Some websites answer a question with a paragraph. Stone Age Skills answered one by rubbing dozens of species of wood together hundreds of times.

The page documents an experiment with the hand-drill method of friction fire. The author gathered spindle material from 52 native and 22 non-native species of trees, shrubs, forbs and lianas, plus one grass, and tested them against four kinds of hearthboard material.

That produced 370 possible wood combinations.

Each attempt was rated by how difficult it was to produce an ember. The author also measured relative wood density, compared green, dead and nascent growth, tested different hearthboard densities, and tried producing embers without cutting the usual notch into the socket.

No metal tools were used in the trials.

A personal webpage behaving like a field study

The useful part is not simply the conclusion that some woods work better than others.

The page preserves the messy process behind the conclusion.

Fifteen spindle woods emerged as especially effective, including yarrow, horseweed, box elder, California buckeye, mule fat, redwood, cattail, mugwort and Douglas fir. The author then compared those results against measured density and found that lighter spindle woods generally performed better in the tests.

Eric Isaacson’s A86 assembler and D86 debugger belong to the DOS programming world, but the website still preserves the full ecosystem around them: downloads, documentation, feature lists, source libraries, pricing, licensing, Win32 examples, and the 32-bit A386 and D386 versions.

Version 4.05 of A86 can generate DOS .COM files directly, create .OBJ files for a linker, or produce raw object output suitable for ROMs. D86 is a screen-oriented debugger that freezes a program’s state so registers, flags and memory can be inspected while execution is stepped instruction by instruction.

The 32-bit A386 material stretches across the x86 family from the original 8088 through Intel’s Pentium III and AMD’s Athlon, including MMX, SIMD and 3DNow instructions.

The commercial shareware web never completely vanished

The page is fascinating because it still behaves like a software storefront from another computing era.

There is a combined A86/D86 ZIP download. Registered users can buy a library containing more than 200 procedures and macros plus source for roughly 200 short programs. A Win32 package includes a complete HELLO32 example for building programs that run under Windows NT, Windows 95 and later systems.

The language of the page is wonderfully direct. Isaacson calls A86 the finest assembler available and then immediately tells you exactly what it outputs, what processors it understands, and what the debugger does.

The site is built around the things that made drive-ins different from indoor cinemas: theater lists, Route 66 locations, concession stands, intermission material, old movie advertisements, novelty clips, and the practical question of which surviving theaters are still operating.

The homepage describes the project as being dedicated both to people who remember the nostalgic feeling of attending drive-ins and to the owners who continue running them.

That matters because drive-in history is intensely local.

A chain multiplex can be documented through corporate records and release schedules. A drive-in might be remembered through a town name, a screen beside a highway, an old newspaper ad, a concession menu, or somebody recalling exactly where the entrance used to be.

A database built out of memories

The site’s theater lists are useful because they preserve geography alongside nostalgia.

There are also pages devoted to the culture around the movie itself. Old advertisements and concession material capture the strange ecosystem of snack-bar countdowns, intermission cartoons, car speakers and promotional films that made a night at the drive-in its own format.

Ancient Web: Sprott’s Gateway Turns Chaos Physics Into a Public Laboratory

Clint Sprott’s web server looks like a physics department accidentally left a laboratory door open onto the Internet.

Sprott is an emeritus professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison whose work spans experimental plasma physics and nonlinear dynamics. His site takes those subjects and mixes them with software, fractal art, technical notes, photographs, MIDI files, amateur radio, books, seminars and whatever else belonged on his server.

The center of gravity is chaos.

Sprott’s 1993 book Strange Attractors: Creating Patterns in Chaos described methods for automatically searching mathematical systems for chaotic solutions and turning them into images. The accompanying software could generate large numbers of patterns, and the website grew into a public gallery of the results.

One page still produces a new “Fractal of the Day” automatically. The archive includes Lorenz attractors, Julia sets, Mandelbrot images, symmetric icons, animated GIFs, three-dimensional attractors and natural fractals found in bark, ice, moss, broccoli and pavement.

The software shelf is still there

The software section is pure archaeology.

There are DOS executables for chaos demonstrations, strange-attractor searches, Julia sets, neural-network attractors and IFS fractals. Some use VESA graphics modes such as 800×600 or 1024×768. The page still explains how to download files with Netscape by holding Shift while clicking.

It also notes that many of the old programs can still be run under DOSBox.

That is the kind of continuity old technical sites provide unusually well. A paper explains the mathematics. A ZIP file contains the program. A gallery shows the output. Another page preserves the source code. The pieces remain connected because one person kept them connected.

Ancient Web: Encyclopaedia Romana Has Been Wandering Through Rome Since 1997

Encyclopaedia Romana is what happens when a reference work refuses to stay in its lane.

James Grout first posted the site on April 17, 1997. Nearly three decades later, he is still revising it. The homepage carries a 1997–2026 copyright notice, and the project was updated again in 2026.

Calling it an encyclopedia is accurate, but it undersells the structure.

Grout describes the site as a collection of incidental essays on Roman history and culture. The important word is incidental.

A page about one subject leads into another, then another. Roman Britain wanders into the Norman period. Essays branch into Greek architecture, courtesans, paganism, the Viking Age and Byzantium. Grout’s own preface mentions Cleopatra’s pearls, red mullets, lead poisoning, tulip mania, Nero as the Antichrist, Caesar’s giraffe and conchylomania.

He also notes, with some pride, that there is basically nothing on Roman politics or economics.

Hyperlinks as a research method

The site works because the digressions are not treated as mistakes.

A modern content system would probably split every subject into a keyword-targeted article, add a recommendation widget, and attempt to predict the reader’s next click.

Encyclopaedia Romana just links the thought that naturally follows.

That makes browsing feel closer to following footnotes through a physical library. You may arrive looking for an aqueduct and leave knowing why Romans cared about purple dye, poisonous plants or an obscure statue type.

Even the interface has become part of the experience. Grout jokes that a frame-based design might have been more elegant, but scrolling through the essays has the pleasing anachronism of scrolling like the ancients.

That sentence could almost serve as a manifesto for the surviving personal web.

The Pipe was a smoking pipe built around synthetic materials rather than the traditional briar bowl.

Its most distinctive versions used a molded exterior with a pyrolytic-graphite bowl liner, a material combination that fit perfectly into the period’s enthusiasm for aerospace technology, plastics, and futuristic consumer design.

ThePipe.info is collector Billie W. Taylor II’s attempt to document the entire strange family.

A product history told through surviving objects

The site catalogs shapes, colors, finishes, packaging, advertisements, patents, brochures, manufacturing details, and related models including The Smoke and Venturi.

That makes it useful even if you have no interest in using the objects for their original purpose.

Collectors trying to identify an unlabeled pipe can compare body shapes and colors. Design historians can trace how “space-age” materials were marketed to consumers. Patent researchers can follow the technical claims behind the graphite liner. Packaging and advertisements show how aggressively futuristic materials were sold during the 1960s and 1970s.

Later collector research indicates that colored and striped finishes appeared during the late 1960s, The Smoke line followed around 1970, and Venturi models appeared in the early 1970s before the family disappeared from production later in the decade.

Underground geology needs pictures

The project began in 2001 as a smaller spin-off of vMac. What started as a simplified programming example eventually became the continuation of the older emulator as vMac itself stopped being actively developed.

The standard build emulates a Macintosh Plus, while other variations cover systems including the Macintosh 128K, 512K, 512Ke, SE, Classic, SE FDHD, and Macintosh II work.

Preservation needs the surrounding environment

The Gryphel site is useful because the emulator is only one layer.

There are build instructions, source code, hardware documentation, interface notes, old branches, localization material, disk-image tools, and a variation service that generates customized builds.

The software archive is equally interesting.
