Some websites survive because nobody touches them. Molecule of the Month survived by continuing to publish.
The project has added a new molecule every month since January 1996, making it one of the longest-running chemistry websites on the internet.
Its original idea was simple: pick an interesting chemical substance and explain why anybody should care about it. Over the years that has produced pages on medicines, explosives, pigments, gases, biological molecules, industrial chemicals, oddball compounds and substances with names that sound like somebody lost a bet in a laboratory.
The web technology is part of the archive
The chemistry is only half the story.
Molecule of the Month also preserves several generations of scientific web publishing. Pages have appeared as plain HTML, PDF, VRML, Chime-enhanced pages, Jmol applets and later JSmol using JavaScript and HTML5.
That means the site quietly documents the browser’s changing relationship with interactive scientific content.
VRML once let visitors move through molecular models. Chime required a browser plug-in. Java applets became common. Then browsers stopped trusting half the things they once happily executed, and JavaScript took over the job.
The archive adapted rather than being rebuilt from scratch every five years.
For chemistry students, the benefit is obvious: hundreds of approachable entry points into individual molecules. For internet historians, the project is a living demonstration of how university departments experimented with the early web as an educational medium.
It was not merely a brochure for a chemistry department. It was publishing designed specifically for a browser.
The project was important enough that its history was later documented in an academic paper about the site’s first twenty years. By 2026, it had already blown past that milestone and kept going.
