This is an old internet relic from the early viral-web era.
Long before everything became feeds, algorithms, and short-form video, weird little pages like this got passed around through email, forums, personal sites, and whatever directory somebody happened to find them in.
The file itself is simple. The context is the interesting part.

If you were online around 2001, there’s a decent chance somebody sent you this.
The Insanity Test was one of those early viral internet jokes that spread before YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, or really any centralized place for internet culture to live.
The page was almost stupidly simple.
A picture of a Ferrari Formula One car. Instructions telling you to stare at it without laughing. Then a guy making increasingly ridiculous engine noises with his mouth.
That’s it.
And it spread everywhere.
This was the era of forwarded emails, personal websites, Flash pages, forums, file-sharing networks, funny-page directories, IRC links, and somebody at work yelling across the room that you needed to come look at something.
There wasn’t a Like button.
There wasn’t an algorithm deciding whether it deserved distribution.
People just sent the link to each other.
The sound itself goes back even further. In 1997, Swedish teenager Daniel Malmedahl recorded himself imitating a two-stroke engine. The recording circulated online under the filename 2TAKTARE.MP3.
By 2001 it had been paired with a still image of a Ferrari Formula One car in versions commonly known as Deng Deng and later The Insanity Test.
A couple of years later, animator Erik Wernquist encountered the same sound and built a 3D character around it called The Annoying Thing.
That character eventually became Crazy Frog.
So if the noise sounds strangely familiar, there’s a reason.
This is one of the little pieces of pre-social-media web culture that existed before the commercial version became vastly more famous than the thing it came from.
The original page is still preserved in a web archive.
