Teechan supports bidirectional payments within a channel, requires one message per payment, and places at most two transactions on the blockchain under the described execution model. The authors built the framework with Intel SGX and tested it on the Bitcoin network.

The paper comes from the same scaling problem that produced the Lightning conversation: Bitcoin’s base layer cannot provide unlimited throughput and instant settlement. Teechan takes a different trust route. The reported implementation reached 2,480 transactions per second on one channel with sub-millisecond processing latency, excluding network latency.
