The page offers several tiny bitmap character sets created in GIMP: 6×6, 6×8, 6×10, 8×8 and 8×10 grids, plus a 14-segment design. Most of the fonts include ordinary ASCII characters, while several also add characters such as Å, å, Ä, ä, Ö, ö, Ü, ü and ß.
There is an important little implementation detail in the documentation. Although a font may be described as using a 6×8 grid, the visible glyph is actually one pixel narrower and shorter because the rightmost column and bottom row are left empty for spacing. That is the kind of information a useful technical page states plainly instead of making somebody reverse engineer the image later.
The fonts can be used or modified for commercial and noncommercial work with credit. The page also includes a Python image generator that reads the font images and turns text into rendered bitmap output.
Tiny constraints make the design visible
At normal display sizes, typefaces hide enormous amounts of design work in curves and spacing. At six or eight pixels high, every decision is exposed. An M, R, ampersand or lowercase g has only a handful of cells available, so legibility becomes a small logic puzzle.
The 14-segment font makes the constraint even more obvious. Its grid is 8×8, some characters are omitted, and certain glyphs necessarily become ambiguous because a segmented display simply cannot express everything cleanly.
Qalle’s wider Neocities site follows the same specialist, handmade impulse. Other pages cover RC2014 hardware, pinouts, logic gates, magic numbers, a fantasy CPU, NES Game Genie material and simple substitution ciphers. It is newer than many Ancient Web subjects, but it demonstrates the same reason the independent Web remains useful: a person can publish one unusually specific thing because they made it and thought somebody else might need it.
That makes it a natural fit beside the older material in CacheRat’s Ancient Web research list. The point is not merely age. It is preserving the kind of pages that expose real work, terminology and artifacts instead of flattening everything into a social post.
Six pixels across is not much room.
Apparently it is enough for a font and a whole little rabbit hole.
