This is a compact research bundle around Don Hopkins’ Unix ports of SimCity and the later GPL Micropolis release.
The early material documents a genuinely odd branch of game history: SimCity running on Unix workstations, a multiplayer X11 version using Tcl/Tk, the earlier HyperLook/NeWS interface, shared network play, pie menus and the development path that eventually led to the open-source Micropolis release.
What you get: ten verified links. Three point directly to downloadable Micropolis packages/source archives. The remaining links are primary historical material maintained by Don Hopkins: the old SimCity index, multiplayer product announcement, SimCityNet proposal, manual, keynote transcript, and X11/HyperLook demonstration transcripts.
The current Micropolis downloads are released under the GPL with additional terms. No SimCity or Electronic Arts trademark rights are included, and CacheRat claims no affiliation with Don Hopkins, Electronic Arts, Maxis or the original commercial Unix product.
This is a location-and-research product. The underlying pages and open-source files are publicly available; the product saves you the archaeological work of finding the surviving pieces and separating the historical X11 material from the later source release.
