Description
Before the red-and-blue domino logo, before thousands of stores, and before pizza could apparently be summoned from your phone like a carbohydrate spell, there was DomiNick’s.
In 1960, brothers Tom and James Monaghan purchased DomiNick’s, a small pizza shop in Ypsilanti, Michigan. James later traded his share of the business to Tom for a Volkswagen Beetle, and in 1965 Tom renamed the growing operation Domino’s Pizza. Domino’s own company history confirms the DomiNick’s purchase in 1960 and the 1965 name change.
This photograph captures that much earlier world: the DomiNick’s storefront, an old Volkswagen at the curb, winter streets, residential Ypsilanti in the background, and the kind of neighborhood pizza shop nobody looking at it then could reasonably have expected to become a global corporation.
The surviving image is small and black-and-white. This edition has been carefully restored, colorized, clarified, and enlarged while keeping the original composition intact.
