Expired-domain networks repurposed for unsolicited promotion

A domain name can outlive the person, organization, or project that made it valuable.

That leftover value attracts buyers.

When a site disappears and its domain registration eventually expires, the address may still have inbound links, bookmarks, citations, search history, recognition, and old visitors who assume the name means what it used to mean.

A new owner can inherit the address without inheriting the mission.

Google’s current spam policies explicitly identify expired domain abuse as purchasing an expired domain and repurposing it primarily to manipulate search rankings with material that provides little or no value. Google’s examples include affiliate content on a domain formerly used by a government agency, commercial medical products on a former nonprofit medical site, and casino content on a former school site. The address carries history that the new owner did not earn

Suppose a respected local historical society ran a website for fifteen years.

Libraries linked to it. Teachers cited it. Bloggers bookmarked it. Search engines learned that the domain was associated with real historical material.

Then the organization dissolves and forgets to renew the name.

A promotional operator purchases it and replaces the archive with gambling pages, affiliate reviews, or lead-generation material.

Technically, the registration may be legitimate.

Socially, the address is wearing somebody else’s old uniform.

One expired domain can become part of a network

The practice becomes industrial when operators acquire many such domains.

The useful assets are not merely the names. They are the accumulated links and residual recognition attached to them.

A network can then publish promotional material across addresses that previously belonged to unrelated real projects.

Readers lose more than an old website.

Old links stop describing what they once described. Citations become misleading. Bookmarks turn into sales funnels. The historical meaning of the domain gets overwritten by whatever business model bought the registration next.

Ownership continuity is not purpose continuity

This is why an old-looking domain should not be treated as proof of an old organization.

Check current ownership signals, page history, subject continuity, archived versions, and whether the site’s present purpose resembles the one that earned its links.

Spam Empires do not always build reputation from scratch.

Sometimes they wait for reputation to expire and buy it by the year.

Search-result pages indexed as if they were substantive answers

A search result that leads to another search result is the web equivalent of being transferred to another department.

Sometimes that second page is useful.

Sometimes it exists mainly because the query itself generated an indexable URL.

Many websites expose internal search pages at addresses such as example.com/search?q=old+radios. If outside search engines crawl and index those pages, somebody searching the open web may land on a page whose main contribution is another list of results for the same words.

The user searched once and received instructions to keep searching.

Collections can be useful

There is nothing inherently thin about a page containing links to other pages.

A carefully maintained topic index, product category, bibliography, archive page, or curated collection can save readers enormous time. The page adds structure, selection, summaries, filters, or context that the individual items do not provide by themselves.

An automatically generated search-results page can also be useful inside a site.

The problem is whether it deserves to function as a standalone answer for people arriving from outside.

If the page merely repeats the query, displays a few weak matches, and offers no stable editorial value, indexing it can create thousands or millions of low-substance destinations as users try different searches.

Every query can become a page

That is the scaling problem.

A site’s internal search may accept nearly unlimited combinations of words, filters, sort orders, dates, and parameters. If those combinations become crawlable URLs, the theoretical page count can explode without the publisher creating any new underlying information.

Google gives site owners explicit controls for preventing pages from appearing in search results. Its current documentation explains that a noindex rule tells Google to drop a page from its index while leaving the page usable to visitors. See Google’s documentation on noindex.

That does not mean every internal search page should be hidden.

It means publishers can make a deliberate decision about whether those pages contribute enough value to be external destinations.

Search should terminate somewhere

For Dead Internet Theory, indexed internal searches are another way apparent web volume can exceed substantive information volume.

Ten thousand URLs may represent ten thousand documents.

They may also represent ten thousand ways of asking the same database what it already contains.

The useful test is simple:

When a person arrives from search, does the page answer, organize, or explain something?

Or did the internet just hand them another search box?

Mass-produced comparison pages shaped by affiliate payouts

A comparison page can look like journalism while behaving like a sales funnel.

That does not mean affiliate links automatically make the advice dishonest.

Affiliate publishing is a straightforward business model: a site recommends or links to products and receives a commission if a reader buys through that link. The problem begins when the payment structure is hidden, when the comparison pretends to be independent despite commercial influence, or when pages are produced at such scale that genuine evaluation becomes doubtful.

The Federal Trade Commission’s Endorsement Guides say material connections between endorsers and marketers should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Its guidance for affiliate marketers specifically says readers should be told when purchases through links generate commissions. See The FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

Commission does not prove corruption

A reviewer can earn affiliate revenue and still dislike products, explain weaknesses, test alternatives, and recommend the cheapest option.

The money is a conflict to disclose, not automatic evidence that every conclusion is false.

The stronger question is how the comparison was produced.

Did the publisher actually use the products? Are measurements shown? Are test methods described? Are products included even when no affiliate program exists? Are important alternatives omitted because they do not pay? Does every article somehow discover that the best option is also conveniently commissionable?

The FTC warns that supposedly independent comparison sites can become deceptive when rankings or favorable treatment are secretly sold. Scale makes thin judgment cheap

A genuine comparison takes work.

Someone has to understand the category, select meaningful criteria, gather data, test claims, and explain tradeoffs.

A mass-production system can instead generate thousands of pages around phrases like best office chair, best router, best camping stove, or X versus Y, then attach affiliate links to whatever products are available.

The page may contain plenty of words while containing very little evidence.

That distinction matters for Dead Internet Theory because search results can appear full of independent product advice while much of the apparent diversity is driven by the same commercial incentive.

Ten comparison pages do not necessarily represent ten independent evaluations.

Sometimes they represent ten entrances to the same checkout line.

Coupon pages targeting stores without useful verified offers

Few search phrases communicate intent as efficiently as store name + coupon.

The shopper is already interested in buying something and is looking for a reason to click before checkout.

That makes coupon searches valuable territory.

A publisher can create pages for thousands of retailers even when it has little useful information about most of them. The page title promises a discount. The body may contain generic store descriptions, expired codes, ordinary sale links presented like coupons, or buttons that require several clicks before revealing that no verified offer exists.

The page still captured the search visit.

A coupon page is useful when the coupon is useful

Google addressed this exact category when explaining its site reputation abuse policy. Its March 2024 guidance said coupon sections are not inherently a problem. A publication that is actively involved and provides unique value by directly sourcing coupons from merchants can legitimately serve its readers. Google contrasted that with white-label coupon services focused mainly on redistributing offers to exploit a host site’s search reputation. See Google’s explanation of its spam-policy changes.

That gives us a good practical standard.

A useful coupon page should tell the shopper something real:

  • what the offer actually provides,
  • whether a code is required,
  • what restrictions apply,
  • when it expires if known,
  • where the offer came from,
  • and ideally whether somebody has verified that it still works.

Without those things, coupon becomes mostly a keyword.

Search demand can manufacture fake abundance

The deeper Spam Empires problem is scale.

A template can generate a page for nearly every retailer on the internet. The operator does not need an actual relationship with those stores. It only needs a list of brand names and enough generic text to produce indexable URLs.

Search results can then look full of competing discount resources while several pages provide no discount at all.

The user spends attention testing buttons, closing popups, copying dead codes, or being redirected through affiliate links.

The economic transaction already happened from the publisher’s perspective: the visit was captured.

There is nothing wrong with helping shoppers save money.

There is something hollow about manufacturing the appearance of a deal simply because people reliably search for one.

A coupon page should contain a coupon-shaped fact.

Otherwise it is just a billboard wearing scissors around the edges.

Programmatic city-and-service pages without local substance

A business can serve fifty cities without writing fifty essays by hand.

That is not automatically a problem.

The problem is when the fifty pages contain essentially the same claims, photographs, testimonials, service descriptions, and calls to action with only the city name swapped by software.

A page for roof repair in Springfield becomes one for roof repair in Columbia, then roof repair in Kirksville, then several thousand more combinations generated from a database.

Google’s current spam policies distinguish ordinary automation from abuse. Its scaled content abuse policy targets pages produced at scale primarily to manipulate search rankings rather than help users, while its doorway abuse policy covers substantially similar pages created to rank for nearby queries and funnel users toward the same destination. Programmatic does not mean useless

Automation can produce excellent pages.

A national service might publish one page per location with actual hours, staff, local inventory, service boundaries, licensing information, photographs of that branch, local pricing, directions, appointment availability, and region-specific advice.

The structure may be generated from a template.

The information is still meaningfully local.

That is very different from a page claiming deep expertise in a town the company has never visited and may not even directly serve.

Geography becomes a keyword multiplier

Local searches are attractive because they often indicate commercial intent.

Someone searching for a plumber, roofer, lawyer, dentist, storage unit, or repair shop in a named city is much closer to spending money than somebody casually reading about plumbing.

That creates an incentive to manufacture coverage.

A company that genuinely has three locations can make itself look as though it has 3,000 local presences by generating pages for every city, suburb, ZIP code, and service variation it can name.

The web suddenly appears to contain thousands of local answers.

It may contain one sales funnel wearing thousands of town names.

Local substance is the useful test

A reader should be able to ask what would be lost if the city name were replaced with another one.

If the answer is almost nothing, the page is not doing much local work.

Useful programmatic publishing compresses repeated structure while preserving distinct information.

Search spam does the opposite.

It multiplies repeated information while pretending the structure itself is distinct.

Spam Empires learned that geography is not merely a place.

In a search box, it is also an almost infinite source of new pages.

Scraped-content networks built to capture search referrals

Copying one article is plagiarism.

Copying ten thousand articles with software starts to look like infrastructure.

A scraped-content network collects material from other sites, republishes it across new pages, and tries to turn somebody else’s work into search traffic. The copied text may be reproduced exactly, rearranged, lightly rewritten, translated, or mixed with automated summaries and advertising.

The operator’s contribution can be tiny compared with the amount of material published.

Google’s current spam policies describe scaled content abuse as generating large numbers of pages primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help users. Its examples include scraping feeds or search results and using automated transformations to create many pages with little added value. See Google’s spam policies.

Every copy becomes another destination

Imagine an original technical guide that took a weekend to research and test.

A scraper can copy it in seconds.

Now the search engine may encounter the original plus five, fifty, or five hundred derivative pages. The network gains additional opportunities to rank for phrases from the article, show ads, collect affiliate clicks, or redirect visitors elsewhere.

From the reader’s perspective, the search results may look diverse while several entries ultimately derive from the same source.

That is a Dead Internet Theory problem in miniature: many pages do not necessarily mean many independent acts of knowledge creation.

Attribution does not erase the extraction problem

Some scraped sites remove the original author’s name entirely.

Others leave a source link at the bottom and consider the matter settled.

Attribution is better than pretending the copied work appeared from nowhere, but it does not automatically make mass republication useful. A duplicate page can still compete with the original for attention, advertising revenue, and links.

The important question is what the new page contributes.

A legitimate archive, quotation, translation, commentary, or aggregation service can add real value. A page that merely duplicates material so it can intercept search referrals is different.

Search spam becomes industrial when copying is cheaper than creating and distribution is cheaper than judgment.

The network does not need to know the subject.

It only needs to know which words already attract people.

Hacked websites repurposed for search spam

A reputable domain does not guarantee that every page on it was published by the reputable owner.

Sometimes the page is there because somebody broke in.

Google’s current spam policies define hacked content as material placed on a site without permission because of a security vulnerability. The examples include code injection, injected pages, and other content added by attackers. See Google’s spam policies.

For search spam, the attraction is obvious.

A freshly registered junk domain may have no history, no links, and no reason for a search engine to trust it. A compromised university, small-business, nonprofit, government, or hobby site already has an established address and may have years of legitimate links pointing toward it.

An attacker can try to borrow that history.

The site owner may never have seen the page

Search-spam injections can be surprisingly separate from the visible website.

An attacker may create pages at obscure URLs, modify templates only for search crawlers, or insert links and redirects that ordinary visitors rarely encounter. The site’s homepage may continue looking normal while search results begin surfacing unrelated pharmaceuticals, gambling pages, fake stores, or other promotional material.

That distinction matters when evaluating responsibility.

The existence of a spam page under example.edu does not prove the university approved it. The domain tells you where the page is hosted, not who authorized the content.

Reputation becomes collateral

The legitimate owner pays several bills at once.

Visitors may encounter scams or malware. Search engines may reduce trust in affected pages. Administrators have to identify the compromise, remove injected material, patch the underlying weakness, request re-crawling, and sometimes repair years of reputational damage.

Meanwhile the spam operator can move on.

The attacker wanted the domain precisely because somebody else had already done the hard work of making it look legitimate.

This is one of the darker forms of industrialized search abuse because the infrastructure is stolen rather than merely purchased.

The Spam Empires lesson is simple:

a respected address can be borrowed without permission.

Trust the domain enough to investigate it.

Do not trust it enough to skip the investigation.

Parasite SEO and rented visibility on established domains

A page can inherit credibility from an address before a reader has evaluated a single sentence.

That is the attraction behind what is often called parasite SEO.

The tactic places third-party material on an established website so the new material can benefit from the host domain’s existing visibility, links, audience recognition, or ranking signals. The content may concern a subject that has little connection to the site’s ordinary editorial purpose.

Google now calls the abusive version site reputation abuse. Its policy defines the practice as publishing third-party pages on a site in an attempt to take advantage of the host site’s ranking signals. In November 2024, Google clarified that first-party involvement, licensing, white-label arrangements, or partial ownership do not automatically make the practice legitimate if the central purpose is still to exploit the host’s reputation. Google adjusted enforcement details in the European Economic Area in August 2026, but the underlying definition of the abuse remains centered on third-party material using a host site’s reputation to manipulate ranking. See Google’s 2026 policy update.

Third-party publishing is not automatically parasite SEO

A newspaper can publish a syndicated column.

A technical site can host a contractor’s tutorial. A magazine can run sponsored content. A university can publish material written by outside researchers.

Those relationships are normal parts of publishing.

The useful question is not simply who wrote the page?

It is why is this page on this domain?

If the host site’s editorial audience, subject matter, and oversight genuinely explain the publication, the relationship may make perfect sense. If a highly trusted domain suddenly contains hundreds of unrelated pages about casino bonuses, coupon codes, loans, or product comparisons produced by an outside operator, the domain itself may be the main thing being rented.

Readers usually see the hostname, not the contract

That is what makes the tactic useful.

A reader arriving from search sees a familiar domain name. They may reasonably assume the page carries the same editorial relationship, expertise, or standards as the rest of the site.

The commercial arrangement behind the page may be invisible.

That makes rented reputation different from ordinary advertising. The valuable asset is not merely banner space or referral traffic. It is the search credibility already accumulated by somebody else.

Spam Empires industrialized more than message delivery.

They also industrialized the borrowing of trust.

Sometimes the rented property is not an email list or botnet.

Sometimes it is the good name printed in the address bar.

Doorway pages that target thousands of near-identical searches

Search spam does not always shout.

Sometimes it calmly produces 4,000 pages.

One for emergency plumber in Springfield.

Another for 24-hour plumber Springfield.

Then Springfield North, Springfield South, Springfield suburbs, every neighboring town, every service variation, and every combination the publisher thinks somebody might type.

If the pages contain genuinely distinct local information, that can be useful publishing.

If they exist mainly to capture slightly different queries and funnel everybody toward the same destination, Google calls the pattern doorway abuse.

Google’s current spam policies define doorway abuse as sites or pages created to rank for specific, similar queries while leading users toward intermediate pages that are less useful than the final destination. Its examples include large sets of regional or city pages that funnel visitors to one page and substantially similar pages that behave more like search results than a coherent browsable site.

Quantity can impersonate coverage

A large doorway network can make a company appear to have extraordinary specificity.

Search for one town and there is a page.

Search the next town and there is another.

Search a slightly different service and another page appears.

To the searcher, this can look like hundreds of locally relevant answers.

Underneath, the pages may differ by little more than city names, keyword substitutions, headings, or automatically inserted statistics.

The apparent diversity exists at the URL level rather than the information level.

That distinction matters for Dead Internet Theory because page counts can dramatically overstate how much independently useful material exists.

Ten thousand URLs are not necessarily ten thousand answers.

Programmatic publishing is not automatically doorway abuse

Automation itself is not the problem.

A weather service can generate thousands of city pages because each page contains different forecasts. A public database can expose one page per county because the records actually differ. An auto-parts site may need pages for thousands of vehicle combinations because fitment information changes.

The important question is whether each page earns its existence for the reader.

Does it provide distinct information appropriate to the query?

Or is the query variation merely bait before every route converges on the same sales funnel?

Google’s doorway policy targets the second pattern, not the fact that a site has many pages.

That is a useful distinction for Spam Empires.

Industrial web garbage often wins by making duplication look like abundance.

The factory does not need to create a thousand useful answers.

It only needs to manufacture a thousand doors.

Unsolicited sales pitches through professional networking inboxes

A professional profile is a sales prospecting database that wrote itself.

Job title. Employer. Industry. Location. Skills. Seniority. Recent posts. Sometimes even the problem a person is currently trying to solve.

That makes professional networks unusually attractive for legitimate introductions and mass outreach alike.

LinkedIn’s current Professional Community Policies draw the line in useful terms. The platform prohibits untargeted, irrelevant, obviously unwanted, unauthorized, inappropriate commercial or promotional messages, as well as gratuitously repetitive messaging. LinkedIn also provides tools to report unwanted messages and invitations as spam.

The policy does not say every sales message from a stranger is forbidden.

That distinction matters.

Business networking includes talking to people you do not know

A recruiter contacting a qualified candidate is not strange behavior on LinkedIn.

Neither is a vendor introducing a service to a company that plausibly needs it, a consultant reaching out after reading someone’s post, or two professionals connecting because they work in the same obscure field.

Cold contact is part of professional networking.

The problem appears when the targeting becomes ceremonial.

“Hi Leo, I noticed your impressive work in [AUTO-INSERT JOB TITLE]. We help visionary leaders just like you achieve 700% growth. Do you have 15 minutes Tuesday?”

The profile was technically read by software.

The person was not meaningfully understood.

Scale changes the social contract

A relevant one-to-one introduction has a high cost to the sender. They have to decide why this particular person makes sense.

Automation reduces that cost dramatically.

Profiles can be filtered, templated, enriched, sequenced, and contacted in batches. The sender can tolerate a tiny response rate because each additional attempt is cheap.

The recipient experiences the opposite economics.

Every message has to be inspected long enough to determine whether it is a real opportunity, a recruiter, a customer, an industry peer, or pitch number fourteen for outsourced lead generation.

LinkedIn now sorts invitations using confidence signals and offers reporting and spam folders for unwanted messaging. Those controls are evidence of the filtering burden created when professional accessibility becomes a distribution channel.

Spam Empires do not require a message to be fraudulent.

Sometimes the industrialization is simply this:

A place built for professional introductions becomes so efficient at introductions that strangers can perform them by the thousand.
