Ancient Web: Tap Lines Has Been Cataloging Southeastern Railroads Since 1996

Tap Lines is what happens when somebody keeps a railroad-history website alive long enough for the website itself to become part of the history. Donald R. Hensley Jr. has been putting Southeastern railroad material online since 1996, and the site still reads like a working research bench rather than a polished museum exhibit.

The scope is much wider than locomotive glamour shots. Tap Lines covers short lines, narrow gauge railroads, industrial railways, lumber operations, Florida and Georgia lines, builder histories, rosters, and obscure local systems that are easy to lose once the physical tracks disappear.

There is also a very old-Web feature that becomes more valuable with age: mystery photographs. Hensley posted unidentified railroad images and let readers help solve them. Several are now marked solved. That is crowdsourcing before the word became a business-plan adjective.

The research behind the site is substantial. Hensley says he has digitized Official Guides, equipment registers, Poor’s Manuals, ICC valuation material, employee and public timetables, maps, diagrams, locomotive-builder lists, and other records collected over the years. Some of those source runs go back into the nineteenth century. The page still advertises data CDs and DVDs, which is a wonderfully accurate fossil of the period when digitizing a large historical collection did not automatically mean putting it in cloud storage.

Tap Lines also preserves Hensley’s own photography and contributed work from other railroad researchers. The subject matter ranges from major systems to tiny industrial operations whose names would otherwise survive only in specialist books, local archives, or somebody’s filing cabinet.

The site matters because railroad history is intensely local. A national summary can tell you that a company existed. A page assembled by someone who has spent decades collecting photographs, rosters, maps, and obscure short-line documentation can tell you what actually ran through a particular town, quarry, mill, or phosphate operation.

For webmasters, Tap Lines is another argument for boring durability. A huge body of niche information, organized by hand and accumulated over decades, can remain useful without becoming a platform.

Ancient Web: Final Fantasy Dimension Still Looks Like a Fan Site From 1999

Final Fantasy Dimension does not merely contain old Final Fantasy material. It still presents itself like a fan site built when a 1024Ă—768 monitor was something worth designing around and a six-digit visitor counter was a landmark worth announcing.

The site centers heavily on Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII, with later additions for Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. Its front page is packed with graphics, character art, links, disclaimers, and the unmistakable visual density of a late-1990s game shrine. It proudly notes that more than 100,000 visitors reached the site and explicitly says it is optimized for a 1024Ă—768 screen.

One tiny line is especially useful for dating the artifact: the visitor counter was restarted on February 11, 1999. The domain itself came later, but the page carries its earlier history with it.

This was the era when a game fan did not merely post reactions. They built a place. Fan art had named creators. Image galleries carried stern warnings against stealing modified graphics. The webmaster identified himself as DFAT and carefully explained that the project had no affiliation with Square or Square Enix. The copyright disclaimer is almost a genre unto itself: a defensive wall of text built by somebody who clearly knew the site was using a lot of commercial game imagery and wanted everyone to understand that the love was unofficial.

That is part of why the site matters in 2026. Modern fandom tends to flow through a few enormous platforms. Final Fantasy Dimension reflects a different structure: one webmaster, one domain, one visual language, and enough enthusiasm to keep adding sections whenever Square released something worth obsessing over.

It is also useful as a research artifact because it preserves the texture of game fandom rather than only the facts. A wiki can tell you when Final Fantasy VII was released. It cannot reproduce what it felt like when somebody arranged an entire personal corner of the Web around Aeris artwork, Squall images, guestbook traffic, and a browser window expected to be exactly the right size.

Ancient Web: William Verts Built a Homepage That Refused to Need Modernization

William T. Verts has one of those university homepages that looks old because it never had a reason to become anything else. It is a personal index, teaching shelf, software cabinet, and bookmark collection built with the assumption that a Web page should mostly help you get somewhere.

Verts is a computer science professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and his site has been online since at least 1999. The design is the interesting part precisely because it barely tries to be design: ordinary HTML, simple navigation, a GIF image map, and long lists of links organized by subject.

That restraint was deliberate. Verts has written about abandoning visual page-building tools because correcting their generated HTML took more effort than writing the page directly. The result is a site that skipped several generations of Web fashion by never depending on them in the first place.

The useful material goes much deeper than the homepage. Old course pages survive. Technical explanations such as his notes on byte order have been cited elsewhere for years. His software section offers programs he wrote himself under extremely permissive terms: use them, copy them, give them away, just keep the related files together. Among the artifacts is exactly the sort of thing a late-1990s personal software page should contain: a utility for counting down the days until January 1, 2000.

The site also exposes something modern faculty pages tend to erase. This is not a polished institutional profile assembled from a database. It is Verts’s own collection of interests, classes, software, links, opinions, and accumulated references. The structure tells you something about the person because one person actually structured it.

For webmasters, that is the useful lesson. A page built around durable URLs, plain HTML, and comprehensible navigation can survive longer than entire generations of frameworks. It does not need a redesign every three years to remain legible.

Ancient Web: Peter Yost Put Music, Organs, Photography, and Calligraphy Under One Roof

Peter Yost’s homepage has six main destinations: home, sacred music, secular music, photography, pipe-organ building, calligraphy, and contact. That sounds almost aggressively normal until you compare it with how the modern Web expects one person to maintain a separate account, audience, algorithm, and posting strategy for every interest.

This is a personal site in the older sense of the phrase. The subject is not a brand category. The subject is Peter Yost, so whatever Peter is working on belongs there.

That turns out to cover a lot of ground. Yost has a background in classical singing and choir music, has composed and recorded music, worked with photography and video, studied engineering, and became involved in traditional pipe-organ building. A biography from organ builder Lubbert Gnodde’s workshop says Yost began apprenticing there in 2019, learning the different parts of tracker-organ construction, and later began organ lessons in 2020.

Pipe-organ building alone could support an entire specialist website. Traditional tracker organs combine woodworking, metal pipe making, wind systems, mechanical linkages, voicing, acoustics, architecture, restoration, and a fairly unforgiving relationship with physics. Yet on Yost’s site it sits beside calligraphy and photography because that is how actual people’s interests work.

The structure is worth noticing. There is no attempt to flatten those subjects into a single content niche. Sacred music does not need to justify its presence beside secular recordings. Calligraphy does not need to become “personal productivity.” Organ building does not need to become a ten-part creator series.

It is simply a collection of things one person does.

That is one of the strongest ideas the independent Web ever had, and one that giant platforms quietly trained people to abandon. A homepage can be a map of a person rather than a stream of whatever will perform best this week.

For researchers, these sites also create useful intersections. Someone looking for organ-building material may discover the music. Someone looking for a recording may find photographs. Someone following a name from another source can see the broader context around the work instead of landing on a skeletal professional biography.

The site is modest, but that is precisely why it belongs in this series. Not every worthwhile homepage needs to be a museum or a famous historical artifact. Sometimes the contribution is refusing to let a person’s work be chopped into six unrelated platform accounts.

Ancient Web: Georg Potthast Kept DOS Machines on the Network

Getting DOS onto a modern-ish network is the kind of problem that sounds simple until you are staring at an unidentified PCI network card and an operating system that predates most of the hardware in the machine. Georg Potthast’s SIOUX pages exist for exactly that unpleasant afternoon.

The site became known in DOS and FreeDOS circles for packet drivers: small pieces of software that let DOS networking programs talk to Ethernet hardware. Potthast collected drivers for PCI network adapters and provided tools for identifying what chipset a card actually used.

One of the important utilities is NICSCAN.EXE. FreeDOS documentation specifically points users to Potthast’s site for NICSCAN and explains the practical reasoning behind it: different retail network-card models often use the same underlying chipset, so hunting for a driver by the exact name printed on the box can be a waste of time. Identify the chipset first, then find the appropriate packet driver.

That is old-computer troubleshooting in one sentence.

The FreeDOS networking guides still reference SIOUX when explaining how to bring up Ethernet. A typical configuration loads a packet driver from AUTOEXEC.BAT, often using software interrupt 0x60, and then hands networking off to software such as mTCP, WatTCP-based applications, FTP clients, DHCP tools, or browsers.

Potthast’s pages are especially interesting because they sit at the boundary between two eras. DOS networking started in a world of ISA cards, dial-up connections, Novell stacks, and carefully assigned interrupts. The SIOUX material helped extend that world into PCI Ethernet and USB hardware that arrived much later.

In other words, the site is not merely preserving obsolete drivers. It documents the work required to make an obsolete operating system cooperate with hardware it was never designed to understand.

That has practical value in 2026. Retrocomputing increasingly involves real machines rather than emulators alone. Moving files, reaching an FTP server, connecting an old PC to a local network, or simply proving that a 486 can still speak TCP/IP often depends on exactly this kind of forgotten middleware.

Modern vendor support pages are usually useless here. The card manufacturer moved on twenty years ago. The operating system vendor is gone or irrelevant. The useful answer survives because one person collected the ugly little .COM files and wrote down how to use them.

That is the old Web doing technical support after everyone with a budget stopped caring.

Ancient Web: The Fred Project Built a Ventriloquist Dummy in Public

The Fred Project starts with a problem ventriloquists have had for a very long time: buy the same stock figure everybody else can buy, spend serious money on a custom maker, or build the thing yourself and accept responsibility for whatever comes out of the workshop.

The project describes building a professional ventriloquist figure using head and hand casting kits from figure maker Mike Brose and Puppets and Props. The figure was named Fred by Brose’s wife. From there the site walks through the kind of work a finished dummy normally hides: casting parts, materials, the head shell, jaw mechanics, eyes, hands, finishing, assembly, and the endless small decisions required to turn inert parts into a character that can sit on someone’s knee and appear disturbingly alive.

That level of documentation is why the page kept circulating. Puppet builders were still pointing people toward it in the mid-2000s, hobbyists rebuilding figures cited it years later, and even modern 3D-printing sellers continue recommending the Fred Project as a guide to the mechanics inside a ventriloquist figure.

The page is especially valuable because it documents a physical craft rather than merely talking about it. A lot of old Web material describes software or culture that can be copied perfectly. Fred exists at the opposite end of the spectrum. Brass rod has to fit. A jaw has to pivot. Eyes have to sit correctly. Paint, glue, filler, fabric, and hand tools eventually have to behave in the real world.

The Web was extraordinarily good at this kind of knowledge transfer. One person built something difficult, photographed the intermediate states, wrote down what worked, and left the pages online. You did not need a publisher to decide there was a large enough market for a book titled Here Is Exactly How I Built This Particular Ventriloquist Dummy.

The niche itself did the publishing.

For modern makers, the Fred Project also shows why step-by-step pages age better than short-form video. You can stop at the exact stage you need, compare the photograph with the object on your bench, reread the materials list, and continue without scrubbing through twelve minutes of introductory chatter.

There is a lot of Internet history hidden in pages like this: not famous websites, but durable instructions that quietly became part of a craft’s shared memory.

Ancient Web: TouringCarRacing.net Became a Citation Source for Racing History

Some fan sites become references because somebody keeps collecting the boring details everybody else skips. TouringCarRacing.net became one of those sites: a huge specialist database covering touring-car racing history from the 1950s into the early 1990s.

The site is associated with Dutch racing historian Frank de Jong, whose work is repeatedly cited by later motorsport databases, Wikipedia articles, sim-racing projects, and racing-history researchers. Sources using the site describe it as a massive database of touring-car events and results from roughly 1952 through 1993.

Its value is not one famous article. It is accumulation.

Championship tables, individual rounds, car specifications, driver combinations, lap times, photographs, and results were gathered across series that are much harder to reconstruct than Formula One. European Touring Car Championship seasons, British saloon and touring-car racing, Australian events, national championships, Group A years, and obscure one-off races all leave traces in the archive.

That depth is why the site escaped the usual fate of hobby pages. Researchers cite individual pages as sources. Sim-racing modders use its photographs and specifications to recreate historic cars and grids. Race-history pages point back to de Jong for championship tables and event results that are otherwise scattered across period magazines, programs, private collections, and memory.

The story also has a more human ending. Frank de Jong died in 2018. Later racing communities explicitly dedicated work to his memory and continued referring to TouringCarRacing.net as one of their best historical resources. Other sites now describe the database as being maintained as his legacy.

That changes what the domain represents. It is no longer simply a fan site that stayed online. It is the residue of years of one person’s specialist research, now woven into other people’s work.

This is exactly why little independent reference sites matter. A commercial publication may cover the famous championship or winning driver. A dedicated amateur historian is more likely to record who finished seventh at Zolder, what car they drove, who shared it, and whether the lap time agrees with a program from 1984.

Search engines are good at finding famous facts. They are much less useful when the question contains a year, an obscure race, a chassis, and three names nobody has searched this month.

Ancient Web: Mercenary’s Helper Thought the Other Star Fox 64 Sites Were Crap

The creator of Mercenary’s Helper looked around at the existing Star Fox 64 pages in 1997, concluded that most of them were “crap,” and decided to build a better one. That is about as pure a mission statement as the old fan Web ever produced.

The site says it was born August 19, 1997, only weeks after the North American release of Star Fox 64. It reads like a fan site built while the game was still new enough that strategies, secrets, high scores, voice clips, and community knowledge were being assembled in real time.

There are guides to fighting Star Wolf, level material, multiplayer information, miscellaneous help, fan fiction, polling results, and a high-score FAQ. The FAQ is not merely a list of cheats. It explains techniques for squeezing more points out of stages, exactly the sort of knowledge that once moved from player to player through FAQs, message boards, and personal sites before video walkthroughs became the default format.

The update log is part of the history. In December 1998, the webmaster finally fixed the fan-fiction button so it would stop producing a 404. On Christmas Day he uploaded 368 voice clips and improved the quality of many of them. In March 1999 he noted that a host failure had broken access to sounds and other files, so he changed the site to make them reachable again.

That kind of note is mundane until you realize what it records: the maintenance problems of a late-1990s fan site as they happened. Free hosting disappears. Links break. A teenager has a busy senior year. Somebody sends in an FAQ. Audio files get re-encoded. The site grows sideways because people contribute things.

The page still shows its period construction openly. Image-based navigation, tiny graphics, old advertising remnants, and hand-written update text remain in place. More importantly, the content still loads. A page created when the Nintendo 64 was current hardware can still tell you how to fight Star Wolf without asking you to accept cookies first.

Modern game databases are broader and more polished, but they rarely preserve the moment when a community was still discovering the game. Mercenary’s Helper does. Its tone, priorities, missing pages, corrections, and accumulated files are all part of the record.

The creator wanted to do better than the other Star Fox 64 sites. Nearly thirty years later, the fact that his version is still readable gives him a fairly strong closing argument.

Ancient Web: Michael Scharrer Kept the POV-Ray Source Code With the Art

A rendered image is nice. A rendered image plus the scene file that generated it is much more useful. Michael Scharrer’s POV-Ray collection keeps both, turning a gallery of strange computer graphics into a small archive of executable ideas.

The collection includes titles like Strange Crystal, Debris, Energy Pulse, Nuclear Containment, Tree of Squares, Liquid Fire, Woven Sines, Infinite Spring, Quarks, Fractal Supernova, Sphere Flake, and Caustics. They sound like filenames found on a graphics workstation somebody forgot to shut down in 1998, which is part of the charm.

The useful part is the documentation behind them. In Strange Crystal, for example, Scharrer explains that the central object is built from the union of 40 randomly rotated cubes. A chunk is removed and placed in front using constructive solid geometry. Multiple colored lights at slightly different locations fake wavelength-dependent caustics, while repeated refraction creates the crystalline glimmer.

Then the page links directly to the source code.

That is an old-school computing habit worth preserving. The image is not treated as the final object. The method is part of the work. Someone interested in POV-Ray, constructive solid geometry, procedural art, random seeds, light behavior, or simply how another person thought through the scene can inspect the machinery rather than reverse-engineering a screenshot.

Scharrer also makes the material available under a Creative Commons Attribution license. That reinforces the same idea: these are not only pictures to admire but building blocks somebody else can learn from and reuse.

POV-Ray itself comes from a style of graphics work that feels increasingly alien next to modern 3D suites. You describe a world in text—objects, materials, lights, transforms, mathematical relationships—and let the renderer turn the description into an image. There is a particular satisfaction in changing a few parameters and getting an entirely different universe back.

The website matches that philosophy. It is direct, searchable, and built around the artifacts. No infinite scroll. No account. No portfolio animation that makes you chase the actual image around the screen. Pick a scene, read how it works, take the source code if you want it.

For programmers interested in visual work, this is the kind of page that can still teach more than a gallery with ten thousand polished renders and no explanation whatsoever.

Ancient Web: DAN-BALL Kept Browser Games Alive for Twenty Years

DAN-BALL started on April 16, 2006. Twenty years later, it is still updating games. That alone puts it in a rare category of browser-game sites that did not simply survive the death of Flash, social platforms, app stores, and several generations of Web fashion. It kept shipping.

The site is managed by three people identified on its profile page: ha55ii, a game programmer; tylor, a web programmer; and otascube, an app game programmer. Their catalog is wonderfully difficult to summarize because the games often sound like experiments somebody accidentally made playable.

There is Powder Game, a falling-particle simulation where players can combine materials and build contraptions. Liquid Webtoy turns fluid simulation into a browser toy. Planet simulation plays with gravity. Compasses lets hundreds of little magnets interact. Earth Editor builds worlds from dots. 100bit is a shared drawing surface that can replay the history of how an image was made. There are also action RPGs, puzzle games, hamsters, rockets, pandas, mines, ray tracing, and enough stick figures to staff a very cheap war.

The update history is almost as valuable as the games themselves. It stretches back to the site’s launch date and records a constant stream of small releases: Rockets 1.0 on April 16, 2006; Compasses 1.0 that August; SAND MOJI 1.0 in September; Powder Game 1.0 in April 2007. The same log continues into 2026 with current versions of Stick Ranger 2 and mobile-app maintenance.

That continuity matters. Browser games are usually discussed as a dead era bounded by plugin technology. DAN-BALL shows another path: keep rebuilding, porting, maintaining, and letting the site remain the center of gravity instead of abandoning it for whatever distribution platform is fashionable this year.

The comments are still active too. People show up in 2026 talking about games they played as children, sharing creations, requesting ports, and celebrating the site’s twentieth anniversary. There is an actual community thread running from mid-2000s Web games into current browsers and phones.

The design has changed enough to keep working but not enough to erase its ancestry. There are still giant access counters, plain navigation, update logs, individual game pages, and a sense that the homepage is a directory rather than a marketing funnel.

For a webmaster, that may be the most interesting part. DAN-BALL did not need to become a giant platform. It just needed to remain a place people knew how to return to.
