A 1981 magazine article about ammonia-based alien life is still sitting inside the website of a retired Ohio radio telescope.

The page comes from Cosmic Search, a magazine published from 1979 through 1982 and devoted to the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Big Ear’s North American AstroPhysical Observatory site now hosts an electronic edition of the complete run: thirteen issues across four volumes.
The specific page in CacheRat’s source list is Isaac Asimov’s “Not as We Know it: The Chemistry of Life,” from the Winter 1981 issue.
Asimov uses the article to ask what alien life might look like if the chemistry underneath it changed. Instead of assuming every organism requires the exact terrestrial combination of liquid water, nucleic acids and proteins, he examines alternative solvents and chemical environments. Liquid ammonia is one of the major examples.
The interesting part for the Ancient Web project is not merely that an Asimov essay exists online.
It is how it got there.
Thirteen printed issues became a volunteer-built Web archive
Big Ear’s introduction explains that physical copies of Cosmic Search eventually became difficult to supply. By 2004, the organization had exhausted its stock of complete sets.
Jerry Ehman volunteered to turn scans of the thirteen issues into electronic files. The conversion took a little over a year, and in September 2006 the North American AstroPhysical Observatory decided to publish the entire set on Big Ear’s website.
The resulting archive is wonderfully literal.
You can browse issue numbers, volumes, dates, page numbers, authors and titles. There are HTML versions for browser reading and document versions for people who want something closer to the original pages.
The contributor list reads like a snapshot of early SETI culture: Frank Drake, John Kraus, Philip Morrison, Ronald Bracewell and many others appear throughout the run.
That makes the archive useful in a way a modern summary of SETI history is not.
It shows what researchers and science writers were actually discussing while the field was still trying to define itself publicly.
The Web page also preserves the assumptions of its own preservation era. Frames are offered as one browsing method. HTML tables serve as the database. Navigation is built by people who expect you to read the archive rather than swipe past it.
That is exactly the kind of migration CacheRat keeps finding: print to scan, scan to HTML, institutional project to volunteer-maintained domain.
The radio telescope may be gone.
The magazine is still transmitting.
