Ancient Web: Hose Company No. 1 Put a 1908 Volunteer Firehouse Online

Hose Company No. 1’s website is the kind of local institutional page that becomes more valuable as the years pile up. It was not built as a museum. It was built because a volunteer fire company in East Rockaway, New York needed a website. In the process, it preserved a compact piece of neighborhood history that otherwise would be easy to miss.

A Fire Company Founded in 1908

The site’s history page says Hose Company No. 1 was organized on September 24, 1908 by firefighters who believed the north side of East Rockaway needed better fire protection. The company eventually purchased its property on Grant Avenue in 1921 for $900.

That is exactly the sort of detail old organizational websites are good at preserving. It is too small for most general histories and too specific to survive in search results unless somebody keeps the page online.

The site also records harder pieces of its past, including the death of member Robert F. Garrison in September 1918. Alongside that history are ordinary practical details: the firehouse address, telephone number, hall-rental information and photos.

Then there is the video page.

It offers firefighter-training videos and still carries the message that a Flash Player upgrade is required. That tiny technical artifact dates the design almost as effectively as a copyright notice. The browser ecosystem moved on, but the page stayed where it was.

The result is an accidental snapshot of how small civic organizations used the Web before every department moved its public face to a social network, a municipal CMS or a third-party event platform.

There is no elaborate archive interface here. No interactive timeline. No digital-humanities grant. It is just a volunteer fire company website with enough old HTML still standing to connect a present-day building to a group founded more than a century ago.

For anyone researching local history, volunteer firefighting or the ordinary institutional Web, that simplicity is the point.
