Everybody knows this photograph.
Most copies online look like somebody faxed 1903 through 2007.
This is the Wright brothers’ first powered, controlled, sustained flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. Orville Wright is aboard the Flyer. Wilbur is running alongside. The Library of Congress catalog describes the flight captured here as 120 feet in 12 seconds at 10:35 a.m.
I took the surviving black-and-white image and produced a cleaned, enlarged color edition. Damage and heavy photographic artifacts were reduced, the scene was clarified, and restrained color was added to separate the aircraft from the sand and sky.
No fake sunset. No steampunk nonsense. It was already the first airplane flight. The photograph doesn’t need help being interesting.
