beyond nostalgia.

This was not a disposable “top 10 Descent enemies” article. It was a personally maintained reference system for a game somebody knew extremely well.

The guide even records unused material. The Split Pod, or Red Triangle, exists in the Descent engine but does not appear in the original First Strike campaign; fan-made levels could still use it.

A Tamagotchi is a tiny device built around routines: feed it, clean it, watch it grow, screw something up, remember the result. Ginjirotchi.ca turned those routines into a public record.

The site is part of the old Tamagotchi fan-web ecosystem: individual collectors documenting shells, characters, growth paths, care experiments and day-to-day runs long before every hobby was organized inside a social app.

Other Tamagotchi preservation sites still point people toward Ginjirotchi.ca specifically for its logs, photographs, journal entries and information on vintage models.

That personal documentation has become more valuable as the hardware ages.

Care logs are historical data

Virtual pets are easy to dismiss as toys, but old Tamagotchi models can be surprisingly opaque.

Behavior depends on feeding, discipline, mistakes, sleep schedules, age and model-specific rules. Fans learned by running the devices repeatedly and comparing results.

Ginjirotchi.ca belongs to that tradition.

The site’s owner, Dennis, is also visible in the broader Tamagotchi community. Other long-running collectors refer to group hatchings with him and to care methods he developed while trying to reach particular characters. A 2025 log on Mimitchi.com even mentions his experience with older Japanese Tamagotchis unexpectedly resetting.

Ancient Web: Frogland Put an Entire Frog Obsession on the Web

There was a period of the web when a completely reasonable response to liking frogs was to build an entire frog kingdom.

Frogland did exactly that.

Old descriptions of the site advertise frog and toad information, pet-care FAQs, frog jokes, art and photo galleries, stories, coloring pages, computer toys, games, trivia, and species material. Educational pages and teacher resources were linking students into Frogland by the early 2000s.

This was not a minimalist amphibian database.

It was a frog website.

Before every hobby needed a platform

The site is useful as a specimen of old personal-web design because the subject expands in every direction the author found entertaining.

There is factual information, but also play. A visitor could learn about tadpoles and red-eyed tree frogs, then wander into jokes or pictures instead of being pushed into another algorithmically selected article.

One surviving page explains how international visitors could feed Frogland’s URL into AltaVista’s Babel Fish translation service.

That instruction is now nearly archaeology by itself.

The site also ended up in school webquests, bibliographies, classroom newsletters, and amphibian resource lists. That is an underrated kind of contribution. A personal site could become educational infrastructure simply because a teacher searched for something useful and found a person who had already spent several years obsessing over it.

For modern webmasters, Frogland demonstrates something that SEO advice often accidentally destroys: a site can be useful because it has a recognizable personality.

Nobody had to wonder what Frogland was about. Nobody needed a content strategy document. Somebody liked frogs very much and the information architecture followed naturally.

Ancient Web: Steve’s Old Computer Museum

Steve’s Old Computer Museum has a wonderfully simple argument: early personal computers had personality. Then it puts roughly 150 of them on the screen and lets the hardware make the case.

The collection covers machines from the period when nobody had fully agreed what a personal computer should look like, how large it should be, what storage it should use or whether the keyboard belonged inside the same plastic shell as everything else.

That uncertainty made for much more interesting tables.

Before the shape was standardized

The museum pages combine photographs with original prices, release years and concise notes about individual systems. The lineup includes familiar names and machines that disappeared without becoming retro celebrities.

A Cambridge Z88 from 1987 sits next to pocket machines such as the Psion Organiser. Japanese systems, portable computers, odd keyboards, early laptops and desktop machines all end up in the same visual timeline.

The site also preserves old advertisements. Those are often as useful as the machines themselves because advertising tells you what manufacturers believed customers needed to hear at the time.

Read enough old computer ads and you can watch an industry invent its own vocabulary while trying to convince ordinary people they definitely needed several kilobytes of memory in the house.

The museum even provides a page showing about 150 systems together. It is hard to look at that wall of shapes and not notice how much hardware design converged later.

A useful small museum

This is not an institutional collection with a giant database interface. It feels like what it is: somebody’s personal effort to preserve and display machines they care about.

That makes it useful in a different way. The descriptions are brief, the navigation is direct, and the pages are easy to link to when a particular machine comes up in research.

For modern webmasters, the site also demonstrates an old rule that remains annoyingly effective: if every page has a clear subject, a good title, a photograph and specific facts, search engines and humans can usually figure out what it is without a content-strategy meeting.

Ancient Web: TEXTFILES.COM Kept the BBS World Readable

Before screenshots, social feeds and video ate most online conversation, an enormous amount of computer culture traveled as plain text. TEXTFILES.COM exists because Jason Scott kept copies.

Scott started the site in 1998 with a specific mission: make available the BBS text files he had collected during his youth. These were the files that moved through dial-up bulletin board systems — stories, FAQs, technical notes, jokes, phreaking lore, game material, rants, newsletters and the miscellaneous debris people create whenever storage gets cheap enough to waste creatively.

The project did not stay small.

Scott later described the broader TEXTFILES.COM family as holding more than a terabyte of computer history. Separate collections expanded into CD-ROMs, shareware and other material that did not fit neatly into the original BBS archive.

Copy the damn thing

One of the best parts of the project is its attitude toward preservation.

Scott has repeatedly encouraged mirroring and bulk copying. In a 2003 essay about archiving, he wrote about finding entire copies of TEXTFILES.COM circulating on peer-to-peer networks and being delighted rather than offended. The important part was that the files had escaped dependence on one server.

That idea aged extremely well.

A preservation project that can only survive while one domain, one company and one administrator remain healthy is not very preserved.

The site was deliberately structured so people could take copies without being married to its HTML presentation. Directory description files made the collection easier to move and rebuild elsewhere.

For webmasters, there is a serious lesson hiding underneath the mountain of BBS weirdness: exportability is a feature. Simple files, descriptive metadata and stable paths survive organizational changes better than content trapped inside an application nobody can run ten years later.

A collection became history

When TEXTFILES.COM began, much of the material was recent enough to be remembered as junk from dial-up systems. Keep junk long enough and suddenly researchers want it.

Scott went on to make BBS: The Documentary, work on other computer-history projects and become an archivist at the Internet Archive. The old text-file collection sits near the beginning of that path.

TEXTFILES.COM is still useful for the same reason an old shoebox of disks can be useful: nobody knew which apparently stupid file would become interesting later.
